Book The Tall Tale in American Folklore and Literature

Download or read book The Tall Tale in American Folklore and Literature written by Carolyn Schmidt Brown and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Carolyn Brown s mind, the tall tale is not necessarily an account of the adventures of a larger-than-life hero, nor is it just a humorous first-person narrative exaggerated to outlandish proportions. It is as well an interaction between teller and audience a game played at the hazy border between the credible and the incredible, a challenge and an entertainment at the same time. The tall tale is also a social statement that identifies and binds a folk group by flaunting the peculiar knowledge and experiences of group members, and it is a tool for coping with a stressful or even chaotic world, for conquering life s problems by laughing at them.

Book Tales from the Hills and Hollers

Download or read book Tales from the Hills and Hollers written by Arlen Davidian and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are legends and stories and yarns and sayings and, finally, truths. But these truths might not quite meet the criteria for presentation as evidence in a court of law... With the flair of a true storyteller, Arlen Davidian expertly weaves together the tales he has encountered to create a patchwork portrait of life in rural Arkansas. Each life-the hobo, the Civil War soldier, the foreign exchange student, and the housewife-is captured vividly in the stories that Davidian relays. Whether they seem like hard truths or tall tales, each story gives the reader insight not only into the people of rural America but into the common heart of humanity. Readers may find that the Tales from the Hills and Hollers are not so different from the tales they too could tell about family members, neighbors, and friends.

Book Mysteries of the Ozarks

Download or read book Mysteries of the Ozarks written by Ellen Gray Massey and published by Skyward Publishing Company. This book was released on 2004-07-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mysteries of the Ozarks, Volume I, as will be the case in all subsequent volumes, is comprised of short stories, suitable for family reading, placed in the beautiful Ozark Mountains. The stories of this volume are fiction, with the writers showing, in print, the beauty of the region in their stories of romance, the intrigue of the Ozarks in their fantasy and adventure tales, or the historical significance of the area in the fictionalized stories of the Ozark Bluff Dwellers or the roles of some Ozark residents during the Civil War. And, of course, the book would not be complete without a tale or two of supernatural beings dedicated to the folklore that is a part of the Ozarks. In compiling this and future volumes to follow, we invited published writers with Ozark connections to submit stories for possible inclusion. In doing so, our only stipulation was that the works be short stories and fit some definition of mystery. From the submissions, we selected stories from nineteen prolific writers for this first volume. You will be amazed at the tales. Enjoy, but be forewarned and selective. Reading of some selections in the evening, especially on a dark, stormy night, is at your own risk. Book jacket.

Book Postregional Fictions

Download or read book Postregional Fictions written by Clare Chadd and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from recent debates about the validity of regional studies and skepticism surrounding the efficacy of the concept of authenticity, Clare Chadd’s Postregional Fictions focuses on questions of southern regional authenticity in fiction published by Barry Hannah from 1972 to 2001. The first monograph on the Mississippi author’s work to appear since his death, this study considers the ways in which Hannah’s novels and short stories challenge established conceptual understandings of the U.S. South. Hannah’s writing often features elements of metafiction, through which the putative sense of “southernness” his stories dramatize is complicated by an intense self-reflexivity about the extent to which a sense of place has never been foundational or essential but has always been constructed and performed. Such texts locate a productive terrain between the local and the global, with particular relevance for critical apprehensions of the post-South and postsouthern literature. Offering sustained close readings of selected stories, and focusing especially on Hannah’s late work, Chadd argues that his fiction reveals the region constantly shifting in a process of mythmaking, dialogue, and performance. In turn, she uses Hannah’s work to suggest how notions of the “South” and “southernness” might survive the various deconstructive approaches leveled against them in recent decades of southern studies scholarship. Rather than seeing an impasse between the regional and the global, Chadd’s reading of Hannah shows the two existing and flourishing in tandem. In Postregional Fictions, Chadd offers a new interpretation of Hannah based on an appreciation of the vital intersection of southern and postmodern elements in his work.
