Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of a Traveler: Selected After a brief __sojourn in Germany and France, Irving went, in 1826, to Spain, where he remained three years, working upon his Life of Columbus. The labor resulted also in three/other books of imperishable beauty and interest, The Alhambra, the Conquest of Granada, and the Legends of the Conquest of Spain. While there he received unexpectedly the appointment of Secretary of Legation to the court of St. James, and in 1830 he resumed his residence in England. From the Royal Society of Literature he received the gold medal of King George, and from the University of Oxford the degree of which title, however, his mod esty never permitted him to use. Two years later he returned to America, and met with an overwhelming reception from his ad miring countrymen. It is like being con gratulated on the high prize when one has drawn a blank; for I have just as great a desire as any one of the public to pene trate the mystery of that very singular personage, whose voice fills every corner of the world, without any one being able to tell from whence it comes. He who keeps up such a wonder ful and whimsical incognito. Whom nobody knows, and yet whom every body thinks he can swear to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Tales From Tales of a Traveller, Vol. 1 The purpose of the "Pocket Classics" is so well known that it seems scarcely necessary to say more of this one than that this purpose has been held in mind as steadfastly as was possible to the writer. Elucidation of the text, presentation of the influences which moulded the author's character, as well as the principles which guided his work, in connection with the details of his biography, and some few suggestions as to feasible methods of using the Tales as a basis for the technical study of good expression, were the main considerations. Hearty thanks are due from the readers as well as from the writer for the cordial permission of the Houghton Mifflin Company to use Charles Dudley Warner's Irving. It has been the basis of all biographical detail, and many critical estimates, to such an extent that apologies may be necessary for resemblances in expression where the thought has taken on its coloring, though the quotation marks were impossible. Book Travelers Along the Way A Robin Hood Remix

Download or read book Travelers Along the Way A Robin Hood Remix written by Aminah Mae Safi and published by Feiwel & Friends. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ragtag band of misfits gets swept up in Holy Land politics in Travelers Along the Way by Aminah Mae Safi, a thrilling YA remix of the classic legend of Robin Hood. Jerusalem, 1192. The Third Crusade rages on. Rahma al-Hud loyally followed her elder sister Zeena into the war over the Holy Land, but now that the Faranji invaders have gotten reinforcements from Richard the Lionheart, all she wants to do is get herself and her sister home alive. But Zeena, a soldier of honor at heart, refuses to give up the fight while Jerusalem remains in danger of falling back into the hands of the false Queen Isabella. And so, Rahma has no choice but to take on one final mission with her sister. On their journey to Jerusalem, Rahma and Zeena come across a motley collection of fellow travelers—including a kind-hearted Mongolian warrior, an eccentric Andalusian scientist, a frustratingly handsome spy with a connection to Rahma's childhood, and an unfortunate English chaplain abandoned behind enemy lines. The teens all find solace, purpose and camaraderie—as well as a healthy bit of mischief—in each other's company. But their travels soon bring them into the orbit of Queen Isabella herself, whose plans to re-seize power in Jerusalem would only guarantee further war and strife in the Holy Land for years to come. And so it falls to the merry band of misfits to use every scrap of cunning and wit (and not a small amount of thievery) to foil the usurper queen and perhaps finally restore peace to the land. Praise for Travelers Along the Way: "Rousing ... Wholly original in its cultural perspective and its centering of strong female characters. ... By creating an almost all-female cast, Safi makes women the heart of her story at a time when they were seen as a 'bargaining chip.'" —Shelf Awareness, starred review "If you love heists, found family, and stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, then put Aminah Mae Safi's heartfelt and humorous take on Robin Hood at the very top of your TBR." —Jodi Meadows, New York Times bestselling co-author of My Lady Jane

Book Margaret Atwood

Download or read book Margaret Atwood written by Shannon Hengen and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors Shannon Hengen and Ashley Thomson have assembled a reference guide that covers all of the works written by the acclaimed Canadian author Margaret Atwood since 1988, including her novels Cat's Eye, The Robber Bride, Alias Grace, and the 2000 Booker Prize winner, The Blind Assassin. Rather than just including Atwood's books, this guide includes all of Atwood's works, including articles, short stories, letters, and individual poetry. Adaptations of Atwood's works are also included, as are some of her more public quotations. Secondary entries (i.e. interviews, scholarly resources, and reviews) are first sorted by type, and then arranged alphabetically by author, to allow greater ease of navigation. The individual chapters are organized chronologically, with each subdivided into seven categories: Atwood's Works, Adaptations, Quotations, Interviews, Scholarly Resources, Reviews of Atwood's Works, and Reviews of Adaptations of Atwood's Works. The book also includes a chapter entitled 'Atwood on the Web,' as well as extensive author and subject indexes. This new bibliography significantly enhances access to Atwood material, a feature that will be welcomed by university, public, and school librarians. Margaret Atwood: A Reference Guide 1988-2005 will appeal not only to Atwood scholars, but to students and fans of one of Canada's greatest writers.
