Book excerpt: John Wetherill, one of the famous Wetherill brothers and trader at Kayenta, Arizona, is the man who discovered Nonnezoshe, which is probably the most beautiful and wonderful natural phenomenon in the world. Wetherill owes the credit to his wife, who, through her influence with the Indians finally after years succeeded in getting the secret of the great bridge. After three trips to Marsh Pass and Kayenta with my old guide, Al Doyle of Flagstaff, I finally succeeded in getting Wetherill to take me in to Nonnezoshe. This was in the spring of 1913 and my party was the second one, not scientific, to make the trip. Later this same year Wetherill took in the Roosevelt party and after that the Kolb brothers. It is a safe thing to say that this trip is one of the most beautiful in the West. It is a hard one and not for everybody. There is no guide except Wetherill, who knows how to get there. And after Doyle and I came out we admitted that we would not care to try to return over our back trail. We doubted if we could find the way. This is the only place I have ever visited which I am not sure I could find again alone.

Book excerpt: For half a century, beginning in the early 1960s, Vaughn Short walked, horse-packed, and floated the canyons and mesas of the Southwest. Along the way, stories and poems grew in his mind. Around evening campfires, he shared these pearls with those lucky enough to be in his company. Vaughn Short was our Robert Service, the Poet Lauriat of canyon country. Although Vaughn has moved on, his books of poetry connect us to an earlier time before passage through these areas became common.

Book Tales from the Trails

Download or read book Tales from the Trails written by Michael Clinton and published by Glitterati. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Clinton not only travels the world to take photographs that he records in his books, he travels the world--the 7 continents, in fact--to run, and in Tales from the Trails, he explains why we should all do the sameIncludes contributions from fitness expert Jenny Hadfield and two-time seven continent marathoner Kelly McLay, among othersProvides inspiration and motivation from a community of runners and why they run, covering the gamut of emotional to physical rationalesRunning: it's as simple as striding forward just one foot after another, but as author Michael Clinton has learned over more than 40 years as a runner, it's so much more than just exercise. It's a test of physical and mental endurance and a way to connect with the environment, the global community of runners, and, ultimately, yourself. From the streets of Paris, Buenos Aires, all the way to Sydney, Clinton has gone the distance, never forgetting his running shoes in all of his globetrotting adventures to over 120 countries. In Tales from the Trails, Clinton along with numerous contributors, including George A. Hirsch, chairman of the New York Road Runners and founder of the New York City five-borough marathon, detail inspirational stories of trial, tribulation, and triumph, revealing how running has helped one find love, strengthened a relationship with God, and assisted in overcoming fear and disappointment. Tales from the Trails is a reminder to lace up and hit the trails to run for your life, love, and happiness.
