Download or read book Hombrecito written by Santiago Jose Sanchez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel by a brilliant new voice, Hombrecito is a queer coming-of-age story about a young immigrant’s complex relationships with his mother and his motherland In this groundbreaking novel, Santiago Jose Sanchez plunges us into the heart of one boy’s life. His mother takes him and his brother from Colombia to America, leaving their absent father behind but essentially disappearing herself once they get to Miami. In America, his mother works as a waitress when she was once a doctor. The boy embraces his queer identity as wholeheartedly as he embraces his new home, but not without a sense of loss. As he grows, his relationship with his mother becomes fraught, tangled, a love so intense that it borders on vivid pain but is also the axis around which his every decision revolves. She may have once forgotten him, disappeared, but she is always on his mind. He moves to New York, ducking in and out of bed with different men as he seeks out something, someone, to make him whole again. When his mother invites him to visit family in Colombia with her, he returns to the country as a young man, trying to find peace with his father, with his homeland, with who he’s become since he left, and with who his mother is: finally we come to know her and her secrets, her complex ambivalence and fierce love. Hombrecito—“little man”—is a moving portrait of a young person between cultures, between different ideas of himself. From an extraordinary new talent, this is a story told with startling beauty and intensity, a story for anyone searching for home, searching for a way to love.

Download or read book Time and Space written by Juan Ramón Jiménez and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written while in exile in the United States, Time and Space were originally intended to appear together in a single volume. Not until 1986, however, did they appear so in Spanish and not until 1988 were they published together in English. By presenting them together, Jiménez had wanted them to convey the same continuity of emotion, the same philosophical intensity, that he had experienced while writing them. All My Life, he wrote in his introduction, I have toyed with the idea of writing a continuous poem...with no concrete theme, sustained only by its own surprise, its rhythm, its discoveries, its light, its successive joys; that is, its intrinsic elements, its essence. That continuous poem is Time and Space the last book Jiménez wrote. Presented here in a bilingual edition, Time and Space will take readers of both English and Spanish on the longest and most sustained ride on the crest of poetry they will ever enjoy. The greatest poem in this Century... Octavio Paz Antonio T. de Nicolás, translator and editor of Time and Space is also widely known for his highly acclaimed translation of the Juan Ramón Jiménez classic, Platero and I, as well as many other works in Spanish. His first book of poetry, Remembering the God to Come, is also being published by iUniverse.com.

Book excerpt: JOHNSTONE COUNTRY. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE EVIL. Legendary national bestselling Western authors William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone return with their latest installment in the entertaining Slash and Pecos series. He blew into town like a tornado—a mysterious stranger with money to burn and a sadistic streak as wide as the Rio Grande. He says his name is Benson and he’s come to invest in the town’s future. First, he showers the banks and local businesses with cash. Then, he hires a pair of drunks to fight and get arrested so he can check out the local lawmen. After that, he warms up to a lady of the evening—with deadly results. That’s just the beginning. By the time Slash and Pecos return to town after a quick-and-dirty cargo run, Benson has enlisted half the outlaws in the territory for his own private army. The local lawmen are quickly slaughtered and the US marshals are no match. With looters amock and killers festering on every corner, a person would have to be stupid or crazy to try to take the town back . . . Luckily, Slash and Pecos are a little of both. They’ve been around long enough to see the worst in men—and they know that the best way to stop a very bad hombre . . . is to be even badder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I took the train east, all the way to El Paso, Texas. I was sure that the train making twenty miles an hour would get me to the mountain pass west of the Texas line ahead of them. The best they could hope for would be twenty or twenty-five miles a day on horseback. If New Orleans really was their destination they would almost certainly have to use this particular route. Of course they might swing north, but that didn’t make a lot of sense either, travelers using the northern route lately had been killed by roaming bands of renegade Indians that the troopers had not been able to stop. And south, well south, south they would have to swing into Mexico where the beginning of a revolution was in the making. So that would not be a smart move either. No, I would pick me a good spot overlooking the pass and be waiting for Ben and Sam Melody when they came through on their way to Louisiana. I wasn’t exactly sure just how I was going to approach these killers. But I had made a deal with Ruth Tyrell, and if I could, I would bring her two murdering nephews in alive rather than dead. If I could. I even went so far as to borrow two sets of shackles from Marshal Rex Bulett when I left Yuma. So I guess you could say I was thinking I could bring them in alive. Killing them would not be hard, killing a man is easy, capturing him alive is an altogether different thing. If I were able to get them afoot I might get the job done. I deplore killing animals to get the men I’m after, that might be the only choice available to me. And along those lines I bought two cheap horses and lead them behind me when I rode out of El Paso. I instinctively knew that stepping out into the road, blocking their path, and ordering them to surrender would not work. They would force me to shoot them, and being on horseback, the advantage would be on their side. Horses don’t like gunfire, some of them get really jumpy, and will go wild on you in a minute. I might not be able to place my shots and one or both could end up dead. But if they were afoot then the upper hand would fall back on my side. Unless I could get really lucky and walk up on them in a night camp, I might have to shoot their horses from under them. It was a dilemma no doubt, but I had given my word, and if a man has nothing else in this ole world he has that. But I also know that a man’s word, spoken, or implied, along with his belief in self worth is the most important treasure he will ever possess.
