Book AKAN ASHANTI FOLKTALES Revised and Annotated

Download or read book AKAN ASHANTI FOLKTALES Revised and Annotated written by and published by Prince Sarfo-Adu. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of 75 Ashanti tales recorded in the Ashanti and Kwawu areas of Ghana. Each folktale in Twi/Akan dialect of the Tshi language, is followed by an English translation. The English translation is, throughout, made as nearly literal as possible.(At this point, one meets a certain difficulty in a conflict between a desire for accuracy and an endeavour to give a translation acceptable to English ears). First published in 1930 by R.S. Rattray, this edition features a modern Akan/Twi orthography with a brief introduction to the Language. Ashanti folktales often tell a moral lesson, describe a myth, or answer a question about the natural world. Most of the Ashanti tales use animal characters to represent human qualities such as jealousy, honesty, greed, and bravery. Ananse, the spider, is a trickster figure who appears in many of the Ashanti tales. With regard to the classification of these stories, it will be observed that the majority of them fall under one or other of the well-known headings: drolls and cumulative tales; apologues or tales with a moral; aetiological stories, accounting for physical characteristics in men and beasts, e.g. How the Leopard became Spotted; etymological tales, e.g. How the Ram came to be called Odwanini. Each and all of the stories in this volume would, however, be classed by the Akan-speaking African under the generic title of “Anansesɛm” (Spider stories), whether the spider appeared in the tale or not.

Book With Wolseley to Kumasi A Tale of the First Ashanti War

Download or read book With Wolseley to Kumasi A Tale of the First Ashanti War written by F. S. Brereton and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In F. S. Brereton's 'With Wolseley to Kumasi: A Tale of the First Ashanti War', readers are transported back to the late 19th century when British imperialism clashed with the Ashanti Empire in West Africa. Brereton's writing style is vivid, detailed, and fast-paced, making the reader feel as if they are right alongside the soldiers on their dangerous journey. The book provides a unique insight into the military tactics, political tensions, and cultural clashes of the time, shedding light on a lesser-known aspect of colonial history. Brereton's descriptions of the African landscape and the Ashanti people are both respectful and intriguing, adding depth to the narrative. F. S. Brereton, a British author and historian, drew inspiration for this book from his own experiences serving in the military and his interest in colonial warfare. His background lends authenticity to the detailed descriptions of battles and strategy in 'With Wolseley to Kumasi'. Brereton's expertise in military history shines through in his accurate portrayal of the events that unfolded during the First Ashanti War. I recommend 'With Wolseley to Kumasi: A Tale of the First Ashanti War' to readers interested in military history, colonial conflicts, and adventure stories. Brereton's gripping narrative and historical accuracy make this book a must-read for anyone fascinated by the intersection of war and imperialism in Africa.

More important, they offer insight into the oral traditions of different cultures and deal with universal human dilemmas that span differences of age, culture, and geography. Animal fables, proverbs, ghost stories, funny tales, and tales of enchantment provide a unique reading experience for all ages. A category index groups the tales by plot and character, e.g., humorous, supernatural, and "pourquoi" tales, married couples, enchanted sweethearts, etc. Like all great literature, these tales can be read with fascination on many levels, making Best-Loved Folktales of the World a classic and enduring collection.
