Book excerpt: Although most Catholic priests are devout men who have sincerely committed their lives to Christ and His Church, they are also human beings with faults and failings. Some are cranky and stern, and others can be weak or indifferent. Some grapple with alcohol or sensuality, and others are controlled by money. In our day, thousands of priests have been exposed for committing the gravest of sins: abusing those who have been entrusted to their care. In these searingly honest and insightful pages, EWTN host and author Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J., brings consolation to all those who have been abused, wounded, or scandalized by the wickedness of priests and bishops. He takes you on a reassuring exploration of the Gospels to show how Christ anticipated the sins of the clergy and the hierarchy—and gives us examples of how to deal with them spiritually emotionally, rationally, and practically. Fr. Mitch reinforces what Christ’s parables teach us: that good and evil will co-exist in the Church, and that spiritual blindness will affect the moral life of the clergy and the lay faithful alike. The solution, he says, lies in the power of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection and the Apostles’ response to the Risen Lord: authentic conversion to faith in Jesus, which reorients our lives toward selfless service of others.

Book excerpt: Western Christians in the late Middle Ages were accustomed to living in a hierarchical Church - albeit one that had huge local differences and many divisions. Half a millennium later, that seeming unity has been shattered into tens of thousands of Christian denominations, each with its distinctive beliefs and structure. In The Wheat and the Tares, Andrew Chibi explores the era of the Reformation, showing how that unity was shattered in a few years. Chibi brings out the divisions that were simmering deep beneath the surface in the era before Luther posted his 95 theses attacking the sale of indulgences on the door of the Castle Church at Wittenberg, sparking momentous changes throughout Europe. The widespread recognition of the need for reform is seen through the eyes of Erasmus, the greatest scholar of the age. Exploring the writings of the main reformers about the Church, Chibi brings out the diverse ecclesiological ideas. Jesus's parable of the Wheat and the Tares for Zwingli and other reformers offered an image, as the reformers sought to rediscover the purity of the Church as God's gift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I write this book to express my love and commitment to the one and true God who can provide eternal life in its spiritual and purest form for me. Theres the potential of an afterlife concerning any human being who is given the possibilities. First, theres Gods promise, eternal life, and the other is his wrath, eternal damnation. Each single individual, married or not, will stand before a true living God alone for the judgment. The entire universe is now in the valley of decision. These writings partake the nature of man created by God in his image to take on his nature and character with a broken and contrite spirit. There must be a sincere repentance and a willingness in every heart.

Book Tares Among the Wheat Living Righteously in a Fallen World

Download or read book Tares Among the Wheat Living Righteously in a Fallen World written by Steven R. Cook and published by Steven R. Cook. This book was released on with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus explained the parable of the wheat and tares (Matt 13:36-44), describing a world that consists of believers and unbelievers who belong to two spiritual realms; the first to Christ and the second to Satan. We see a rise in attacks on Christians and churches, the abortion of tens of millions of babies, rising national debt, lack of authority orientation, the spread of Socialistic and Communistic ideologies, civil unrest, the undermining of the family, and other problems. As Christians, we are not neutral and stand in opposition to Satan’s world-system. In this book, Dr. Cook addresses the reality of our current situation, and provides practical biblical solutions that Christians may use to live righteously in a fallen world.

Book The Authenticity of the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares and Its Interpretation

Download or read book The Authenticity of the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares and Its Interpretation written by Ramesh Khatry and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis seeks to demonstrate the authenticity (as dominical teaching) of the parable of the darnel (Mt 13:24-30) and its interpretation (Mt 13:36-43). The interpretation in particular is almost universally regarded as non-dominical, notably by J Jeremias and his followers. My thesis argues that the whole of Mt 13:36-43 (and Mt 13:24-30) should be seen as dominical. The 'introduction' gives a brief survey of parabolic studies, and outlines the case against the authenticity of Mt 13:24-30,36-43. Chapter AI defends the authenticity of the parable (Mt 13:24-30). The following chapters do the same for the interpretation (Mt 13:36-43), looking at the 'Son of Man' and related teaching (chapter BI), the 'kingdom of God' (BII), 'righteousness' and 'lawlessness' (BIII), and other motifs (BIV), and finally the question of the coherence of the parable and its interpretation (BV). My approach has been negatively to demonstrate the weakness of the scholarly arguments against authenticity and positively to offer a case for authenticity via (a) a study of background, including special study of the rural Palestinian practices and of relevant Jewish theological ideas, and (b) a careful use of the criterion of multiple attestation which demonstrates that our material is linguistically and theologically coherent with other well-attested Jesus tradition. The originality of the work lies apart from anything else in the fact that a full length defence of the authenticity of Mt 13:24-30,36-43 has not been attempted before. But we have also brought to bear various insights, canvassed in other contexts, but not specifically in connexion with Mt 13:24-30,36-43, e.g. suggesting a background to the Son of Man tradition in Ezekiel and the Similitudes of Enoch, making use of the Old Testament concept of God as farmer, explaining the agricultural background to the parable and interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superstition, mysticism, and religion weave like tangled vines through the tales of Amelia’s newly discovered ancestry. As a widow struggling to sustain herself and her ten-year-old son, Amy’s modest life is tragically disrupted when a dubious lawyer determines her late mother, adopted at birth, was the estranged daughter of the recently deceased Lexington McClary. Although the net worth of the once enormous estate is petty, Amy decides to travel several hundred miles to attend the funeral, in the hope of at least learning a semblance of her newfound ancestry. After the interment, alone in the secluded rural cemetery, Amy trips and bashes her head against a tombstone, suffering a coma and complications requiring medical care and convalescence for several months. While precariously recovering, Amy is visited in the depth of nights by a mysterious woman who tells stories of Amy’s maternal grandparents, their families, and acquaintances. The tales of her ancestors reach back nearly a century and include their immigration from Ireland to New York City and their migration westward to Indian Territory. Poignant remembrances of her own life and the altered world into which she regains consciousness portray the unconquerable but elusive human spirit, confronting failure in the wake of triumph, tragedy dispelling romance, madness shaming war of its glory, and the cruelty of murder in defiance of reason.
