Book Blacks and Britannity

Download or read book Blacks and Britannity written by Danièle Joly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Featuring original research concerning young African-Caribbeans in Birmingham, this book addresses complex issues of urban violence and insecurity, racism and discrimination, alienation, resistance and social networks. Employing the methodology of sociological intervention developed by Alain Touraine, the book explores the experiences of a group of young people who are simultaneously presumed to be victims and perpetrators of violence. It examines their relationship to this violence, its meanings for and effects upon them, how they constitute themselves as social actors and subjects, and their capacity for action. The book also addresses the fact that ethnic monitoring and multicultural policies place the question of ethnicity on the British social and political agenda alongside issues of racism and discrimination. Exploring both the perceived and personally experienced position of young people within this context, it sheds important new light upon processes of group identification and action.

It examines factors that have underpinned the emergence and occurrence of racial and religious hate crime and the approaches and policies that have been pursued by the state, especially the criminal justice system, to combat this problem. Crucially, it also provides insight into the challenges that are faced in the contemporary period (especially in the wake of the 2016 EU referendum) in combatting hate crime. Additionally the book briefly considers the importance of the rhetoric of the Trump campaign and the administration's early policies to the contemporary manifestations of racial and religious hate crime.

Within a society it is expressed by material that may stir up racial hatred and/or discrimination. Book Homelessness

  • Author : David Cowan
  • Publisher : Routledge

  • ISBN : 0429678827
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book Homelessness written by David Cowan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume presents the results of in-depth research into the application of the UK homelessness legislation in relation to community care, the Children Act 1989, violence to women, and racial harassment. This is supplemented with a consideration of policies and practices in 15 local authority homelessness departments. It is argued that government created the nation of a successful, or "appropriate" applicant, but this could not be translated into actual practice as the original legislation did not facilitate it. In fact, in the mid-1990s, government became more concerned with notions of inappropriateness, stereotyping those using the homelessness legislation and creating modern "folk devils". This was the background to the 1996 changes to the homelessness legislation which have created the notion of the "inappropriate" applicant. It is argued that the new legislation is more concerned with denial, deterrence and privatization. The new legislation has also detrimentally affected the application of the homelessness legislation in each of the areas discussed.
