Book Spontaneous Venturing

Download or read book Spontaneous Venturing written by Dean A. Shepherd and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying a new approach to disaster response: spontaneous, compassionate, and impromptu actions to alleviate suffering. In Spontaneous Venturing, Dean Shepherd and Trenton Williams identify and describe a new approach for responding to disaster and suffering: the local organizing of spontaneous, compassionate, and impromptu actions—the rapid emergence of a compassionate venture. This approach, termed by the authors “spontaneous venturing,” can be more effective than the traditional “command-and-control” methods of large disaster relief organizations. It can customize and target resources and deliver them quickly, helping victims almost immediately. For example, during the catastrophic 2009 bushfires in Victoria, Australia—the focal disaster for the book—residents organized an impromptu relief center that collected and distributed urgently needed goods without red tape. Special bonds and friendships formed among the volunteers and victims; some were both volunteer and victim. Many victims were able to mobilize resources despite considerable personal losses. Shepherd and Williams describe the lasting impact of disaster and tell the stories of Victoria residents who organized in the aftermath of the bushfires. They consider the limitations of traditional disaster relief efforts and explain that when victims take action to help others, they develop behavioral, emotional, and assumptive resilience; venturing leads to social interaction, community connections, and other positive outcomes. Finally, they explore spontaneous venturing in a less-developed country, investigating the activities of Haitians after the devastating 2010 earthquake. The lesson for communities hit by disaster: find opportunities for compassionate action.

Anxious and concerned parents, conscientious or dismissive caregivers, arrogant or caring do-gooders, insensitive or dedicated professionals, all come together to form Tangled Webs through which the journey of a child with disabilities and her family are portrayed. This is the story of the dedication of the people who supported Sharon, who was born with Down Syndrome. She matures despite all headaches, problems, and doomsayers, to become independent from her family. It is a story of triumph in a world of adversity. Book Cross cultural Business Behavior

Download or read book Cross cultural Business Behavior written by Richard R. Gesteland and published by Copenhagen Business School Press DK. This book was released on 2012 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this new edition of Cross-Cultural Business Behavior is CHANGE. First of all, cultures change. In markets around the world, business behavior is constantly evolving, impelled by generational shifts, improvements in education, and (especially) increasing exposure to the world marketplace. That is why all of the book's 43 'Negotiator Profiles' have been thoroughly updated, with new cases and fresh examples added. In addition to the change in culture, international managers' challenges have changed too. For example, just a few years ago, participants at global management seminars around the world were mainly interested in how to communicate and negotiate with overseas partners. But, they now find that their toughest challenges are how to manage overseas subsidiaries, strategic alliances, and international partnerships. To reflect these new realities, the book's time-tested framework for understanding cross-cultural negotiating behavior has been expanded to include a wide variety of practical pointers on managing in today's global marketplace. This fifth edition is important for everyone involved with global management, whether student or manager, because cultures and business challenges do change. The book is an essential survival guide for doing business in cultures other than one's own.

Book The Political Party Matrix

Download or read book The Political Party Matrix written by J. P. Monroe and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2001-04-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Party Matrix focuses on the organizational life of the party as it emerges through the collaboration of elected officials. Monroe argues that, rather than experiencing an institutional or bureaucratic rebirth, the parties remain what they have always been: institutions through which elites coordinate their activities in the political process requiring neither an elaborate bureaucracy nor a formal organization. Monroe contends that the growth of political staff allows the incumbent to attract and retain a stable core of workers who can handle the tasks vital to the maintenance of the incumbent's personal political apparatus. Working together, these personal political apparatuses create intricate structures for electoral coordination. Using interviews and state and national data, Monroe provides evidence that office holders and their organizations coordinate their efforts to help other candidates in the electoral arena; they have a complex grooming and recruitment apparatus; and they cooperate in government to satisfy their supporters. The result is an elaborate party network based on the interaction and collaboration of these local units.
