Book Wah To Yah and the Taos Trail

Download or read book Wah To Yah and the Taos Trail written by Lewis H. Garrard and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic account and history of the Taos Revolt and the Cheyenne Indians. In the bright morning of his youth, Lewis H. Garrard traveled into the wild and free Rocky Mountain West and left us this fresh and vigorous account, which, says A. B. Guthrie Jr., contains in its pages “the genuine article—the Indian, the trader, the mountain man, their dress, and behavior and speech and the country and climate they lived in.” On September 1, 1846, Garrard, then only seventeen years old, left Westport Landing (now Kansas City) with a caravan, under command of the famous trader Céran St. Vrain, bound for Bent’s Fort (Fort William) in the southeastern part of present-day Colorado. After a lengthy visit at the fort and in a camp of the Cheyenne Indians, early in 1847 he joined the little band of volunteers recruited by William Bent to avenge the death of his brother, Governor Charles Bent of Taos, killed in a bloody but brief Mexican and Indian uprising in that New Mexican pueblo. In fact, Garrard’s is the only eyewitness account we have of the trial and hanging of the “revolutionaries” at Taos. Many notable figures of the plains and mountains dot his pages: traders St. Vrain and the Bents; mountain men John L. Hatcher, Jim Beckwourth, Lucien B. Maxwell, Kit Carson, and others; various soldiery traveling to and from the outposts of the Mexican War; and explorer and writer George F. Ruxton. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people of Taos have always displayed a feisty--if not downright insurgent--spirit. Every uprising that toppled a New Mexican government started here, beginning with the Pueblo revolt against the Spanish colonists and including the assassinations of a Mexican-era tax governor, who lost his head, and the first American governor, who lost his scalp before his life. Living on the edge of the northern frontier of New Spain, Taosenos became accomplished smugglers of slaves, firearms and other black market goods. As a convenient terminus of the Old Sante Fe Trail, Taos drew loitering rabble-rousers who were overly fond of the dangerous hooch called Taos Lightning. In the twentieth century, a sleepy artists' colony became a haven for a new kind of revolutionary, who dreamed of overthrowing bourgeois values. Join author Ellen Dornan as she delves into the wicked history of Taos, New Mexico.

Download or read book Taos written by Lyn Bleiler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the "Land of Enchantment," Taos has a long history that predates the pilgrims' arrival at Plymouth Rock. Anasazi Indians first inhabited the Taos Valley in 1000 A.D., and the Taos Pueblo (both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark) has been continuously inhabited for more than 1,000 years. Spanish conquistadors explored Taos in 1540, and by 1615 many Spanish families had settled in the region. Taos later became a crossroads for French and American trappers, and by the early 1800s it was a bustling headquarters for mountain men, including the legendary Kit Carson. When artists Bert Phillips and Ernest Blumenschein passed through in 1898, a broken wagon wheel delayed them and ultimately resulted in another wave of newcomers, who established an art colony. In 1917, New York socialite Mabel Dodge became enthralled with Taos, and during the next four decades she invited many highly regarded creative people to visit, including Ansel Adams, Carl Jung, Georgia O'Keefe, Willa Cather, D. H. Lawrence, and Aldous Huxley. Taos continues to attract adventurous, spirited individuals.

Book excerpt: Surviving participants in the earlier Taos murders were arrested, tried in American-dominated courts, and, within weeks, hanged for their actions. The murder of Bent and the others at Taos and the subsequent trials and executions brought with them misunderstanding, controversy, mistrust, and recrimination on both sides of the issue. The events also subjected President James K. Polk?s administration to censure over what some critics believed was an overextension of presidential authority in claiming New Mexico as a territory. In Revolt at Taos: The New Mexican and Indian Insurrection of 1847, writer and historian James A. Crutchfield explores the fast-moving events surrounding the bloody revolt which left native inhabitants of New Mexico wondering how their neighbors and kinsmen could be legally tried, found guilty, and executed for acts they considered to have been honorable ones committed in defense of their country.

Book Taos Pueblo Winter

Download or read book Taos Pueblo Winter written by Taos Pueblo Tiwa Language Program and published by 7th Generation. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrations-only book tells the story of the Red Willow People of Taos Pueblo in present-day northern New Mexico. Taos Pueblo is known to be one of the longest continuously inhabited communities, designated both a UNESCO World heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark. This delightful board book is part of the Taos Pueblo Four Seasons series which was created by the Taos Pueblo’s Tiwa Language Program to preserve the Tiwa culture and revitalize the unwritten Tiwa language by teaching it to younger generations. Many other Indigenous languages also need to be revitalized, so it is the hope of the Taos Pueblo’s Tiwa Language Program that other American Indian nations will find the books useful to teach their languages to their children. Each season features a distinct and well-known Taos Pueblo artist. The beautiful, hand-drawn illustrations will also educate young children about the four seasons of the year and the plants and animals in the area. All proceeds of the book support the Taos Pueblo’s Tiwa Language Program.
