Book excerpt: Central Americans are one of the largest Latino population groups in the United States. Yet, Arturo Arias argues, the cultural production of Central Americans remains little known to North Americans. In Taking Their Word, Arias complicates notions of the cultural production of Central America, from Mexico in the North to Panama in the South. He charts the literature of Central America’s liberation struggles of the 1970s and 1980s, its transformation after peace treaties were signed, the emergence of a new Maya literature that decenters Latin American literature written in Spanish, and the rise and fall of testimonio. Arias demonstrates that Central America and its literature are marked by an indigenousness that has never before been fully theorized or critically grasped. Never one to avoid controversy, Arias proffers his views of how the immigration of Central Americans to North America has changed the cultural topography of both zones. With this groundbreaking work, Arias establishes the importance of Central American literature and provides a frame for future studies of the region’s culture. Arturo Arias is director of Latin American studies at the University of Redlands. He is the author of six novels in Spanish and editor of The Rigoberta Mench Controversy (Minnesota, 2001).

Book Taking Wittgenstein at His Word

Download or read book Taking Wittgenstein at His Word written by Robert J. Fogelin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Wittgenstein at His Word is an experiment in reading organized around a central question: What kind of interpretation of Wittgenstein's later philosophy emerges if we adhere strictly to his claims that he is not in the business of presenting and defending philosophical theses and that his only aim is to expose persistent conceptual misunderstandings that lead to deep philosophical perplexities? Robert Fogelin draws out the therapeutic aspects of Wittgenstein's later work by closely examining his account of rule-following and how he applies the idea in the philosophy of mathematics. The first of the book's two parts focuses on rule-following, Wittgenstein's "paradox of interpretation," and his naturalistic response to this paradox, all of which are persistent and crucial features of his later philosophy. Fogelin offers a corrective to the frequent misunderstanding that the paradox of interpretation is a paradox about meaning, and he emphasizes the importance of Wittgenstein's often undervalued appeals to natural responses. The second half of the book examines how Wittgenstein applies his reflections on rule-following to the status of mathematical propositions, proofs, and objects, leading to remarkable, demystifying results. Taking Wittgenstein at His Word shows that what Wittgenstein claims to be doing and what he actually does are much closer than is often recognized. In doing so, the book underscores fundamental—but frequently underappreciated—insights about Wittgenstein's later philosophy.

If lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, non-gender-conforming, and questioning people are to take back the word of Scripture for themselves, they must take it back in a new way. Essays examine queer strategies for reading, queer ethical models from the Hebrew Scriptures, and queer good news stories from the Christian Scriptures.

Book The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

Download or read book The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows written by John Koenig and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “It’s undeniably thrilling to find words for our strangest feelings…Koenig casts light into lonely corners of human experience…An enchanting book. “ —The Washington Post A truly original book in every sense of the word, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows poetically defines emotions that we all feel but don’t have the words to express—until now. Have you ever wondered about the lives of each person you pass on the street, realizing that everyone is the main character in their own story, each living a life as vivid and complex as your own? That feeling has a name: “sonder.” Or maybe you’ve watched a thunderstorm roll in and felt a primal hunger for disaster, hoping it would shake up your life. That’s called “lachesism.” Or you were looking through old photos and felt a pang of nostalgia for a time you’ve never actually experienced. That’s “anemoia.” If you’ve never heard of these terms before, that’s because they didn’t exist until John Koenig set out to fill the gaps in our language of emotion. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows “creates beautiful new words that we need but do not yet have,” says John Green, bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars. By turns poignant, relatable, and mind-bending, the definitions include whimsical etymologies drawn from languages around the world, interspersed with otherworldly collages and lyrical essays that explore forgotten corners of the human condition—from “astrophe,” the longing to explore beyond the planet Earth, to “zenosyne,” the sense that time keeps getting faster. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is for anyone who enjoys a shift in perspective, pondering the ineffable feelings that make up our lives. With a gorgeous package and beautiful illustrations throughout, this is the perfect gift for creatives, word nerds, and human beings everywhere.

Book Don t Take My Word for It

    Book Details:
  • Author : Keith Jenkins
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-04-03
  • ISBN : 9780692422670
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Don t Take My Word for It written by Keith Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Don't Take My Word for It" encourages people to question. The author doesn't want anyone to take his word for anything. Jenkins takes theology to a newly personal level by challenging the thoughts that have been put in our heads as we "Buy the Can" from our own teachers and preachers. This book is intended to be used as a Thought Provoker for its reader. It is not intended to start an argument or persuade anyone to think in a certain way or believe a certain thing. Its purpose is to cause a more thorough examination of the details of one's faith. It is written for Ordinary Everyday Christians who love and trust God, and want to live more in His way, to help examine their faith and strengthen it in the knowledge that their beliefs can be built on the singular foundation of Scripture. Remember that the bottom line of every desire of the writer is to help all that read this book, himself included, to more clearly and completely digest the Scriptures and apply them to our everyday lives. It is the goal of the writer that this book stir the hearts of the readers to better, and more personal interpretation of the Bible, and to more accurate handling of the Word of God so as to be properly prepared for all good works. When talking about Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses at the door, Dr. Walter Martin, the "Bible Answer Man," said of these cults that "If their faith could not stand close examination it should not stand at all." And while any of us may disagree with Dr. Martin on any single point of doctrine, we know that he believed that faith untried was not true faith. And let's all face it, if believers learned to "rightly divide the Word of Truth" there would be no cults, no Islam and far less atheists. Use this book to look into the details of your faith and don't take the author's word for anything, but do your own examination of the Scriptures and see what you believe, what God would have you believe, and what can be done to bring those two into greater agreement. It is not to be used by Academics or Atheists, as it would do little to further their thought processes or causes, unless they want to get saved.
