Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials with tailored properties are regarded as a fundamental element in the development of future science and technology. Research is still ongoing into the nanosized construction elements required to create functional solids. The recently developed technique, nanocasting, has great advantage over others in terms of the synthesis of special nanostructured materials by the careful choice of suitable elements and nanoengineering steps. This new book summarizes the recent developments in nanocasting, including the principles of nanocasting, syntheses of novel nanostructured materials, characterization methods, detailed synthetic recipes and further possible development in this area. The book focuses on the synthesis of porous solids from the viewpoint of methodology and introduces the science of nanocasting from fundamental principles to their use in synthesis of various materials. It starts by outlining the principles of nanocasting, requirements to the templates and precursors and the tools needed to probe matter at the nanoscale level. It describes how to synthesize nano structured porous solids with defined characteristics and finally discusses the functionalization and application of porous solids. Special attention is given to new developments in this field and future perspectives. A useful appendix covering the detailed synthetic recipes of various templates including porous silica, porous carbon and colloidal spheres is included which will be invaluable to researchers wanting to follow and reproduce nanocast materials. Topics covered in the book include: * inorganic chemistry * organic chemistry * solution chemistry * sol-gel and interface science * acid-base equilibria * electrochemistry * biochemistry * confined synthesis The book gives readers not only an overview of nanocasting technology, but also sufficient information and knowledge for those wanting to prepare various nanostructured materials without needing to search the available literature.

Book Design and Synthesis of Crystalline Metal Oxide Sulfide Based Mesoporous Materials

Download or read book Design and Synthesis of Crystalline Metal Oxide Sulfide Based Mesoporous Materials written by Lei Jin and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesoporous materials process many unique properties, such as high surface area and large pore volume, which are important in the applications of catalysis and energy storage. In these applications, mesoporous materials with controllable porosity and crystallinity are critical. However, the synthesis of mesoporous materials with crystallinity is challenging using traditional methods due to the disruption of mesoporosity at high temperatures. Therefore, a novel synthetic strategy is needed. In this thesis, the design and general synthesis of mesoporous materials with controllable mesoporosity and crystallinity were reported. The mesoporous materials include oxides, sulfides, and metal oxides-based hybrid materials. Furthermore, their porosity-correlated properties and applications in catalysis and energy storage devices are discussed in each chapter. The first chapter involves the synthesis of mesoporous complex oxides with high crystallinity by colloidal-amphiphile-micelle (CAM) templates. Organosilane-containing CAM templates can convert into thermally stable silica that prevents the overgrowth of crystalline grains and the collapse of the mesoporosity of oxides at high temperatures. This method is general and applicable to various complex oxides with mesoporosity and crystallinity. Furthermore, the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of mesoporous cobalt titanate is studied to understand the correlation between mesoscale porosity and electromagnetic properties. Following that, the thermally stable titania confined metal nanoparticles (Au, Pd, and PdAu) are designed and synthesized by the co-assembly of polymer-tethered metal nanoparticles and CAM templates. On one hand, the high-temperature synthesis of mesoporous Au and TiO2 hybrids has been developed. Well-defined nanostructures of Au and porous structures of TiO2 can be retained while improving the crystallinity of TiO2 and its strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs). Under thermal annealing, oxidative SMSIs found in Au-TiO2 show great impact on their photocatalytic activity. On the other hand, using bimetallic PdAu, the impact of oxide support has been studied in term of their hydrogenation activity and selectivity. The last chapter describes the synthesis of mesoporous metal sulfides through a facile solid-state synthesis. Metal sulfides, such as cobalt sulfides, nickel sulfides, and their binary sulfides, are synthesized. The sulfides are used as electrode materials in supercapacitors. The mesoporosity and the synergistic effect of binary sulfides show great impact on the supercapacitive performance.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Oxide Catalysts for Environmental and Energy Storage Applications

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Oxide Catalysts for Environmental and Energy Storage Applications written by Wenqiao Song and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, environmental concerns and the global energy crisis have become two of our greatest challenges. The main purpose of this dissertation research is to design highly active mesoporous materials that can efficiently catalyze environmental and energy related reactions. Surface properties can be easily tuned by thermal treatment and cation doping, resulting in improved catalytic activities. Synthesis and characterization of the materials, catalytic activities for carbon monoxide oxidation, oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions, and mechanistic studies are covered in this thesis. The first part describes the synthesis of mesoporous cobalt oxides through an inverse micelle route for low temperature carbon monoxide oxidation applications. The prepared material showed much better activity and stability compared with commercial cobalt oxide due to its nanoparticle nature and porous structure. The catalytic performance under both dry and moisture rich conditions were tested. Detailed characterization of the materials suggested that high surface areas and the presence of surface oxygen vacancies were critical for enhanced activities. In real systems, structured catalysts such as monolithic substrates coated with a layer of active material are used instead of powder form catalysts. To evaluate the potential of our catalysts to be used in practical catalytic devices, mesoporous metal oxides (MnOx, Co3O4, CeO2) were coated on cordierite substrate by dip coating and in-situ growth and were used as low temperature diesel oxidation catalysts. The resulting materials showed promising catalytic performance. The effect of particle size, loading amount and Cu doping on the catalytic performance are discussed in detail. In the last part, mesoporous cobalt oxides were used as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. If a catalyst can catalyze both reactions, it will have great potential in the application of rechargeable metal air batteries. Ni and Mn doping were introduced into the cobalt oxide material to increase the conductivity and active site population. The Ni incorporated cobalt oxide exhibited the best activity, which can be considered as a potential substituent for precious metal catalysts (Pt, Ir, Ru). Furthermore, the intrinsic structure-property relationships of the materials were established.
