Book Tales from the Pit

Download or read book Tales from the Pit written by David G. Schwartz and published by Gambling Studies. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing in a casino presents challenges and rewards not seen in many workplaces. With hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake every minute, table games pits are high-stress workplaces. Managing a workforce of dealers and attending to the needs of players brings stresses of its own. In 2015, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's Center for Gaming Research received a grant from the UNLV University Libraries Advisory Board that enabled it to undertake an oral history project intended to capture the stories of table games managers, including both those currently working in the field and those who have retired. Drawn from these interviews, Tales from the Pit provides an overview of how the interviewees felt about a variety of topics, ranging from their experiences breaking in as new dealers to their transitions to management and the changes the industry has seen over their careers. The current and former managers speak candidly about the owners, bosses, dealers, and players who made each day challenging. This book illuminates the past several decades of casino history through the words of those who lived and made it.

Once upon a time there was a Princess. . . . who made a pit stop. While the Birds and Beasts changed her tires, her Fairy Godmother told her she was in last place! With just one lap left! She might as well give up! Give up? Not THIS princess! Instead, she hit the gas! Join Her Royal Highness in the driver’s seat for a mad dash to the finish in this exciting ode to auto racing. With appearances by fable and fairy tale favorites including the Tortoise and the Hare, the Frog Prince, and ALL of the Wicked Witches, this rollicking mash-up of race cars and royalty is a true celebration of both girl power and horsepower. “The full-page illustrations are saturated with color and express the action so vividly readers will nearly hear the roar of the racetrack. The emphasis on the Princess’ racing skill and zeal for her sport is empowering and refreshing.” —Kirkus Reviews “With its breakneck speed and massive number of storybook references, The Princess and the Pit Stop is sure to be a story time favorite.” —Shelf Awareness

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adventure tale for our times, the author combines real world events and supernatural elements in the style of a classical epic to tell a sometimes snarky, sometimes uproarious, and very poignant modern tale. Meet Hank Allensworth and Wilson Evans in a modern reflection of the Epic of Gilgamesh. An epic bromance between a Marine and his corpsman running around Oceanside, California . Degenerate Lance Corporals who have recently returned from Afghanistan, spending most of their time drunk at The Purple Church. One night while they're out drinking they are called back to base and the battalion is put on stand by because during the conflict with ISIS, the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to end the proxy war and get involved themselves. Soon after, Hank and Doc go with the regiment to keep the Iranians from crossing the Euphrates. The war kicks off and the Marines push across Iraq and into Iran. Hank and Doc both are wounded and sent home. The rest of the story they deal with survivor's guilt, alcoholism, PTSD, covering up for a murder, and trying to manage deteriorating love lives. I don't know if I could say there's any deeper meaning than gratuitous sex and violence, but I can guarantee you that if you've spent more than three days in an infantry battalion you will love this book.

  • ISBN : 0889713952
  • Pages : 71 pages

Download or read book The Pit written by Tara Borin and published by Harbour Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-24 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in a small-town, sub-Arctic dive bar, this debut poetry collection explores the complexities of addiction and the person beneath, and the possibility of finding home and community in unexpected places. Among Borin’s poems are portraits of the bar’s regular customers and employees—recurring characters, like those who might appear in a dark and unconventional sitcom. The religious night janitor catalogues the day’s sins; the retired barmaid gussies up at the mirror; the regular customers and their regular habits are described to a new employee: “R has a two-drink limit. A likes a coaster. Remember, / Mrs. O takes a chilled pilsner glass / with her bottle of Blue.” In the melancholy atmosphere of the bar and the rooms upstairs, the speakers of Borin’s poems find unexpected solace and belonging. The habits, the routine, the regulars, the predictability of it all brings some kind of chaotic order to chaotic life: We drink without even having to think about it, because it feels good to lose control, feels like regaining it.

Book Reflections from the Pit

Download or read book Reflections from the Pit written by Michael Berish and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bad things happen in "the Pit," a notorious crime-infested ghetto in downtown Miami. Michael Berish's experiences as a Miami policeman for twenty-two years (thirteen of which were in the REAL Miami Vice) serve as fuel for these exciting, intense stories about life as a cop in a tough part of a big city. Not just another collection of rehashed police stories with shootouts, car chases, and damsels in distress, Reflections from the Pit, contains individual, quirky, off-center characters. The stories focus on basic character flaws while dealing with social issues of the day: racism, hangings from police cruisers, sexism, affirmative action, prejudice, drug-dealing cops and corruption, homelessness, segregation, and police brutality. Berish uses his intimate knowledge of "the Pit" to bring these tales alive. This book pulls no punches; it shows you the dark side of police work: the good, the bad and the ugly (warts and all), both the humor and the tragedy. These reflections, covering more than one hundred years of history, give one pause for thought and a peek into the human swamp of life in "the Pit." WEBSITE: www.realmiamivice.com
