Book excerpt: Tales of Entropy is a story game for 2-6 players. Each player takes a central role in depicting a dramatic scenario that sets the scene for murder and romance, friendship and conflict. The central characters are set against each other from the start, but it is up to the players—and the dice—whether the tense starting situation spirals into chaos and destruction or a blaze of glory at the end. The game is based on a pre-written scenario, on top of which the players build a rich tapestry of content according to their own vision, creating a unique play experience. Each playthrough takes around 2-3 sessions, about 10 hours of playtime. You can play one of the many scenarios created by the other players, or write your own, it is easy and fun. You can send your work to be included in the online scenario database and share your ingenuity with the world. The game book includes ten scenarios ready to play out of the box: Want to tell a tale of power, war and love from the Viking Age, or experience an adventure of Sherlock Holmes in the exotic Limehouse? How about joining a struggling rock band near a breakthrough in the 90s, or defending a child with special needs against an obsessive FBI agent. The choice is yours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Jeremy Robert Johnson has been bubbling under the surface of both literary and genre fiction. His short stories present a brilliantly dark and audaciously weird realm where cosmic nightmares collide with all-too-human characters and apocalypses of all shapes and sizes loom ominously. In "Persistence Hunting," a lonely distance runner is seduced into a brutal life of crime with an ever-narrowing path for escape. In "When Susurrus Stirs," an unlucky pacifist must stop a horrifying parasite from turning his body into a sentient hive. Running through all of Johnson's work is a hallucinatory vision and deeply-felt empathy, earning the author a reputation as one of today's most daring and thrilling writers. Featuring the best of his independently-published short fiction, as well as an exclusive, never-before-published novella "The Sleep of Judges"--where a father's fight against the denizens of a drug den becomes a mind-bending suburban nightmare--Entropy in Bloom is a perfect compendium for avid fans and an ideal entry point for adventurous readers seeking the humor, heartbreak, and terror of JRJ's strange new worlds.

Book Thomas Pynchon s Animal Tales

Download or read book Thomas Pynchon s Animal Tales written by Keita Hatooka and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his works, Thomas Pynchon uses various animal characters to narrate fables that are vital to postmodernism and ecocriticism. Thomas Pynchon’s Animal Tales: Fables for Ecocriticism examines case studies of animal representation in Pynchon’s texts, such as alligators in the sewer in V.; the alligator purse in Bleeding Edge; dolphins in the Miami Seaquarium in The Crying of Lot 49; dodoes, pigs, and octopuses in Gravity’s Rainbow; Bigfoot and Godzilla in Vineland and Inherent Vice; and preternatural dogs and mythical worms in Mason & Dixon and Against the Day. Through this exploration, Keita Hatooka illuminates how radically and imaginatively the legendary novelist depicts his empathy for nonhuman beings. Furthermore, by conducting a comparative study of Pynchon’s narratives and his contemporary documentarians and thinkers, Thomas Pynchon’s Animal Tales leads readers to draw great lessons from the fables, which stimulate our ecocritical thought for tomorrow.

Book Time Machine Tales

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul J. Nahin
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-12-24
  • ISBN : 3319488643
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book Time Machine Tales written by Paul J. Nahin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a broad overview of time travel in science fiction, along with a detailed examination of the philosophical implications of time travel. The emphasis of this book is now on the philosophical and on science fiction, rather than on physics, as in the author's earlier books on the subject. In that spirit there are, for example, no Tech Notes filled with algebra, integrals, and differential equations, as there are in the first and second editions of TIME MACHINES. Writing about time travel is, today, a respectable business. It hasn’t always been so. After all, time travel, prima facie, appears to violate a fundamental law of nature; every effect has a cause, with the cause occurring before the effect. Time travel to the past, however, seems to allow, indeed to demand, backwards causation, with an effect (the time traveler emerging into the past as he exits from his time machine) occurring before its cause (the time traveler pushing the start button on his machine’s control panel to start his trip backward through time). Time Machine Tales includes new discussions of the advances by physicists and philosophers that have appeared since the publication of TIME MACHINES in 1999, examples of which are the chapters on time travel paradoxes. Those chapters have been brought up-to-date with the latest philosophical thinking on the paradoxes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ice Age Challenge refers to the challenge that we face globally to create a new foundation for living when the coming Ice Age climate shuts down most of the world's agriculture, possibly 100 to 150 years from now. The novel is the first part of the second episode of the series, The Lodging for the Rose, an eight-part science-fantasy centered on universal love, by Rolf A. F. Witzsche. - We truly are in a race against time, the greatest race since the dawn of man, 'racing' to create the technologies, economies, finances, politics, and social cultures that enable us to shift agriculture into efficient indoor facilities in order to protect our food production in the coming Ice Age environment. The Earth has been in an Ice Age for 1.8 million years, interspersed by the occasional warm period, like the present one that is ending in spite of global warming. The necessary infrastructures for survival are technologically feasible, but will we empower ourselves to create them? That appears to be less certain. It seems that we have been put in race without the skills for it. But then, don't we have the potential to be fast learners? In the course of exploring the question the novel touches on the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Aryan invasion in historic India, the face of Islam, the fascist holocaust, depopulation, global warming, nuclear fusion power, indoors agriculture, and principles of marriage, sex, culture, and science.
