Book excerpt: This book follows the series of publications on personal defense and budo in general that we have been doing for some time. After the unexpected success in several countries of our book "Goshin Jutsu - self-defense" we decided to put under a same structure a broad work on the Tambo Jutsu (Art of the small cane). The Tambo is used by many martial arts schools nowadays, generally in the context of preferably police use, although the Tambo Jutsu offers a wide range of movements and techniques, so its use as a method of civil defense is widespread. We give shape to the traditional Tambo Jutsu technique and adapt it to different attacks and common aggressions in any current personal defense situation, such as doll handles, body grips, strangulations, different fist attacks, kicks, knife attacks etc. A total of 48 techniques are distributed in three large groups. All the technical sequences are based on the principle of efficiency, economy of movements, carefully marking the displacements, turns and the reactions of the aggressor to the different blows or imbalances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the practice, history, and etiquette of budo, the study of Japanese martial arts for self-cultivation—written by an American martial arts master The study of budo, or the Japanese martial arts for self-cultivation, is a lifelong path toward perfection of character. Here, Dave Lowry, a sword master who has practiced and taught budo for over forty years, addresses the myriad issues, vagaries, and inconsistencies that arise for students of karate-do, judo, kendo, kenjutsu, aikido, and iaido as their training develops. He examines such questions as: • What is the relationship between the student and teacher, and what should one expect from the other? • What does rank really mean? • How do you correctly and sensitively practice with someone less experienced than you? • What does practice look like as one ages? • Why do budo arts put such an emphasis on etiquette? • And many others Lowry also gives practical advice for beginning and advanced students on improving structural integrity in posture and movement, focusing under stress, stances and preparatory actions before engaging with an opponent, and recognizing a good teacher from a bad one.

Download or read book TORITE NO KATA English written by Bruce R Bethers and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the sphere of Traditional Kodokan Judo, various self-defense methods and katas were created and practiced by Kodokan Judo students at different times. One of these methods was the Torite No Kata, created in 1924 by a group of Kodokan Judo experts belonging to the metropolitan police force. This study was led by the teacher Yamashita Yoshitsugu (first 10th Dan of Kodokan Judo) with the approval of the teacher Jigoro Kano. Torite No Kata shows great technical refinement and preserves the shinken shobu principles of Traditional Kodokan Judo and ancient Jujutsu. By studying the Torite No Kata carefully we will learn how to perform the atemi correctly, how to defend ourselves against different knife attacks, how to locate vital points, how to perform joint lock techniques on the fingers, wrist, knee, ankle and elbow, and how to learn some forms of renkoho or police driving. It is therefore an extremely useful and effective kata from the perspective of self-defense. Unfortunately, this method has fallen into disuse. Our goal is to teach and spread this kata so that students and teachers from all disciplines can benefit from this formidable method.
