Book excerpt: Raven Darkhorse wanted to be loved by her parents. It wasn't to be.They were too caught up in the battle over their love and alcohol to notice the small child quivering at every slap, every fist, every drunken orgy. Their eventual demise was a foregone conclusion, but no one expected them to die in a fire with their ten-year-old daughter bearing witness.Lucy Darkhorse took over care of her niece. She raised her on Molly's Mountain beside a creek. Molly's Creek was a central, natural part of their lives in the Ouachita Mountains. Lucy made sure Raven had a better life than she'd had as a baby and young child. Alcohol never passed Lucy's lips nor was it ever present in her home. She vowed one thing Raven would never see in her home was a drunken brawl.Raven's rescue began with her aunt. The beginning was a good start.Years of education later, Raven stood up for herself and her friend, Lynn. She helped Lynn avoid death at the hands of a vile man. Then death stalked them both.A dog that looked more like a rag mop than an animal, a solitary man who wrote stories, and the love of Lucy Darkhorse, helped Raven and Lynn start building the lives they longed for.As independent and brilliant women, they began building their lives. Love and honor followed. The power of women should never be underestimated.

Book Ouachita Heritage

Download or read book Ouachita Heritage written by Bill Avery and published by . This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a life with no electricity, running water, phone service, or traffic, where people labored from dawn until dusk for their basic necessities. Picture a time when the most important things were family, integrity, and hard work. Such was life in the Ouachita Mountain region of central Arkansas in the mid 1940s. During that era, five-year-old Bill Avery and his family spent two memorable years on a small farm. Life was full of adventure as they discovered and utilized the bounties of the nature around them. It was also complete with struggles and unconditional love. His parents toiled daily to benefit their children-even to the point of extreme hardship-all the while training them to be truthful, generous, responsible, and kind. Through their influence, Bill and his siblings developed strong, independent characters and learned the value of an honest day's work. Rich with history, charm, and inspiring tales, Ouachita Heritage tells of a way of life that has been forgotten in our age of modern technology and conveniences. Through Bill's research, stories, and recollections, you will experience what life used to look like for rural families in America and understand just how much perseverance was required to survive.

The next minute, they were disoriented and lost, dealing with thunderstorms, bears, losing their compass, a cell phone not working, and rain that lasted for days. But by far the most inspiring and challenging, was meeting a man called Earnest. A crazy man they thought, but still they followed him to his cave. The next morning he disappeared. Later that day as the helicopter arrived to airlift them to safety, Earnest appeared again. This time he showed himself as, his true self. The Angel Of Ouachita

Book The Kings of Casino Park

Download or read book The Kings of Casino Park written by Thomas Aiello and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2011-08-07 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, Monroe, Louisiana, was a town of twenty-six thousand in the northeastern corner of the state, an area described by the New Orleans Item as the “lynch law center of Louisiana.” race relations were bad, and the Depression was pitiless for most, especially for the working class—a great many of whom had no work at all or seasonal work at best. Yet for a few years in the early 1930s, this unlikely spot was home to the Monarchs, a national-caliber Negro League baseball team. Crowds of black and white fans eagerly filled their segregated grandstand seats to see the players who would become the only World Series team Louisiana would ever generate, and the first from the American South. By 1932, the team had as good a claim to the national baseball championship of black America as any other. Partisans claim, with merit, that league officials awarded the National Championship to the Chicago American Giants in flagrant violation of the league’s own rules: times were hard and more people would pay to see a Chicago team than an outfit from the Louisiana back country. Black newspapers in the South rallied to support Monroe’s cause, railing against the league and the bias of black newspapers in the North, but the decision, unfair though it may have been, was also the only financially feasible option for the league’s besieged leadership, who were struggling to maintain a black baseball league in the midst of the Great Depression. Aiello addresses long-held misunderstandings and misinterpretations of the Monarchs’ 1932 season. He tells the almost-unknown story of the team—its time, its fortunes, its hometown—and positions black baseball in the context of American racial discrimination. He illuminates the culture-changing power of a baseball team and the importance of sport in cultural and social history.

Book excerpt: The hills have scares in this haunted history of the Ozark Mountains from the paranormal investigator and author of Missouri’s Haunted Route 66. Tourists flock to the Ozarks region every year to dip their paddles in the pure waters of its wilderness, or to lose themselves in the happy bustle of its theme parks. But the serene hills and hollows often hide something darker. The Civil War and the Trail of Tears left their marks on the region, as did the James-Younger Gang and the Baldknobbers. Ghosts linger in resorts and penitentiaries, while UFO’s and buried treasure rest in uneasy graves. Those startled by seeing a hellhound run through their backyard, however, might also catch a glimpse of author Janice Tremeear and her team of researchers in hot pursuit of the mysteries of the Ozarks.

Book Monroe and West Monroe Louisiana

Download or read book Monroe and West Monroe Louisiana written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Monroe, Louisiana originated in the late 1700s with The official beginning of the Ouachita Post. French settlers, including Don Juan Filhiol with his land grant of 1,680 acres from the King of Spain, came to this region and laid the foundations for a community once known as Fort Miro but incorporated as Monroe in 1820. West Monroe (formerly Trenton) would follow in 1889 and today the two towns are separated by a river but connected in preserving their shared history. "Silver sparkling water" and "Silver River" defined Ouachita to the early Native American tribes in Northwestern Louisiana. The Ouachita tribe members were indeed the earliest known inhabitants, living on the land before the establishment of Fort Miro and the bustling villages of the 1790s. Such growth and progress led to the appearance of railroads and plantation systems in the 19th century along with showboats and the adoption of Monroe's Charter. The 20th century brought the Ouachita Parish Library in 1916; the arrival of Delta Airlines in 1927; the first radio station, KMLB, in 1930; the opening of Louisiana Junior College, now University of Louisiana at Monroe, in 1931; the organization of the Little Theatre in 1932; and a wide variety of civic, cultural, and social opportunities for the residents of Monroe and West Monroe. Memories of such grand events are coupled alongside the fond recollections of everyday life in this unprecedented volume of vintage photographs.

Book Tales from the Diamond City Social Club

Download or read book Tales from the Diamond City Social Club written by Douglas Simpson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What about this book? For one thing, at first look, it seems to be poorly organized. Granted, it does seem to be confusing. However, as disorganized as it appears to be, all four of the chapters are connected quite logically. All four of the chapters exist for one purpose: each one of the four has something important to say about why Diamond City is so unique and has a very bright future. The focus now is to make that bright future a reality. Chapter I: Let us consider the unique kind of people our residents are. For example, read this chapter and find out how our people demonstrated the strong humanitarian traits that are embedded in the folks of Diamond City. They are the core of Diamond City. Chapter II: This one is easy. It is connected to where prospective visitors need to go. In this chapter, there is an answer for any visitor and/or prospect that asks a question about any topic having to do with Diamond City. Chapter III: If you are looking to check out what is in Diamond City, you will have to do some research on our animals, especially those that may come to your property at any time of the day or night. This chapter has two animal tales to tell. One is about a real-life story of humans attempting to deal with three kinds of precocious animals. Find out who wins! The second animal tale is about intergroup relations between Canada geese, mallard ducks, migrant ducks, and one coot. It may cause you to compare their behavior with some humans you know. Chapter IV: Here we have done a favor for our prospects. They now have a source where they can find out firsthand from our residents what it is like to live in DC.
