Book Schur Algebras and Representation Theory

Download or read book Schur Algebras and Representation Theory written by Stuart Martin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Schur algebra is an algebraic system providing a link between the representation theory of the symmetric and general linear groups (both finite and infinite). In the text Dr Martin gives a full, self-contained account of this algebra and these links, covering both the basic theory of Schur algebras and related areas. He discusses the usual representation-theoretic topics such as constructions of irreducible modules, the blocks containing them, their modular characters and the problem of computing decomposition numbers; moreover deeper properties such as the quasi-hereditariness of the Schur algebra are discussed. The opportunity is taken to give an account of quantum versions of Schur algebras and their relations with certain q-deformations of the coordinate rings of the general linear group. The approach is combinatorial where possible, making the presentation accessible to graduate students. This is the first comprehensive text in this important and active area of research; it will be of interest to all research workers in representation theory.

Book Handbook of Algebra

Download or read book Handbook of Algebra written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-18 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Algebra defines algebra as consisting of many different ideas, concepts and results. Even the nonspecialist is likely to encounter most of these, either somewhere in the literature, disguised as a definition or a theorem or to hear about them and feel the need for more information. Each chapter of the book combines some of the features of both a graduate-level textbook and a research-level survey. This book is divided into eight sections. Section 1A focuses on linear algebra and discusses such concepts as matrix functions and equations and random matrices. Section 1B cover linear dependence and discusses matroids. Section 1D focuses on fields, Galois Theory, and algebraic number theory. Section 1F tackles generalizations of fields and related objects. Section 2A focuses on category theory, including the topos theory and categorical structures. Section 2B discusses homological algebra, cohomology, and cohomological methods in algebra. Section 3A focuses on commutative rings and algebras. Finally, Section 3B focuses on associative rings and algebras. This book will be of interest to mathematicians, logicians, and computer scientists.

Book Trends in Representation Theory of Algebras and Related Topics

Download or read book Trends in Representation Theory of Algebras and Related Topics written by Andrzej Skowroński and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2008 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with recent trends in the representation theory of algebras and its exciting interaction with geometry, topology, commutative algebra, Lie algebras, quantum groups, homological algebra, invariant theory, combinatorics, model theory and theoretical physics. The collection of articles, written by leading researchers in the field, is conceived as a sort of handbook providing easy access to the present state of knowledge and stimulating further development. The topics under discussion include diagram algebras, Brauer algebras, cellular algebras, quasi-hereditary algebras, Hall algebras, Hecke algebras, symplectic reflection algebras, Cherednik algebras, Kashiwara crystals, Fock spaces, preprojective algebras, cluster algebras, rank varieties, varieties of algebras and modules, moduli of representations of quivers, semi-invariants of quivers, Cohen-Macaulay modules, singularities, coherent sheaves, derived categories, spectral representation theory, Coxeter polynomials, Auslander-Reiten theory, Calabi-Yau triangulated categories, Poincare duality spaces, selfinjective algebras, periodic algebras, stable module categories, Hochschild cohomologies, deformations of algebras, Galois coverings of algebras, tilting theory, algebras of small homological dimensions, representation types of algebras, and model theory. This book consists of fifteen self-contained expository survey articles and is addressed to researchers and graduate students in algebra as well as a broader mathematical community. They contain a large number of open problems and give new perspectives for research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the ancient origins of algebraic geometry in the solution of polynomial equations, through the triumphs of algebraic geometry during the last two cen turies, intersection theory has played a central role. Since its role in founda tional crises has been no less prominent, the lack of a complete modern treatise on intersection theory has been something of an embarrassment. The aim of this book is to develop the foundations of intersection theory, and to indicate the range of classical and modern applications. Although a comprehensive his tory of this vast subject is not attempted, we have tried to point out some of the striking early appearances of the ideas of intersection theory. Recent improvements in our understanding not only yield a stronger and more useful theory than previously available, but also make it possible to devel op the subject from the beginning with fewer prerequisites from algebra and algebraic geometry. It is hoped that the basic text can be read by one equipped with a first course in algebraic geometry, with occasional use of the two appen dices. Some of the examples, and a few of the later sections, require more spe cialized knowledge. The text is designed so that one who understands the con structions and grants the main theorems of the first six chapters can read other chapters separately. Frequent parenthetical references to previous sections are included for such readers. The summaries which begin each chapter should fa cilitate use as a reference.
