Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Jewish History, Vol. 1 of 3 Agrippa held in his hand a roll of papyrus neatly written, which he was extending towards his eldest daughter. Thou wilt deliver it with my blessing to thy brother, beloved, he said, speaking with difficulty; therein is penned all that has occurred to thy father, in a life full Of vicissitude; it may serve as a warning and a lesson to my son in good or evil fortune. Tell him, Berenice, that I have done this, that when my heart is still, my tongue mute, enemies - and the fortunate have always many such - shall not speak falsely of Agrippa. When he reads in this scroll the tale Of my weakness and folly, let him consider, that his father was a man, sub ject to human passions, human foibles. That night, amid the tears of all who knew his virtues, the last monarch Of Judea paid the debt of nature and with him died the last faint ray of independence in Palestine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews, Vol. 3 of 3 The contest raged more and more fiercely - for the abundant stores Within the Temple so un spariiigly supplied the few adherents of Eleazar, that, in their drunkenness, they would occasionally sally out against John. When these attacks took place, John stood on the defensive; from the outer porticoes repelled Simon, and with his engines within harassed Eleazar. When the drunken or overwearied troops of Eleazar gave him repose, he would sally forth against Simon, and waste the city. Simon in his turn would drive him back; and thus the space around the Temple became a mass of rum and desolation; and in these desultory conflicts, the granaries, which, if carefully protected and pru dently husbanded, might have maintained the city in plenty for years, were either wantonly thrown to waste or set on fire by Simon, lest they should be seized by John. Book Folktales of the Jews V 3 Tales from Arab Lands

Download or read book Folktales of the Jews V 3 Tales from Arab Lands written by Dan Ben Amos and published by Jewish Publication Society. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to these generous donors for making the publication of the books in this series possible: Lloyd E. Cotsen; The Maurice Amado Foundation; National Endowment for the Humanities; and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture Tales from Arab Lands presents tales from North Africa, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq in the latest volume of the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. This is the third book in the multi-volume series in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg?s timeless classic, Legends of the Jews. The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives (IFA), named in Honor of Dov Noy, at The University of Haifa, a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Fairy Tales and Fables LL the peoples of the world have u their fairy tales and fables, their legends and their folk-lore, but perhaps no literature is richer in this respect than that of the Jews. Hebrew lore has, indeed, been a source of inspiration to the writers of many lands for ages, and yet Jewish children of to-day have very little Oppor tunity to read the beautiful stories to be found in the Talmud and the Midrash, those vast treasuries of Hebrew learning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Heart of Israel Jewish Tales and Types Right is not for the one who is responsible for the present effort to say, but must be left to the decision of an impartial public, which will not fail to tell truthfully whether it has found aught of pleasure or profit in the stories Of Jewish life hereinafter contained. But it may be permitted to the writer to say that, in his humble opinion, both of the criticisms quoted above are based on erroneous conceptions. The telling of tales is neither independent of nor contradictory to the Torah; that is to say, it may be a most excellent method of inculcating pure and noble lessons, and has always been used for such purpose by the great teachers in Israel. The land was fertile, and nobody had ever entertained an idea that bad weather might some year affect the crops and cause a scarcity of grain. Book The Classic Tales

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ellen Frankel
  • Publisher : Jason Aronson, Incorporated
  • Release : 1993-07-01
  • ISBN : 1461662419
  • Pages : 702 pages

Download or read book The Classic Tales written by Ellen Frankel and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1993-07-01 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three hundred Jewish tales in this extraordinary volume span three continents and four millennia. Culled from traditional sources—the Bible, Talmud, Midrash, hasidic texts, and oral folklore—and retold in modern English by Ellen Frankel, these stories represent the brightest jewels in the vast treasure chest of Jewish lore. Beautifully clothed in contemporary language, these classic tales sparkle with the gentle and insightful humor of the Jewish folk imagination. And like so much of Jewish literature, these stories abound in allusions to classic Jewish texts. Biblical cadences, phrases from the prayer book, and ideas from Jewish proverbs and heroic legends resonate in the air when these tales are read or told aloud. In The Classic Tales, history sheds its dust to become as intimate as family memory. While the breadth and depth of this book make it completely unique, three special features also help distinguish it: God appears without gender (though certainly not without personality); women characters, so often nameless in the original biblical text, wear their midrashic names (e.g., Noah's wife Naamah, Abraham's mother Amitlai, Lot's wife Edith); and many tales of Sephardic origin have been included to correct the common American bias toward Eastern European sources. What's more, this volume has been uniquely designed to be of use to educators, rabbis, parents, and students. It features a chronological table of contents as well as six separate indexes?arranged by Jewish holidays, Torah and Haftorah readings, character types, symbols, topics, and proper names and places—to make the tales easily referenced in a wide variety of ways. Anyone who needs a story to inspire a child, to illustrate a point, to develop a sermon, or just to uplift his or her own thirsting soul will find just the right one in The Classic Tales.
