Book excerpt: In this volume 268 species of the Larentinae are covered. Many of the genera have caused serious problems in identification, but based on the larger number of specimens illustrated on the 25 colour plates, the species can now be identified much more easily. In additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, differential characters are pointed out with arrows. As in the previously published volumes 1,2 and 4, maps with the European distribution are given with dots for verified specimens. There are photographs of male and female genitalia of all species and this volume also contains a systematic catalogue of the European species including those of the neighbouring regions of North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey and the Middle East. This is the first volume including genetic information from DNA barcoding which proved to be a useful, additional tool in identification, taxonomy and species delimitation.

Book Hydrophiloidea Staphylinoidea 2 vols

Download or read book Hydrophiloidea Staphylinoidea 2 vols written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 1730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life on this planet. It stems from innate human curiosity; confronted with an unknown species or object we ask "what is it?" Taxonomists recognize species and other systematic unities (the taxa), define them and place them within the framework of known organisms, providing the means for their subsequent identification. The Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (edited by I. & D. Löbl) gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all living things in the world's largest biogeographical area. It fixes nomenclature needed for unambiguous transfer of information, gives information about the occurrence of species and subspecies, and contains references that provide key information of over 40,000 systematic units. The work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds also to the urgent need of assessment of the still left forms of life, actually threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Contributors are: Robert B. Angus, Martin Fikáček, Elio Gentili, Manfred A. Jäch, Fenglong Jia, Tomáš Lackner, Ivan Löbl, Sławomir Mazur, Yusuke Minoshima, Alfred F. Newton, Michel Perreau, Alexander Prokin, Marek Przewoźny, Jan Rŭžička, Sergey K. Ryndevich, Michael Schülke, André Skale, Aleš Smetana, Mikael Sörensson. The publication of the work was supported by the Muséum de la Ville de Genève, Geneva, Switzerland.

Book excerpt: Microlepidoptera of Europe: Depressariidae is the tenth volume in this series, providing descriptions and illustrations which will enable identification of all 192 species. For preparation more than 10000 specimens have been studied, including East Palearctic species. Barcodes were taken from nearly 3000 specimens. As a result, 28 species were described as new to science, 22 of these present in Europe. For the first time in a guide to species identification in a family of European Microlepidoptera traditional taxonomy based on morphology is backed up by molecular evidence. The last revision of the family which covered all Europe was published in 1910.

Book excerpt: This volume merges all geographical and paleogeographical data on all groups of the arachnofauna. The book features topics such as the ecological factors, climate and other barriers that influence the distribution of arachnida. It also elaborates on the characteristics of the distribution such as arachnida at high altitude (e.g. Himalaya), in caves, in polar regions and highlights differences between the arachnofauna of e.g. Mediterranean regions vs Central Europe, West African vs Indomalayan and more. Furthermore, amongst other topics the volume also includes chapters on the systems of arachnida, fossil orders, dispersal and dispersion, endemics and relicts, regional arachnogeography, cave and high altitude arachnida.

Book excerpt: Flora of Madeira is the first book to describe fully all of the vascular plants of the Madeiran and Salvage Islands. It covers over 1360 species of native and naturalized plants, many of them little known. A high proportion of taxa, some 16%, are endemic to the islands themselves or are restricted to Macaronesia (the collective name for the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, Salvages, Canaries and Cape Verdes). Isolated from other land-masses, the Madeiran islands are botanically rich and diverse, and the rugged and beautiful landscape embraces a broad range of habitats. Madeira also contains the most extensive remaining areas of laurisilva, the evergreen forest which is the last representative of the ancient Tethyan forests of S. Europe and N. Africa. The remote Salvage Islands have a smaller but equally interesting flora. Flora provides descriptions and keys for taxa at all levels, as well as information on habitats, distributions and flowering times. Local names are also cited. Fifty-seven plates of original drawings illustrate 212 of the Madeiran and Macaronesian endemic taxa, some of them depicted for the first time. Introductory chapters describe the geography of the islands, the main vegetation types and the extensive measures being implemented to conserve this unique flora. Flora of Madeira is the only fully comprehensive publication on the wild flora of the Madeiran and Salvage Islands, for use as both a reference work and a field guide. This book is a digital reprint of ISBN 0-11-310017-5 (1994).

Book Index of Economically Important Lepidoptera

Download or read book Index of Economically Important Lepidoptera written by Bin-Cheng Zhang and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been derived from the Arthropod Name Index (ANI) database of CAB INTERNATIONAL. In its current form, the ANI database provides a checklist of about 95,000 names and synonyms, plus details of the position of each species within the hierarchy of arthropod classification. To generate this volume, information for the major Lepidoptera on common names, geographical distribution, host range and status of the recorded pest or beneficial species, has been added. It includes records of about 6,000 species (plus another 6,000 synonyms) of harmful and beneficial Lepidoptera that have been recorded in scientific publications over the past 80 years and abstracted for inclusion in Review of Agricultural Entomology and its predecessors. Most species listed are pests as a result of their larvae feeding on plants, but beneficial species such as the silk moths and species of current or potential use in biological control as predators of mealybugs, scale insects and other pests and weeds, are also included. The host plants listed and information on geographical distribution nevertheless emphasise the insects' importance in crop production. The book is thus an essential reference for agricultural entomologists.

Book Insect Conservation

  • Author : Michael J Samways
  • Publisher : CABI
  • Release : 2019-12-02
  • ISBN : 1789241685
  • Pages : 559 pages

Download or read book Insect Conservation written by Michael J Samways and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects do not live in isolation. They interact with the abiotic environment and are major components of the terrestrial and freshwater biotic milieus. They are crucial to so many ecosystem processes and are the warp and weft of all terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems that are not permanently frozen. This means that insect conservation is a two-way process: insects as the subjects of conservation, while also they are useful tools for conserving the environment. This book overviews strategic ways forward for insect conservation. It is a general view of what has worked and what has not for the maintenance of insect diversity across the world, as well as what might be the right approaches for the future.
