Book excerpt: The 6th century legendary seer-poet Taliesin tasted the liquid of Inspiration and underwent a series of metamorphoses. This was the archetype of bardic initiation and as he changed shape he traced within himself the changes of the cosmic powers. He became the Knower whose words were a mythological map. Celtic mythology is vast and rich, but presents difficulties to interpretation. The present work provides an extensive guide through Celtic mythology in terms of comparisons with other European and Indo-Iranic mythologies. As it proceeds, a map of a deep and ancient mythological and theological structure begins to reveal itself.

This book, the first of its kind in decades, celebrates that recognition and offers a new look at this world treasure. An extraordinary compound of buildings that complements the cactus-studded environs and mountain backdrop of the Scottsdale desert in Arizona, Taliesin West is Wright’s ode to desert living and one of his greatest and most visited venues. Here, amidst palo verde trees and coyotes, the visitor finds an oasis of sparkling pools and low-slung modern buildings that are uniquely suited to the site—indeed a veritable paradise that seems to have emerged from the wilderness. The expression of profound vision and the product of determination, artistry, and imagination, here Wright brought forth an organic masterpiece from the elements of the earth. Begun in 1937, the compound served as a place of exploration, a place of work, a place of camaraderie and culture, and a place of living for Wright, for his family, and for the apprentices of the Taliesin Fellowship, who had joined the architect to learn and to work with him side-by-side. A most unusual place and community, Wright’s legacy lives on even today. Taliesin West: At Home with Frank Lloyd Wright explores the life within structures that make up Wright’s desert masterpiece, from Garden Room to Cabaret Theatre, and delves into the many stories that have made the place at once a crucible for creation and a home.

Book excerpt: It is the ultimate quest for the ultimate treasure. Chasing a map tattooed on human skin. Across an omniverse of intersecting realities. To unravel the future of the future. Kit Livingstone’s great-grandfather appears to him in a deserted alley during a tumultuous storm. He reveals an unbelievable story: that the ley lines throughout Britain are not merely the stuff of legend or the weekend hobby of deluded cranks, but pathways to other worlds. To those who know how to use them, they grant the ability to travel the multi-layered universe of which we ordinarily inhabit only a tiny part. One explorer knew more than most. Braving every danger, he toured both time and space on voyages of heroic discovery. Ever on his guard and fearful of becoming lost in the cosmos, he developed an intricate code—a roadmap of symbols—that he tattooed onto his own body. This Skin Map has since been lost in time. Now the race is on to recover all the pieces and discover its secrets. But the Skin Map itself is not the ultimate goal. It is merely the beginning of a vast and marvelous quest for a prize beyond imagining. The Bright Empires series—from acclaimed author Stephen R. Lawhead—is a unique blend of epic treasure hunt, ancient history, alternate realities, cutting-edge physics, philosophy, and mystery. The result is a page-turning, adventure like no other. “Anything but ordinary . . . Dynamic settings are mixed with unpredictable adventures [and] parallel worlds.” —BookPage

Book The Language of Landscape

Download or read book The Language of Landscape written by Anne Whiston Spirn and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eloquent and powerful book combines poetry and pragmatism to teach the language of landscape. Anne Whiston Spirn, author of the award-winning The Granite Garden: Urban Nature and Human Design, argues that the language of landscape exists with its own syntax, grammar, and metaphors, and that we imperil ourselves by failing to learn to read and speak this language. To understand the meanings of landscape, our habitat, is to see the world differently and to enable ourselves to avoid profound aesthetic and environmental mistakes. Offering examples that range across thousands of years and five continents, Spirn examines urban, rural, and natural landscapes. She discusses the thought of renowned landscape authors--Thomas Jefferson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frederick Law Olmsted, Lawrence Halprin--and of less well known pioneers, including Australian architect Glenn Murcutt and Danish landscape artist C. Th. Sørensen. She discusses instances of great landscape designers using landscape fluently, masterfully, and sometimes cynically. And, in a probing analysis of the many meanings of landscape, Spirn shows how one person's ideal landscape may be another's nightmare, how Utopian landscapes can be dark. There is danger when we lose the connection between a place and our understanding of it, Spirn warns, and she calls for change in the way we shape our environment, based on the notions of nature as a set of ideas and landscape as the expression of action and ideas in place.

Book excerpt: Taliesin Long before Tony and Zac joined Galpol, Camp Bellidon was an idea floating around the lofty offices of the Galpol Supreme Council. Neutronite didn't exist in large quantities, and there were no hyper-doors. Galpol was happy to go about the business of policing the Galaxy as it had done for thousands of years, but as their influence expanded, so did their need for officers and man-power. It became necessary to recruit students. Gradually, these became younger as training demands became more rigorous. Of course, cadets were secondary school students - not to be used in operational work. Well, that was the idea, but it was strange how police cases began to intrude into their studies. They began to practise real police work. Sometimes the kids could do things the senior officers couldn't - such as go undercover to deal with youth problems. For instance, there was this kid who knew how to make neutronite - a strange stuff that generated dark energy. Everything would have been fine if the Ganglions hadn't captured him and his father. Even Galpol knew that combining Ganglions and Neutronite was not a good recipe for peace in the cosmos. Things became even more convoluted when the Ganglions fell out with each other, and a radical faction siezed control of their kingdom. Suddenly, Galpol had to rescue Ganglia's royal family. Could they ever become allies? About the Author Geoff was born in Jersey, then under German occupation, during World War II. Soon after the war, his family moved to Brisbane, Australia. He was educated at All Souls' School, Charters Towers - a rather traditional boarding school after the English style. What knowledge one didn't learn through the ears was well and truly belted in through the rear end, complete with blood blisters. His first contact with the cane was for not running around a sports oval fast enough. He now prides himself on a complete disinterest on sports and knows nothing about cricket. This led to his creative and artistic sides developing. He had a way with words, and was a skilled debater.

Book excerpt: This inaugural issue is devoted to studies of Taliesin I. Designed and constructed in 1911 upon Wright’s return to Wisconsin from Europe, Taliesin I burned in August 1914. It thus became the most difficult Wright residence for Wright scholars to examine. In this volume’s critical essays, Neil Levine offers a view of the different layers of meaning of Taliesin I; Scott Gartner explains the legend of the Welsh bard Taliesin and its meaning for Wright; Anthony Alofsin considers the influence of the playwright Richard Hovey and the feminist Ellen Key on Wright’s and Cheney’s thought of the period; and Narciso G. Menocal suggests that the Gilmore and O’Shea houses in Madison, Wisconsin, are a collective antecedent to Taliesin I. To conclude the volume, Anthony Alofsin has written what amounts to a catalogue raisonné of the drawings and photographs of Taliesin I. Surprisingly, he finds no photographs of the living area and argues that those that have been published are in fact of Taliesin II.

Book excerpt: The great work of Welsh literature, translated in full for the first time in over 100 years by two of its country's foremost poets Tennyson portrayed him, and wrote at least one poem under his name. Robert Graves was fascinated by what he saw as his work's connection to a lost world of deeply buried folkloric memory. He is a shapeshifter; a seer; a chronicler of battles fought, by sword and with magic, between the ancient kingdoms of the British Isles; a bridge between old Welsh mythologies and the new Christian theology; a 6th-century Brythonic bard; and a legendary collective project spanning the centuries up to The Book of Taliesin's compilation in 14th-century North Wales. He is, above all, no single 'he'. The figure of Taliesin is a mystery. But of the variety and quality of the poems written under his sign, of their power as exemplars of the force of ecstatic poetic imagination, and of the fascinating window they offer us onto a strange and visionary world, there can be no question. In the first volume to gather all of the poems from The Book of Taliesin since 1915, Gwyneth Lewis and Rowan Williams's accessible translation makes these outrageous, arrogant, stumbling and joyful poems available to a new generation of readers.
