Book Systematic and Taxonomic Studies of Eschscholtzieae Papaveraceae

Download or read book Systematic and Taxonomic Studies of Eschscholtzieae Papaveraceae written by Shannon Michael Still and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribe Eschscholtzieae is a small group of 20 taxa in the angiosperm family Papaveraceae. The tribe composes three genera, Eschscholzia, Hunnemannia, and Dendromecon from Pacific and Southwest North America. Eschscholzia, the California poppies, are mostly annuals native to both mesic and xeric environments in the state of California and other parts of southwestern North America, including islands off the Pacific coast. Dendromecon, with two species of large shrubs, is native to chaparral regions in California and Baja California while Hunnemannia, with two species of annual or perennial subshrubs, is found in the Sonoran Desert of Mexico. The main objectives of this study are (1) to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships among the species of the three genera, specifically within the type genus Eschscholzia, (2) to examine the molecular and morphological relationships between the desert taxa of Eschscholzia that are commonly misidentified, and (3) to provide a taxonomic revision of the genus Eschscholzia. Nucleotide sequences from several chloroplast and nuclear DNA regions were analyzed using phylogenetic methods. One of the new regions, the nuclear DNA region 14-3-3-like, was new to the field of systematics and showed phylogenetic utility within the tribe. Results of the study indicated that each of the three genera is strongly supported as monophyletic. However, not all species of Eschscholzia displayed monophyly and several subspecies will be promoted to species. The subspecies for both Eschscholzia californica and Eschscholzia lemmonii will be promoted to specific status due to molecular and morphological paraphyly. Additionally, two new species of Eschscholzia, discovered during this work, are examined. Morphological and molecular analyses of six desert Eschscholzia reveal that each of the two putatively new species is supported as monophyletic and are closely related to Eschscholzia minutiflora and Eschscholzia parishii. Morphological analyses helps to identify morphological characters useful for distinguishing these six taxa and allows for the correct identification of the species. A thorough examination and revisions of the tribe's nomenclature reveals that 51 type species need lectotypification. In a revision of the genus Eschscholzia, I recognize 18 species. Two of these species are proposed new species, referenced here as Eschscholzia Y and Eschscholzia Z, and will be described in full in a later publication.

Book excerpt: "The book strikes a balance between classical fundamental information and the recent developments in plant systematics. Special attention has been devoted to the information on botanical nomenclature, identification and phylogeny of angiosperms with numerous relevant examples and detailed explanation of the important nomenclatural problems. An attempt has been made to present a continuity between orthodox and contemporary identification methods by working on a common example. The methods of identification using computers have been further explored to help better online identification. The chapter on cladistic methods has been totally revised, and molecular systematics discussed in considerable detail."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: The focus of the present edition has been to further consolidate the information on the principles of plant systematic, include detailed discussion on all major systems of classification, and significantly, also include discussion on the selected families of vascular plants, without sacrificing the discussion on basic principles. The families included for discussion are largely those which have wide representation, as also those that are less known but significant in evaluating the phylogeny of angiosperms. The discussion of the families also has a considerable focus on their phylogenetic relationships, as evidenced by recent cladistic studies, with liberal citation of molecular data. Several additional families have been included for detailed discussion in the present volume.

Book Molecular Systematics of Plants

Download or read book Molecular Systematics of Plants written by Pamela S. Soltis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of molecular techniques is rapidly transforming the study of plant systematics. The precision they offer enables researchers to classify plants that have not been subject to rigorous classification before and thus allows them to obtain a clearer picture of evolutionary relationships. Plant Molecular Systematics is arranged both conceptually and phylogenetically to accommodate the interests not only of general systematists, but also those of people interested in a particular plant family. The first part discusses molecular sequencing; the second reviews restriction site analysis and the sequencing of mitochondrial DNA. A third section details the analysis of ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA. The following section introduces model studies involving well-studied families such as the Onagraceae, Compositae and Leguminosae. The book concludes with a section addressing theoretical topics such as data analysis and the question of morphological vs. molecular data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone with a professional interest in the flora of Texas will welcome this checklist of the vascular plants. This comprehensive list also includes crops, persistent perennials, and naturalized plants and encompasses over 1,000 changes to the previous (Hatch, 1990) checklist. The authors have arranged this checklist phylogenetically by classes following the Cronquist system. Several features make this checklist especially useful. Chief among them is the relative synonymy (name history). An extensive index makes current classification and correct nomenclature readily accessible, while the botanical bibliography is the most extensive ever compiled for Texas. The authors also note which plants have been listed as threatened or endangered by the Texas Organization of Endangered Species, which are designated as Federal Noxious Weeds, and which have been chosen as state tree, flower, fruit, etc. by the Texas Legislature.
