Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tahoe Tish stories take place during a black bear cub's first year living and learning in the Lake Tahoe forest. From emerging from the den with her Mama in the spring, through returning to the den in winter for hibernation, Tish learns how to find food and survive the human-caused perils brought by the visitors to Lake Tahoe. As a Reno, Nevada resident, I have learned to share the Lake Tahoe environment with the bears who are indigenous to our region. The purpose of writing these books is to introduce young readers to what it's like to be black bear growing up in a wild area visited by thousands of people. Some of the actions the bears undertake are exaggerated and do not happen in the wild (like using an aspen tree limb to pull trout out of a shallow stream or carrying a pot of water to douse smoking coals in a forgotten camp fire.) But who knows? Perhaps these behaviors have just not yet been documented! In Tahoe Tish and the Teddy Bear, Tish she sees people for the first time and finds out that little children have stuffed Teddys to love. In Tahoe Tish and the Forest Fire she learns that people can be careless with camp fires and her Mama teaches her what to do about that. In Tahoe Tish and the Garbgae Can Tish learns that people food smells, and probably tastes, really good...but her Mama explains why they should never eat it. Finally, in Tahoe Tish Learns to Fish her Mama shows her how to fatten up on Kokanee salmon to get ready for the next long hibernation.

Book The Millionaire Next Door

Download or read book The Millionaire Next Door written by Thomas J. Stanley and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the rich get rich? An updated edition of the “remarkable” New York Times bestseller, based on two decades of research (The Washington Post). Most of the truly wealthy in the United States don’t live in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue. They live next door. America’s wealthy seldom get that way through an inheritance or an advanced degree. They bargain-shop for used cars, raise children who don’t realize how rich their families are, and reject a lifestyle of flashy exhibitionism and competitive spending. In fact, the glamorous people many of us think of as “rich” are actually a tiny minority of America’s truly wealthy citizens—and behave quite differently than the majority. At the time of its first publication, The Millionaire Next Door was a groundbreaking examination of America’s rich—exposing for the first time the seven common qualities that appear over and over among this exclusive demographic. This edition includes a new foreword by Dr. Thomas J. Stanley—updating the original content in the context of the financial crash and the twenty-first century. “Their surprising results reveal fundamental qualities of this group that are diametrically opposed to today’s earn-and-consume culture.” —Library Journal

Book Teddy Bear Patterns

Download or read book Teddy Bear Patterns written by Barbara Barbieri McGrath and published by Charlesbridge Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teddy bears are back—this time to teach readers all about patterns. Similar to the first three books in the McGrath Math series of concept books, TEDDY BEAR PATTERNS uses rhyming verse to explain the concepts illustrated by the colorful teddies. This simple text helps children to follow along as the teddy bears sort by color, and arrange into patterns of two colors, three colors, and so on. Readers will also discover how they can use patterns to skip count, add, and even multiply, before trying their hand at creating a pattern of their own. TEDDY BEAR PATTERNS is a worthwhile addition to the classroom, especially those that already use bear counters or other manipulatives as learning tools. Back matter provides a summary of the concepts introduced in the book.

Book Friending Rosie

Download or read book Friending Rosie written by Judith Wright Favor and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In alternating voices, Judith Wright Favor and Rosie Alfaro take the reader on a frank, frustrating, and unforgettable journey. Friending Rosie: Respect on Death Row bridges the chasm between souls consigned to life behind bars, and souls enjoying the privileges of freedom. Rosie’s letters from Central California Women’s Facility, interwoven with Judith’s reflections and questions, highlight perspectives from authors of different races, religions, and languages. Marginalized people stifle their stories when there is no one to hear, but mutual listening brings forth accounts of regret, doubt, humiliation, and grace. Some stories describe difficult encounters in prison. Family members with intimate knowledge of Rosie tell their stories. Other tales illustrate surprising parallels in the inner lives of both authors. Judith follows the friendly path of Quakers who began in the 1650s to value women’s leadership and befriend prisoners. Rosie grew up Catholic, in a faith tradition that shaped her art and values. Both write stories interwoven with social challenges and spiritual practices intended to support readers in reaching out to persons behind bars. 8-12-20: It’s yours, mine, and God’s book. I’ve been lettin people know about our book and about you. People are very interested in our story, and I know this is a start of a great journey. I’m very proud of us, friend... I wanted to tell you that to me this means nothing, but to lots of people who like crime stuff, me being the youngest and the first Latina to get the d. penalty in Calif. is a big deal. I’m personally ashamed of it, but there’s people who think it’s cool. I love you and you stay safe. Tu Amiga, Rosie Incarcerating our way to safety does not work. Friendships do work. These stories, rooted in caring and respect, offer a warmly satisfying testimony to the power of friending. *****

Book The Highwaymen

Download or read book The Highwaymen written by Ken Auletta and published by Random House (NY). This book was released on 1997 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A struggle is taking place--not just among corporate titans, but among entire industries. At stake is control of the world's fastest-growing industry: communications. The contestants are Hollywood studios, television networks, and cable, telephone, computer, publishing, and consumer-electronics companies. All are vying to collect a toll on the information superhighway. And as they jockey for control, they tread on volatile ground, as one fixation after another (cable, interactive TV) is dumped in favor of the next (satellite, the Internet). There is no better account of this turmoil than the one provided here by Ken Auletta, bestselling author of Three Blind Mice ("the best book ever written on network television"*) and Greed and Glory on Wall Street, who for five years has brilliantly tracked the communications industry for The New Yorker. Auletta's access to the principal players is unparalleled (six days with Rupert Murdoch, summit meetings with John Malone), and his grasp of the issues--from boardroom politics to regulatory and technological pressures--is unmatched by any other journalist. In this riveting collection of his best pieces Auletta takes the reader on a behind-the-scenes tour of such companies as Disney, Viacom, Microsoft, Time Warner, and Telecommunications, Inc., and keenly chronicles the vanities and visions of the new Highwaymen--Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, Michael Eisner, Sumner Redstone, Bill Gates, and more. Just as Three Blind Mice was heralded as "the new bible of the broadcasting business," The Highwaymen will be received as an indispensable guide to the future of this explosive new world. * Frank Stanton, former president of CBS
