Book World Development Report 2020

Download or read book World Development Report 2020 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Book Optimum Tillage Systems for Corn and Soybean Production and Water Quality Protection in South Central Minnesota Minnesota River Basin

Download or read book Optimum Tillage Systems for Corn and Soybean Production and Water Quality Protection in South Central Minnesota Minnesota River Basin written by Gyles Wade Randall and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tillage recommendations for corn and soybeans in south central Minnesota are presented with background research results for tillage systems and associated phosphorus and nitrogen management. Research and recommendations address no-till, strip-till, deep zone-till, ridge-till, spring single-pass (disk or field cultivator), chisel plow, and moldboard plow, as well as rotations among tillage systems. Management factors, including crop rotation, soil characteristics, nutrient management, weed management, and conservation structures are also discussed in relation to tillage systems.

Book The Soybean Through World History

Download or read book The Soybean Through World History written by Matilda Baraibar Norberg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the changing roles and functions of the soybean throughout world history and discusses how this reflects the complex processes of agrofood globalization. The book uses a historical lens to analyze the processes and features that brought us to the current global configuration of the soybean commodity chain. From its origins as a peasant food in ancient China, today the protein-rich soybean is by far the most cultivated biotech crop on Earth; used to make a huge variety of food and industrial products, including animal feed, tofu, cooking oil, soy sauce, biodiesel and soap. While there is a burgeoning amount of literature on how the contemporary global soy web affects large tracts of our planet’s social-ecological systems, little attention has been given to the questions of how we got here and what alternative roles the soybean has played in the past. This book fills this gap and demonstrates that it is impossible to properly comprehend the contemporary global soybean chain, or the wider agrofood system of which it is a part, without looking at both their long and short historical development. However, a history of the soybean and its changing roles within equally changing agrofood systems is inexorably a history about globalization. Not only does this book map out where soybeans are produced, but also who governs, wields power and accumulates capital in the entire commodity chain from inputs in production to consumption, as well as identifying the institutional context the global commodity chain operates within. The book concludes with a discussion of the main challenges and contradictions of the current soy regime that could trigger its rupture and end. This book is essential reading for students, practitioners and scholars interested in agriculture and food systems, global commodity chains, globalization, environmental history, economic history and social-ecological systems.

Book Environmental Stresses in Soybean Production

Download or read book Environmental Stresses in Soybean Production written by Mohammad Miransari and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Stress Conditions in Soybean Production: Soybean Production, Volume Two, examines the impact of conditions on final crop yield and identifies core issues and methods to address concerns. As climate and soil quality changes and issues continue to manifest around the world, methods of ensuring sustainable crop production is imperative. The care and treatment of the soil nutrients, how water availability and temperature interact with both soil and plant, and what new means of crop protection are being developed make this an important resource for those focusing on this versatile crop. The book is a complement to volume one, Abiotic and Biotic Stresses in Soybean Production, providing further insights into crop protection. - Presents insights for addressing specific environmental stress conditions in soybean production, including soil, atmospheric, and other contributing factors - Facilitates translational methods based on stress factors from around the world - Examines the future of soybean production challenges, including those posed by climate change - Complements volume one, Abiotic and Biotic Stresses in Soybean Production, providing further insights into crop protection
