So when playwright 'Draven' bequeaths his latest play to the rural Rivervue Theatre, the stage is set for drama. Props-maven Mackenzie Russell is no fan of the Larrikin, the subject of Draven's new play. But she is a big supporter of her hometown, Brachen, where the guy is a local legend. She would no more let Brachen's reputation be trashed than she would pull on a costume and perform in Draven's latest masterpiece. Her secret stage aspirations are strictly private. But someone needs to tell that to Dylan North, the enigmatic loner sleeping rough in Rivervue Theatre's fire-escape, after he catches her running lines in the props room. Dylan just wants to keep a low profile; he knows that his rough appearance and poor language skills make people uncomfortable. Except Kenzie - with her, Dylan feels more at ease than he's ever been before and he's fast becoming her biggest fan. In more ways than one. But theatres are founded on drama and this one is packed full of secrets. Hers. His. The Larrikin's. Draven's. Secrets that if revealed could tear the town, the theatre - and Dylan and Kenzie - apart.

Book The Sounds of Early Cinema

Download or read book The Sounds of Early Cinema written by Richard Abel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sounds of Early Cinema is devoted exclusively to a little-known, yet absolutely crucial phenomenon: the ubiquitous presence of sound in early cinema. "Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre-arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The practice of mixing sounds with images differed widely, depending on the venue (the nickelodeon in Chicago versus the summer Chautauqua in rural Iowa, the music hall in London or Paris versus the newest palace cinema in New York City) as well as on the historical moment (a single venue might change radically, and many times, from 1906 to 1910). Contributors include Richard Abel, Rick Altman, Edouard Arnoldy, Mats Björkin, Stephen Bottomore, Marta Braun, Jean Châteauvert, Ian Christie, Richard Crangle, Helen Day-Mayer, John Fullerton, Jane Gaines, André Gaudreault, Tom Gunning, François Jost, Charlie Keil, Jeff Klenotic, Germain Lacasse, Neil Lerner, Patrick Loughney, David Mayer, Domi-nique Nasta, Bernard Perron, Jacques Polet, Lauren Rabinovitz, Isabelle Raynauld, Herbert Reynolds, Gregory A. Waller, and Rashit M. Yangirov.

Book excerpt: One of the most beloved novels of all time, Colleen McCullough's magnificent saga of dreams, struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian outback has enthralled readers the world over. The Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys—an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys' only daughter, Meggie, and the haunted priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart—and the intense joining of two hearts and souls over a lifetime, a relationship that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years between the world wars, Manhattan's Fourteenth Street-Union Square district became a center for commercial, cultural, and political activities, and hence a sensitive barometer of the dramatic social changes of the period. It was here that four urban realist painters--Kenneth Hayes Miller, Reginald Marsh, Raphael Soyer, and Isabel Bishop--placed their images of modern "new women." Bargain stores, cheap movie theaters, pinball arcades, and radical political organizations were the backdrop for the women shoppers, office and store workers, and consumers of mass culture portrayed by these artists. Ellen Wiley Todd deftly interprets the painters' complex images as they were refracted through the gender ideology of the period. This is a work of skillful interdisciplinary scholarship, combining recent insights from feminist art history, gender studies, and social and cultural theory. Drawing on a range of visual and verbal representations as well as biographical and critical texts, Todd balances the historical context surrounding the painters with nuanced analyses of how each artist's image of womanhood contributed to the continual redefining of the "new woman's" relationships to men, family, work, feminism, and sexuality.

Book excerpt: This is just a small tribute to the friendship I have developed with The Whetstones, since February, 2009. It began with my curiousity about the strange & wonderful buildings, located off of North Jefferson Street, in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Having driven past numerous times, this day, I decided to get out of my car, to take some photos. After about 15 minutes of walking and shooting, a slender man with blue eyes, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, came out from the wrought-iron gate, and invited me inside. As we were walking into the largest building, a woman drove up, whom he introduced as his wife, Dorothy. Walter showed me around the first floor of what used to be called "The Stardust Lounge". There was a pool room, a commercial kitchen, a bar, with space for a restaurant ... Ray Charles was a frequent visitor. The ceilings are lined with copper, the walls embedded with multi-coloured bottles, paintings hanging from the rafters - thanks to Walter's craftsmanship.. It seems the Whetstones purchased the property 15 years ago, as it was going to be condemned/demolished (The Atlanta Life Insurance building stood next door). Built in 1927, one can only imagine the lives passing through these halls. Walter asked Dorothy to show me the rest of the place. I followed her up the narrow wooden staircase. There were six pairs of men's cowboy boots lining the bottom. During the Stardust years, the bedrooms were used by "ladies" to entertain their gentlemen callers, for an hour, or so. When Walter and Dorothy moved in, they added an upstairs kitchen, opened some rooms to make a master suite, complete with an inlaid marble bathtub, then went on to build a winding stairway to the stars ....
