Book Synthesis of Polymers Expected to Have Superconducting Properties

Download or read book Synthesis of Polymers Expected to Have Superconducting Properties written by J. H. Hodgkin and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research program was the synthesis and evaluation of organic polymers which on theoretical grounds might exhibit superconducting properties at or near room temperature. The report discusses research on the synthesis of a conjugated polymer chain that could be adequately characterized, and then on the attachment of dye molecules, as close as possible to this chain, without allowing cross conjugation. One approach was the synthesis and characterization of Schiffbase polymers with side-chain dye molecules. Considerable effort was devoted to the preparation of low molecular weight model compounds to define reaction conditions necessary for high polymer formation and to provide complete electronic spectra for the computational program. However, when efforts were made to combine the dye molecules and conjugated polymers, steric hindrance prevented the synthesis of the proposed polymers. In a second approach, efforts were made to avoid the problem of steric hindrance by synthesizing modified Schiff-base polymers from 2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone and various substituted diamines. Polymers were prepared with and without attached dye groups and also as metal complexes; however, electrical testing of these materials indicated that they were insulators. Another approach included the synthesis of a conjugated spine of dehydrogenated poly-9-vinylanthracene with dye precursors attached through chloromethyl groups on the anthracene units. Electrical testing indicated that they were insulators. The final approach tried was the use of poly-4-chloropyridine as the conjugated chain and again the attachment of the dye precursor via a chloromethyl group. (Author).

Download or read book Beyond the Molecular Frontier written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and chemical engineering have changed significantly in the last decade. They have broadened their scopeâ€"into biology, nanotechnology, materials science, computation, and advanced methods of process systems engineering and controlâ€"so much that the programs in most chemistry and chemical engineering departments now barely resemble the classical notion of chemistry. Beyond the Molecular Frontier brings together research, discovery, and invention across the entire spectrum of the chemical sciencesâ€"from fundamental, molecular-level chemistry to large-scale chemical processing technology. This reflects the way the field has evolved, the synergy at universities between research and education in chemistry and chemical engineering, and the way chemists and chemical engineers work together in industry. The astonishing developments in science and engineering during the 20th century have made it possible to dream of new goals that might previously have been considered unthinkable. This book identifies the key opportunities and challenges for the chemical sciences, from basic research to societal needs and from terrorism defense to environmental protection, and it looks at the ways in which chemists and chemical engineers can work together to contribute to an improved future.

Book New Polymeric Materials Expected to Have Superior Properties for Space Based Use

Download or read book New Polymeric Materials Expected to Have Superior Properties for Space Based Use written by D. B. Cotts and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of electrically conducting, semiconducting and semiinsulating polymers were surveyed and their conduction mechanism, mechanical properties, and suitability for spacebased use evaluated. Correlations between molecular structure, conductivity, and mechanical properties were drawn, and a comprehensive model of electrical conductivity in organic polymers was formulated. Although the most widely studied electrically conducting polymers are not robust enough for most space-based uses, several commercial materials, including pyrolyzed Kapton and polyvinyl carbazole, appear to have the necessary combination of electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The main obstacle to the selection of new or modified materials for spacecraft use is the lack of strength, thermal stability, and radiation resistance--not their conductivity. Several synthesis procedures are identified that would raise the value of these properties to acceptable levels for materials that have the required electrical properties. The wide range of data reported in the literature can be reconciled by a theory of conductivity in which the limiting feature is the rate at which electrons are transferred between localized charges states. Some of the new polymers identified by this model have been prepared. They possess relatively high electrical conductivities and, unlike the majority of electrically conducting polymers, are processable in organic solvents.

Download or read book Semiconducting Polymers written by Taylor & Francis Group and published by Apple Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Semiconducting polymers are of great interest for applications in electroluminescent devices, solar cells, batteries, and diodes. This volume, Semiconducting Polymers: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties, provides a thorough introduction to the basic concepts of the photophysics of semiconducting polymers, as well as a description of the principal polymerization methods for luminescent polymers. Divided into two main sections, the book first introduces the advances made in polymer synthesis, and then goes on to focus on the photophysics aspects, also exploring how new advances in the area of controlled syntheses of semiconducting polymers are applied. An understanding of the photophysics process in this kind of material requires some knowledge of many different terms in this field, so a chapter on the basic aspects is included. The process that occurs in semiconducting polymers spans time scales that are unimaginably fast, sometimes less than a picosecond. To appreciate this extraordinary scale, it is necessary to learn a range of vocabularies and concepts that stretch from the basic concepts of photophysics to modern applications, such as electroluminescent devices, solar cells, batteries, and diodes. This book provides a starting point for a broadly based understanding of photophysics concepts applied in understanding semiconducting polymers, incorporating critical ideas from across the scientific spectrum. The book is intended for graduate students in a range of disciplines. It will also prove valuable for faculty and instructors, and scientists and researchers in chemistry, physics, and engineering"--

Book SYNTHESIS OF CONJUGATED POLYMERS VIA RANDOM COPOLYMERIZATION TO INVESTIGATE THERMAL PROPERTIES

Download or read book SYNTHESIS OF CONJUGATED POLYMERS VIA RANDOM COPOLYMERIZATION TO INVESTIGATE THERMAL PROPERTIES written by Michael Gill and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utility of conjugated polymers stems from their wide uses in organic photovoltaics, organic field-effect transistors, and organic light-emitting diodes. One of the advantages of conjugated polymers over traditional silicon-based electronics is their chemical tunability. Conjugated polymers can be customized to have desirable properties based on their intended application. These polymers have been studied to understand how changes to their structure affect electronic properties, including analysis of their glass transition and melting transition; however, these models have not been extensively studied. In this study, two polymers, Poly-((2,5- dihexylphenylene)-1,4-diyl-alt-[4,7-bis(thiophen-5-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole]-2,2"-diyl) (PPTBT) and Poly-((9,9-bis(2-octyl)-fluorene-2,7-diyl)-alt-(4,7-di(thiophene-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-5,5-diyl) (PFTBT) were synthesized with varying concentrations of 4,7-bis(5-bromo-4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (T6BT). This was done to analyze how the random addition of T6BT affects the physical macroscopic properties of the polymers including crystallinity and the phase transition temperatures. Addition of T6BT was expected to improve the solubility of the polymer during processing with minimal impact on thermal properties. Thermal analysis was conducted using Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Poly-((2,5-dihexylphenylene)-1,4-diyl-alt-[4,7-bis(3-hexylthiophen-5-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole]-2,2-diyl) or PPT6BT demonstrated a liquid crystallinity with a nematic to isotropic transition at 146C while no other polymers demonstrated substantial crystallinity or liquid crystalline properties.
