Book excerpt: Presents the lives of eight individuals whose experiences illuminate a variety of dilemmas and anxieties that most of us encounter at different points of our lives. According to Spinelli (psychology, Regent's College), therapy at its most fundamental level involves the act of revealing, reassessing, and reconstructing the life stories that clients tell themselves in order to establish or maintain meaning. The existential therapist must not only listen, but must remain "un-knowing," i.e. open to new interpretation of that which is seemingly familiar, thus bringing to light unexamined possibilities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funny, tough, and heartbreaking — often all at once — Mimi Lipson’s debut collection is a grand tour of bars, diners, bus stations, dog parks, hardcore clubs, vacant lots, and other places that draw people whose inner lives are richer than their wallets. Lipson’s alter ego, the sharp-tongued and sharp-eyed Kitty, appears in a variety of guises: as a seven-year-old on a Florida vacation scammed by her roguish father, as a college student who receives a stunningly crucial education outside the classroom, as a passenger whose life changes on a cross-country bus. After meeting her parents, her brother, her friends and coworkers, we are introduced to Isaac, the sui generis man-child who becomes both her lover and her charge, a human roller-coaster who swings her between delight, exasperation, and mortal peril. Like a dinner composed of appetizers, Lipson’s book is very nearly a novel, in mosaic form, without all the boring parts. Her wit is as sharp as a serpent’s tooth, her sentences as percussively satisfying as billiard balls clicking into the pocket.

Book excerpt: In the winter of 2012 a series of recording were made in the small hamlet of Osikovce, West Carpathians. The subject of the recordings was a man called Marus Pohansky, considered by many to be one of the last true Carpathian Witches. Descended from a long line of Pagan practitioners he lived according to a philosophy that would have been familiar to his ancestors, yet without the pretension often found in modern or new age "guru's". He was a man who simply did what he and his family had always done. Not much of a teacher, he often told stories and it was only after a while that I began to realise the nuggets I was looking for were buried somewhere in these innocuous tales. This is a book of four of his tales. They are true stories, according to Marus, and involve real life characters. The places are certainly real enough as I have visited them myself, but as for the tales.....well, who knows. However, whether the stories are true or not, they were believed by Marus and many local people; and wrapped within tales are perhaps deeper memories of times and ways of being which may soon pass.

The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer in the late Middle Ages. • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-03-29

Download or read book The Book of Unknowing written by David S. Herrstrom and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Unknowing meditates on John's confrontation with the incandescent Jesus, a figure of our desire for immortality. Guiding us through the Gospel's coming to grips with Jesus, the poet David Sten Herrstrom prefers sparking the imagination to arguing a thesis, as he explores John's own obsessions, such as image (light), symbol (water), sign (water to wine), shapeliness (symmetry), loves (Peter, Mary's), and above all, words (the Word, the body of Jesus). The result is a heady, literary engagement not afraid of wit and paradox. For anyone who loves literature or whose business is interpretation--ministers and teachers--this book blossoms with fresh revelations about the many voices of Jesus living in the House of the Interpreter and interacting with another interpreter (Nicodemus), as well as about John the interpreter who continually pauses to explain Jesus' motives, metaphors, and the meaning of his death. This meditation on John's Gospel takes the goat's leaping approach to the craggy language of John and Jesus rather than the methodical rock climber's. And along the way, to help him find footholds on the how and why of John's strategies, the author calls on other poets, from William Blake to Emily Dickinson and Miguel de Unamuno. The result: a poet's rather than a preacher's, theologian's, or scholar's reading of John's book, one which crosses the borders of disciplines. Throughout The Book of Unknowing, David Herrstrom is unsettled and exhilarated by the peculiar orneriness and fragrance of John's book, by its strange particulars that grab him by the throat and call lives into question. As William Blake has said, "Exuberance is Beauty," and this is an exuberant book.

Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation about Monasticism and its meaning for the book that follows * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices The Cloud of Unknowing (Middle English: The Cloude of Unknowyng) is an anonymous work of Christian mysticism written in Middle English in the latter half of the 14th century. The text is a spiritual guide on contemplative prayer in the late Middle Ages. The Cloud of Unknowing draws on the mystical tradition of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and Christian Neoplatonism, which focuses on the via negativa road to discovering God as a pure entity, beyond any capacity of mental conception and so without any definitive image or form. This tradition has reputedly inspired generations of mystical searchers from John Scotus Erigena, through Book of Taliesin, Nicholas of Cusa and St. John of the Cross to Teilhard de Chardin (the latter two of whom may have been influenced by "The Cloud" itself). Prior to this, the theme of "Cloud" had been in the Confessions of St. Augustine (IX, 10) written in AD 398. (courtesy of wikipedia.com)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fourteenth-century England an anonymous monk wrote an extraordinary text illuminating the life of contemplative devotion and the drama of the soul’s union with God. Precariously heretical in its day, it became a classic of Christian mystical thought. Dr. Ira Progoff’s brilliant new translation and commentary illustrate The Cloud of Unknowing’s ongoing relevance. Dr. Progoff reveals a bridge spanning the perilous abyss between modern psychology’s self-conscious analytic thought and the pressing spiritual needs of modern man. Praise for Ira Progoff’s The Cloud of Unknowing “One of the classic guides to spiritual experience revealing the dynamics of the inner life.”—The Washington Post “[Dr. Progoff’s] translation makes a psychological genius come alive.”—Harry A. Overstreet “Astonishingly modern and timely . . . This fourteenth-century mystic speaks to us with a message that is as vital today as it was then.”—New York Post “Translated from archaic to modern English with lucidity and fine comprehension . . . a delightful surprise.”—The Dayton Journal Herald

Book The Cloud of Unknowing

Download or read book The Cloud of Unknowing written by and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For of all other creatures and their works, yea, and of the works of God, a man may through grace have full knowledge, and well he can think of them. But of God Himself can no man think. And therefore, I would leave all that I can think, and choose to love what I cannot think. For He may well be loved, but not thought. By love may He be gotten and held, but by thought never.”—The Cloud of Unknowing Few things are as eternal in this world as man’s quest to better know and understand his Creator. Because the human mind is far too small to fully grasp the Almighty, believers who try to approach Him intellectually often “freeze up,” entering into a “cloud of unknowing.” But God is approachable. The Cloud of Unknowing dates back as far as the fourteenth century and has inspired generations of seekers in their efforts to connect with God. Created as a primer to instruct young monks to develop techniques for encountering God, its tone is not academic or austere but rather a loving call for believers to grow closer to God through meditation and prayer. If you desire to experience God in your heart, and yourself in God’s heart, The Cloud of Unknowing will be a book to read and reread for a lifetime.
