Book Great Western Railway

Download or read book Great Western Railway written by Andrew Roden and published by White Lion Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roden’s comprehensive new history of this remarkable railway company tells the story of nothing less than the opening-up of the isolated Southwest of England to the trade and tourism of the modern age. It has left us with soaring termini like Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads as well as glorious railway institutions like the Night Riviera overnight sleeper to Cornwall that endure to this day (not least thanks to the author’s own campaigning!). While the GWR’s green locomotives and chocolate and cream carriages may have given way to purple, anyone who wants to return to the golden age of the railways will find the company’s history an enthralling journey.

Book A History of the Great Western Railway

Download or read book A History of the Great Western Railway written by Colin Maggs and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the most iconic railway company of the great age of steam. The initials 'GWR' conjure an evocative picture of a Brunswick green locomotive hauling tea-and-cream-coloured coaches through a verdant West Country landscape. However, the GWR was not just engines and trains. In this comprehensive history, Colin Maggs, one of the country's foremost railway historians, tells of other, perhaps less well-known aspects of the company's history: its construction and expansion; the activities of its publicity department; and its sea, air and road services. It was a caring, cradle-to-the-grave employer and at Swindon even provided a hospital, school, baths and recreational facilities. These and other fascinating aspects of the company are all revealed in this accessible book, illustrated with over 100 photographs and period posters, many in colour.

Book A History of the Great Western Railway

Download or read book A History of the Great Western Railway written by G. A. Sekon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Great Western Railway: Being the Story of the Broad Gauge Here is another example of wasted energy. At the commencement of the past year a discussion arose, in an engineering journal, concerning the third-class parliamentary fares charged on the Great Western Railway. I joined in the correspondence, and promised to devote a chapter of this book to the subject. After I had gone to considerable trouble in obtaining full information on the question, the Great Western Directors decided that from tst july 1894 third-class fares on their railway should be abolished, and only one penny per mile charged for third class passengers. This was clearly a case of 'love's labour lost.' Critical readers will no doubt find that some errors more or less important have crept into the work, and I shall feel indebted to any of them who will point out such slips. Nor do I expect the opinions I have expressed in this book to pass unquestioned; indeed, one of our most notable railway officials, who did me the honour of revising the description of an incident in which he was prominently concerned, at one part of the account observed 'that is a matter of opinion only, ' so that even he did not in that particular agree with me. In the railway and engineering journals to which I contribute, articles from my pen rightly receive critical treatment from the readers; nor is this criticism always of the most gentle description, as the following extracts from a critic's remarks will show: Mr Sekon says that Mr should have profited by the experience of his predecessor.
