Book Target Alignment in the National Ignition Facility

Download or read book Target Alignment in the National Ignition Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate placement of hundreds of focused laser beams on target is necessary to achieve success in the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The current system requirement is [le]7 [mu]rad error in output pointing and [le]1 mm error in focusing. To accommodate several system shots per day, a target alignment system must be able to align the target to chamber center, inject an alignment beam to represent each shot beam, and point and focus the alignment beams onto the target in about one hour. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we have developed a target alignment concept and built a prototype to validate the approach. The concept comprises three systems: the chamber center reference, target alignment sensor, and target alignment beams.

Book The Fairy Tale of Nuclear Fusion

Download or read book The Fairy Tale of Nuclear Fusion written by L. J. Reinders and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully researched book presents facts and arguments showing, beyond a doubt, that nuclear fusion power will not be technically feasible in time to satisfy the world's urgent need for climate-neutral energy. The author describes the 70-year history of nuclear fusion; the vain attempts to construct an energy-generating nuclear fusion power reactor, and shows that even in the most optimistic scenario nuclear fusion, in spite of the claims of its proponents, will not be able to make a sizable contribution to the energy mix in this century, whatever the outcome of ITER. This implies that fusion power will not be a factor in combating climate change, and that the race to save the climate with carbon-free energy will have been won or lost long before the first nuclear fusion power station comes on line. Aimed at the general public as well as those whose decisions directly affect energy policy, this book will be a valuable resource for informing future debates.

Book Bayesian Signal Processing

Download or read book Bayesian Signal Processing written by James V. Candy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the Bayesian approach to statistical signal processing for a variety of useful model sets This book aims to give readers a unified Bayesian treatment starting from the basics (Baye’s rule) to the more advanced (Monte Carlo sampling), evolving to the next-generation model-based techniques (sequential Monte Carlo sampling). This next edition incorporates a new chapter on “Sequential Bayesian Detection,” a new section on “Ensemble Kalman Filters” as well as an expansion of Case Studies that detail Bayesian solutions for a variety of applications. These studies illustrate Bayesian approaches to real-world problems incorporating detailed particle filter designs, adaptive particle filters and sequential Bayesian detectors. In addition to these major developments a variety of sections are expanded to “fill-in-the gaps” of the first edition. Here metrics for particle filter (PF) designs with emphasis on classical “sanity testing” lead to ensemble techniques as a basic requirement for performance analysis. The expansion of information theory metrics and their application to PF designs is fully developed and applied. These expansions of the book have been updated to provide a more cohesive discussion of Bayesian processing with examples and applications enabling the comprehension of alternative approaches to solving estimation/detection problems. The second edition of Bayesian Signal Processing features: “Classical” Kalman filtering for linear, linearized, and nonlinear systems; “modern” unscented and ensemble Kalman filters: and the “next-generation” Bayesian particle filters Sequential Bayesian detection techniques incorporating model-based schemes for a variety of real-world problems Practical Bayesian processor designs including comprehensive methods of performance analysis ranging from simple sanity testing and ensemble techniques to sophisticated information metrics New case studies on adaptive particle filtering and sequential Bayesian detection are covered detailing more Bayesian approaches to applied problem solving MATLAB® notes at the end of each chapter help readers solve complex problems using readily available software commands and point out other software packages available Problem sets included to test readers’ knowledge and help them put their new skills into practice Bayesian Signal Processing, Second Edition is written for all students, scientists, and engineers who investigate and apply signal processing to their everyday problems.

Book Design and Optimization of Production Lines

Download or read book Design and Optimization of Production Lines written by Paolo Renna and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the latest findings on the design and optimization of production lines. The “Fourth Industrial Revolution” (alternatively known as “Industry 4.0”) supports innovative models for energy consumption and fault tolerance in automated lines, and this drives changes in the design and optimization models of production lines. The goal is to collect a series of works that can summarize the latest trends in the field of production line optimization models in order to improve the responsiveness of automated lines to failures, reduce energy consumption and peak electricity demand, and develop other methods to support robust and sustainable production lines.

Book An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy

Download or read book An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-08-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential for using fusion energy to produce commercial electric power was first explored in the 1950s. Harnessing fusion energy offers the prospect of a nearly carbon-free energy source with a virtually unlimited supply of fuel. Unlike nuclear fission plants, appropriately designed fusion power plants would not produce the large amounts of high-level nuclear waste that requires long-term disposal. Due to these prospects, many nations have initiated research and development (R&D) programs aimed at developing fusion as an energy source. Two R&D approaches are being explored: magnetic fusion energy (MFE) and inertial fusion energy (IFE). An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy describes and assesses the current status of IFE research in the United States; compares the various technical approaches to IFE; and identifies the scientific and engineering challenges associated with developing inertial confinement fusion (ICF) in particular as an energy source. It also provides guidance on an R&D roadmap at the conceptual level for a national program focusing on the design and construction of an inertial fusion energy demonstration plant.

Book Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene

Download or read book Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene written by Martin B. Stern and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the only textbook available today that covers all of the critical elements of industrial hygiene ó conceptual information, computational coverage, case studies, and sample problems and exercises ó in one volume. Organized around the basic rubrics of industrial hygiene, this book helps students to think like industrial hygienists while offering the latest techniques for practicing professionals. Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene is the most complete reference available on IH, and is also an ideal study aid for exam preparation. This is the first and only textbook that includes all critical computations for each concept covered. Each chapter discusses a different hazard and how to recognize, evaluate, and control it. The advantage of this approach is clear; technical issues, instrumental techniques, engineering control procedures ó relevant issues from A to Z ó are discussed for each hazard. Chapters conclude with case studies that offer critical insight into the practical aspects of the field. The book also covers emerging issues that will affect industrial hygienists in the future. The book includes real-life situations and experiences to demonstrate practical applications of concepts presented in the text. For students, Applications and Computational Elements of Industrial Hygiene offers critical material formerly scattered across multiple sources. For seasoned industrial hygienists, this is an essential problem-solving tool and state-of-the-art reference that consolidates and updates previously scattered information.
