Book A Foretaste of Heaven

Download or read book A Foretaste of Heaven written by Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the critical approach of the New Historicism and the sociological insights of Ernst Troeltsch, this study addresses the complicated issue of how the German Romantic poet, Friedrich Hölderlin, shifts religious vocabulary to the aesthetic realm, by examining his relationship to pietist groups in his native Württemberg. The study is divided into three sections: 1) a literature review and methodological statement; 2) overview of the spectrum of positions represented within Württemberg pietism, and a discussion of three pietists known to have had contact with Hölderlin in his youth and as a student; 3) analysis of a representative selection of Hölderlin's works - including his early poems, Hyperion, his theoretical writings on aesthetics, and a number of his late hymns - in light of their relation to Württemberg pietism.

Book Revelation and Reason

    Book Details:
  • Author : Colin E. Gunton
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2008-11-20
  • ISBN : 0567350460
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Revelation and Reason written by Colin E. Gunton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Gunton was a world renowned scholar, systematic theologian and Reformed Church minister. Revelation and Reason is an in-depth analysis, derived from the annual lecture/seminar course he gave to MA students at King's College London. Approximately one-third of the work is a direct transcript, and analysis of the three two-hour lectures Colin Gunton gave at a break-neck speed: 1. 'From Reason and Revelation to Revelation And Reason'; 2. 'The Modern Problem in an Historical Context'; 3. 'Aspects of Karl Barth on Faith And Reason'. These lectures were a history, analysis and critique of Revelation and Reason in Systematic Theology and Philosophy, culminating with Karl Barth. The remainder is a transcript of the unrehearsed, unscripted, extemporary responses Colin Gunton gave to MA student's papers on set topics in the Revelation and Reason course, seamlessly integrated, where relevant, with detail from the main three lectures. Colin was a creative lecturer and widely read theologian and philosopher. These extemporary responses show the breadth of his learning, and his genius spontaneously to bring to mind relevant ideas from a wealth of theologians and philosophers, whilst incisively and piercingly exposing the flaws as well as the strengths under consideration. From this wealth of reading, Colin gave space to the free rein of his mind particularly when fielding questions or trying to analyze a particular strand of a theologian's thought. Revelation and Reason is a complementary volume to Colin Gunton's posthumously published The Barth Lectures (Continuum 2007) and to the first volume of his unfinished Systematic Theology, also forthcoming from T&T Clark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of God's general revelation has in our day aroused agitated and even violent discussions, and the time when Reformed theology could take the distinction between general and special revelation for granted appears to be gone forever, according to the author. Does the distinction between general and special revelation do justice to the unique and "once-for-all" character of the redemptive revelation in Jesus Christ? Does the confession of a general or universal revelation owe its existence to a flight, perhaps unconscious, from the sufficiency and absoluteness of the revelation in Christ? And is Christ to be regarded as but a special illustration of the general revelation of God in the world, a revelation richer and broader than simply that revelation in Christ? These decisive questions, involving as they do the claims of natural theology and the radical character of the history of religion since the nineteenth century, are given here a trenchant and detailed analysis.

Book Revelation Reason and Reality

Download or read book Revelation Reason and Reality written by Joris Geldhof and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the relationship between modernity and Christianity. The author argues that the notion of revelation is eminently reasonable and indissolubly connected with being and reality. He takes Jaspers' philosophy of religion as representative of the 'classical' modern critique and gives it its due. He then takes a step backward, so to speak, and by means of a consideration of the history of ideas, seeks to rehabilitate the Christian understanding of revelation. To do this, he draws upon Schelling's remarkable philosophy of revelation and Baader's much less familiar speculative dogmatics. However, this study is much more than a profound philosophical and theological account of the thought of Jaspers, Schelling and Baader. It is above all an eloquent defence of the plausibility and intelligibility of what Christians have always believed. In fact, the author makes a compelling case for the claim that revelation is 'that without which Christianity cannot be thought'.

God and religion evolved from the early fear of nature and nature worship to monotheism.Put together Religion is just superstition carried over. There is no God and God do not reveal himself to man.I was directly in the midst of this revolution. Until you yourself experience miracles which cannot be explained away as just chance event. The proof of the pudding is in eating it. Judeao Christian claim is that God indeed revealed Himself to the patriarchs and finally as YHVH in the Burning Bush to Moses. Moses was selected to bring this revelation and give it to an elect for all mankind. In the fulness of time the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Thus it was not a cock and bull story made up by the seventh century BC Priests and clever guys. Have we got evidence? This book is about that.
