It lays down the principles of a contributory modeling method, allowing debates around the concept of development; the building of scenarios; the negotiation of their implementation; and a cross-sectoral reading of their social, ecological and economic costs. This method, called Dynamic Modeling of Cost Systems, is based on a territorial communication device which articulates political, contractual and accounting innovations using deliberative and normative digital tools. In turn, populations of anatomically modern humans, Homo sapiens, came to dominate the area. Seeking to understand the nature of this replacement, which has become a hotly debated issue, Paul Mellars brings together an unprecedented amount of information on the behavior of Neanderthals. His comprehensive overview ranges from the evidence of tool manufacture and related patterns of lithic technology, through the issues of subsistence and settlement patterns, to the more controversial evidence for social organization, cognition, and intelligence. Mellars argues that previous attempts to characterize Neanderthal behavior as either "modern" or "ape-like" are both overstatements. We can better comprehend the replacement of Neanderthals, he maintains, by concentrating on the social and demographic structure of Neanderthal populations and on their specific adaptations to the harsh ecological conditions of the last glaciation. Mellars's approach to these issues is grounded firmly in his archaeological evidence. He illustrates the implications of these findings by drawing from the methods of comparative socioecology, primate studies, and Pleistocene paleoecology. The book provides a detailed review of the climatic and environmental background to Neanderthal occupation in Europe, and of the currently topical issues of the behavioral and biological transition from Neanderthal to fully "modern" populations.

In the context of economic globalization and vertical specialization, increasing the quality of export products is more critical and necessary to export success and sustainable development. The product's quality is inextricably linked to its manufacture and production, which need various types of energy and raw materials. Meanwhile, the adoption of more environmentally friendly and cleaner energy sources contributes to the achievement of sustainable production. Therefore, product quality may provide a new perspective from which to investigate the systematic relationship between greener and renewable energy sources, sustainable production and environmental regulations, as well as the nature of export competitiveness. Generally, export product quality has referred to the quality of manufactured products within the product lines. Quality refers to the relative price of a country's varieties within their respective product lines. Product sophistication assesses the composition of the aggregate exports. Different varieties of same product as per quality level are being produced by several developing and emerging economies. Within any given product line, quality converges both conditionally and unconditionally to the world's benchmark; increases in institutional quality and human capital are associated with faster quality upgrading. In turn, faster growth in quality is associated with more rapid output growth.

L'accent est surtout mis sur les aléas climatiques de ces dernières décennies, marquées par de fortes irrégularités saisonnières et une baisse régulière de la pluviométrie. Aux aléas climatiques s'ajoute le problème de la fertilité des sols caractérisé le plus souvent par un faible taux de matières organiques : carence en phosphore et en azote, complexe absorbant insuffisant, petite capacité de rétention en eau, etc. Enfin, dans les régions à forte densité de population ( exemples du Ghana et du Togo ), le taux de croissance démographique élevé agit négativement sur le potentiel foncier, caractérisé par la dégradation des ressources naturelles. Les auteurs exposent ici les réalités de ces facteurs déterminants pour la sécurité alimentaire, afin de permettre aux décideurs de mieux les intégrer à leur politique de développement du secteur agricole.

L’exploitation minière en Afrique †“ Les communautés locales en tirent-elles parti ? examine comment l’exploitation aurifère à grande échelle dans trois pays †“ le Ghana, le Mali et la Tanzanie †“ affecte les moyens de subsistance et les communautés locales. L’analyse et les résultats des auteurs concluent qu’en moyenne, les communautés minières bénéficient d’avantages sociaux positifs bien que limités. L’étude définit trois grands canaux †“ marché, fiscal et environnemental †“ pouvant affecter les localités. Les auteurs appliquent ce cadre d’analyse à l’exploitation aurifère à grande échelle dans les trois pays de l’étude et ils utilisent des méthodes économétriques solides pour évaluer ces effets au niveau local. Si le défi de l’extraction des ressources naturelles est traité dans toutes ses dimensions, des pistes pour une prospérité partagée et une meilleure égalité peuvent être ouvertes, créant ainsi une vie meilleure pour les familles et améliorant les perspectives des pays dans lesquels elles vivent. Ce livre a pour objectif d’éclairer les politiques publiques et le comportement des entreprises concernant le bien-être des communautés situées à proximité des sites d’extraction et les opportunités que l’activité minière peut leur offrir.

Previous Congresses were held in Lyons in 1969, Exeter in 1972, and Karlsruhe in 1976. Attendance at Berkeley was about 1800 full and 500 associate members from about 90 countries; at least half of these come from outside of North America. About 450 persons participated in the program either as speakers or as presiders; approximately 40 percent of these came from the U.S. or Canada. There were four plenary addresses; they were delivered by Hans Freudenthal on major problems of mathematics education, Hermina Sinclair on the relationship between the learning of language and of mathematics, Seymour Papert on the computer as carrier of mathematical culture, and Hua Loo-Keng on popularising and applying mathematical methods. Gearge Polya was the honorary president of the Congress; illness prevented his planned attendence but he sent a brief presentation entitled, "Mathematics Improves the Mind". There was a full program of speakers, panelists, debates, miniconferences, and meetings of working and study groups. In addition, 18 major projects from around the world were invited to make presentations, and various groups representing special areas of concern had the opportunity to meet and to plan their future activities.
