Book excerpt: APPARITIONS OF ACADEMIA The magnificent three-story native stone Tuscarora Female Seminary was strategically located on the spectacular panoramic ridge just to the west of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church and its adjoining cemetery on the outskirts of the small hamlet of Academia in mid-western Juniata County in Central Pennsylvania The beautiful edifice opened in 1857 sponsored by the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church with the objective of offering a challenging education to young ladies. Just to the east of the church there was located the Tuscarora Academy, a school for young men also sponsored by the same church. Unfortunately the seminary's duration was short-lived and through the years the building suffered from neglect and disuse. As the years progressed, rumors, tales, and legends abounded as to strange occurances that allegedly happened within the walls of the school. Over the years the popularity of making nocturnal excursions to the site of the old girls' school grew immensely. You simply hadn't lived until you experienced the thrill, exhilaration, and sometimes fear and horror of a nocturnal visit to the Academia girls' school. With the advent of the internet, the popularity of the girls' school as a site for abnormal activity increased dramatically. Soon the "Academia Girls' School" was listed as "One of the Most Haunted Locations in Central Pennsylvania." Nocturnal visitations to the ridge at Academia became constant occurrences. Apparitions of Academia portrays an event that occurred on the eve of the outbreak of the Civil War concerning the deaths of two students from Virginia. Due to the nature of the girls' deaths they are condemned to spend an enternity as earthbound waifs until a cerntain event occurs that will free them from their obligations. Their nocturnal vigils and spritely celebrations and rituals are undoubtedly the source of the abnormal activities observed on the Academia Ridge.
