Book Systematics Taxonomy and Biogeography of Sri Lankan Shrews Mammalia Soricidae

Download or read book Systematics Taxonomy and Biogeography of Sri Lankan Shrews Mammalia Soricidae written by Suyama Meegaskumbura and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite prolonged terrestrial connections to the mainland during successive glacial sea-level lowstands (most recently until c. 10,000 ybp), the biota of Sri Lanka's south-western 'wet zone' rainforests (rainfall > 2,000 mm yr-1) and the highland (>900m) montane forests show evidence of significant and prolonged isolation from both the island's dry zone and from peninsular India. Shrews of Sri Lanka also show high endemicity with five out of the nine currently recognized species being restricted to the island: Solisorex pearsoni, Feroculus feroculus (both monospecific genera), Crocidura miya, Suncus fellowesgordoni and Suncus zeylanicus. However, there is debate about the taxonomic status of some species, and the phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships of Sri Lankan shrews are unknown. Hence, I carried out a survey of shrews of Sri Lanka to determine their true diversity on the island, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeography. Morphological and molecular data were used. The study revealed that Solisorex is an old lineage that forms the sister group to all the other crocidurine taxa. In contrast, Feroculus is nested within species of Suncus. Analysis of divergence times suggests that Solisorex split from the ancestral Crocidurinae in the mid-Miocene at a similar time as Sylvisorex, Ruwenzorisorex and Scutisorex of Africa. This suggests a dispersal event from Africa to Sri Lanka in the mid-Miocene. In contrast, Feroculus appears to be much younger and to have originated in the early Pliocene. I also describe a new species of shrew from Sri Lanka, Crocidura hikmiya, which is restricted to the rainforest and mid montane forests of Southwestern Sri Lanka. Molecular data suggest that S. montanus of Sri Lanka may be a distinct species from S. montanus of India. Suncus murinus kandianus from the mid elevations of Sri Lanka is a possible hybrid of S. murinus and S. montanus. Furthermore, I confirm that S. fellowesgordoni of the highlands of Sri Lanka is a unique species which forms the sister species to S. etruscus, the widespread pigmy shrew. The analysis of biogeography shows that Sri Lanka's wet montane forests may have been important as centers of diversification. Sri Lanka's shrew fauna has a high degree of endemicity and hence should be conserved and managed as a global biodiversity hotspot.
