Book Tales of the Fish Patrol

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tales of the Fish Patrol” is a collection of seven short stories written by Jack London. Based on his own experiences, London harks back at his teenager years spent aboard various fishing boats in San Francisco Bay during the early 1900s. At the time, the waters contained rich oyster beds, and people of all ages and creeds descended upon them for profit. Jack was one of these oyster pirates, but later had a change of conscience and become a member of the 'Fish Patrol', a group dedicated to enforcing the laws created to protect the waters from illegal fishing and other activities. These seven short stories describe the dangerous and often exciting encounters London had with the pirates of San Francisco Bay. Contents include: “White and Yellow”, “The King of the Greeks”, “A Raid on the Oyster Pirates”, “Charley's Coup”, “The Siege of the 'Lancashire Queen'”, “Demetrios Contos”, and “Yellow Handkerchief”. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Book Children s Fiction 1900 1950

Download or read book Children s Fiction 1900 1950 written by John Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume explores how the genre of school stories had become firmly established by the turn of the twentieth century, having been built on the foundations laid by writers such as Thomas Hughes and F.W. Farrar. Stories for girls were also taking on a more exciting complexion, inspired by the ‘Katy’ books of Susan Coolidge. The first five decades of the twentieth century saw further developments in children’s fiction. In this comprehensive volume, John and Jonathan Cooper examine each decade in turn, with alphabetically arranged entries on popular children’s writers that published works in English during that period. 206 different authors are covered, many from the United States and Canada. Each entry provides information on the author’s pseudonyms, date of birth, nationality, titles of works, place and date of publication and the publisher’s name. The artist responsible for a book’s illustrations is also identified where possible. With over 200 illustrations of cover designs and dustwrappers, many of which are now rare and have never before been published, this book will delight collectors, dealers, scholars, librarians, parents and all those who simply enjoy reading children’s fiction.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Jack London

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Jack London written by Jay Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London's first-hand engagement with the world--the process of becoming and maintaining himself as a citizen of the world--helps define the kind of writing he produced. It is insufficient now to call him a naturalist writer if his principal concern was to reflect and represent, not the usual fare of violence and natural forces that we as literary theorists have used to periodize London's work, but rather something larger, more indeterminant, contemporary. The word modern appears often in the pages of this handbook, and though it is not new to call London a modernist, the sheer weight of the scholarship in this present volume that attests to this alternative designation gives it a thorough grounding that previous attempts lacked. London called his times the Machine Age, not just to underscore the rapidity of modern life and its new mechanization, but also to highlight the need for a new social and economic order. The purpose of this handbook is to honor him as a representative American writer of the age as he understood it.
