Book Tadpoles Fireflies

Download or read book Tadpoles Fireflies written by Diana Vistein and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story takes you from the recollections of a four-year-old through the years to a baby boomer's senior years. A glimpse of elementary school, junior high, and high school, to college and beyond. She shares her relationships, lets us know her family, friends, teachers, and colleagues. You will learn to know her and those who were and are part of her life- the ones who changed her life. There are loves and loses, all portrayed in a sincere, honest, and, many times, humorous way. It is written in a stream of consciousness manner, so you need to pay attention to keep up, or you'll miss some of the laughs and some of the tears, possibly all of the fun and all of the memories. The beginning is a bit like Happy Days meets A Christmas Story, without the bunny suit or BB gun. Through all of this is the emotional story of the person living it, and you'll feel it-the joy and the pain, the friendships, and hardships, and the great love of her life. The theme of this tale told from a senior point of view is the leap from childhood to puberty to adulthood and trying to negotiate all the changes physically, mentally, and strategically. The author leads you along the way in a manner that pushes you turn to the next page. Moving along with this small-town Midwestern firstborn tomboy through her senior years, the time when the realization hits that most of her life has gone by. Time to now assess all the choices, the decisions, the mistakes, and the victories and maybe devise a plan for the remaining future. Wanting to leave a story for her daughters and their children, Diane opens up her heart and lets you in, pulls you in. A journal becomes a novel, and the story is told. It is overwhelmingly a feel-good story with a bit of heartbreak thrown in...the story of a life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informative, entertaining, and beautifully illustrated look at the beloved firefly For centuries, the beauty of fireflies has evoked wonder and delight. Yet for most of us, fireflies remain shrouded in mystery: How do fireflies make their light? What are they saying with their flashing? And what do fireflies look for in a mate? In Silent Sparks, noted biologist and firefly expert Sara Lewis dives into the fascinating world of fireflies and reveals the most up-to-date discoveries about these beloved insects. From the meadows of New England and the hills of the Great Smoky Mountains, to the rivers of Japan and mangrove forests of Malaysia, this beautifully illustrated and accessible book uncovers the remarkable, dramatic stories of birth, courtship, romance, sex, deceit, poison, and death among fireflies. The nearly two thousand species of fireflies worldwide have evolved in different ways—and while most mate through the aerial language of blinking lights, not all do. Lewis introduces us to fireflies that don't light up at all, relying on wind-borne perfumes to find mates, and we encounter glow-worm fireflies, whose plump, wingless females never fly. We go behind the scenes to meet inquisitive scientists who have dedicated their lives to understanding fireflies, and we learn about various modern threats including light pollution and habitat destruction. In the last section of the book, Lewis provides a field guide for North American fireflies, enabling us to identify them in our own backyards and neighborhoods. This concise, handy guide includes distinguishing features, habits, and range maps for the most commonly encountered fireflies, as well as a gear list. A passionate exploration of one of the world's most charismatic and admired insects, Silent Sparks will inspire us to reconnect with the natural world.

Book excerpt: Carter Sutherland is a think tank executive living near D.C. His world is precise and analytical; his demeanor, reserved. Because he is partially color-blind, his black-and-white perspective is both literal and physical—until he meets client Tracee Green—a synesthete who sees words as colors. When she offers to take him on 4 sensory-rich, cerebral journeys to improve his perception and emotional intelligence, he readily agrees, not sure what to expect. What he encounters is far more astounding than he could imagine. With the power of suggestion and exotic beverages, Tracee guides him to pivotal eras in time where he assumes the personas of Arturo, Arthur, Kar, and RT. With each journey (both sensual and gut-wrenching), he learns about himself and the world around him—insights he applies to a camouflage project at work. There’s no denying that Carter is attracted to his vision guide, and the feeling is mutual. Tracee delights in teasing him with innuendos and temptations, leaving him unsure about what is real and not. One thing is certain: his wife, Sarah, isn’t thrilled with his visits to the Green Light Foundation. But the storyline changes from an innocent quest of self-discovery to something more ominous when Carter notices suspicious activities in the grand Victorian where he is treated. Convinced their operations are a front for something else, he starts to poke around. Dangerous. With the help of his son, an investigative reporter, a subplot is revealed.

Book excerpt: On a secluded hillside in Jamaica lies Firefly, Noël Coward's peaceful retreat. Here, between sundowners and sunsets, brandies and cigarettes, the seventy-year-old Coward whiles away his days -- a comforting, frustrating pattern of unwanted breakfasts, reluctant walks, graceless dips in the pool -- in the company of his manservant Patrice. Set over a series of summer days in the early 1970s, Firefly flits through Coward's dreams and memories, his successes and regrets, against a sultry, seductive backdrop of blue skies and glistening water. Colorful and contemplative, this is a moving portrait of old age and friendship, and a poignant appraisal of a life well lived.

  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book The Firefly Dance written by Sarah Addison Allen and published by BelleBooks. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bright lights flicker in the dark evenings of summer. Pinpoints of hope float against the black descent of night. The sweetest of small and innocent creatures finds its way through the shadows. Fireflies seem to dance on sheer air, illuminating the space between heartbeats. Children give off a similar brave glow, despite the challenges of their young lives. The lessons of childhood are often painful, the shedding of fragile wings in the gloam of an uncertain future. These rich novellas are small jewels reflecting the essence of what it means to grow up dancing among the shadows of life, carrying a brave, small beacon because you know that even the brightest days always, always, end in darkness. Childhood can be so sweetly sad and sadly sweet, profound and deceptively easy to categorize, yet poignant to remember. New York Times bestselling novelist Sarah Addison Allen (GARDEN SPELLS, SUGAR QUEEN, THE PEACH KEEPER) anchors THE FIREFLY DANCE with her wistful and funny novella about Louise, a North Carolina girl whose keen observations of the lives around her weaves an unforgettable spell with just a hint of everyday magic. Phyllis Schieber's Sonya, a child of Holocaust survivors, is confronted with the responsibilities of her legacy when she has a poignant encounter with a classmate, another child of survivors, and her mother, in a local shop in their 1970's New York neighborhood. Kathryn Magendie's Petey deals wryly with her family's move from the cool blue mountains of North Carolina to the hot flatlands of Texas. Augusta Trobaugh's stoic Georgia boy leads us through his surreal encounter with a mysterious backwoods toddler who turns out to be anything but ordinary.
