Book Synthesis characterization and applications of nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis

Download or read book Synthesis characterization and applications of nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis written by Shamaila Sajjad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, East China University of Science and Technology (-), language: English, abstract: Considerable effort has been made to design, fabricate, and manipulate nanostructured materials by innovative approaches. The precise control of nanoscale structures will pave the way not only for elucidating unique size/shape dependent physicochemical properties but also for realizing new applications in science and technology. Nanotechnology offers unprecedented opportunities for improving our daily lives and the environment in which we live. This thesis mainly describes recent progress in the design, fabrication, and modification of nanostructured semiconductor materials for environmental applications. The scope of this thesis covers TiO2, Bi2O3 and BiOCl materials, focusing particularly on TiO2-based nanostructures (e.g., pure, doped, coupled, mesoporous, hierarchically porous, and ordered mesoporous TiO2). Mesoporous titania is of particular interest since this class of materials possesses well-defined porosity and large specific surface areas. For photocatalytic degradation of organics, these desirable properties are anticipated to improve the efficiency. So in the first part of work, I have synthesized the mesoporous titania by using poly ethylene glycol as a template in dilute acetic acid aqueous solution by hydrothermal process and investigated the effect of PEG molecular weights and thermal treatment on the resultant structure and photocatalytic activity. When the molecular weights of PEG vary from 600 to 20,000, the particle sizes of mesoporous-TiO2 structure decrease from 15.1 to 13.3 nm and mean pore sizes increase from 6.9-10.6 nm. The activities of these mesoporous-TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by using PEG are evaluated and compared with Degussa P-25 using chloro-phenol as a testing compound. [...]

Book Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

Download or read book Heterogeneous Photocatalysis written by Mario J. Muñoz-Batista and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field. The chapter "Mechanochemical Forces as a Synthetic Tool for Zero and One-Dimensional Titanium Oxide-Based Nano-photocatalysts" is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 License via link.springer.com.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of New Modified Photocatalysts for Environmental and Energy Applications

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of New Modified Photocatalysts for Environmental and Energy Applications written by Ana Laura Luna Barron and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, environment pollution and energy crisis are widely concerned all over the world. It is an urgent task to develop environment-friendly technologies for alternative clean energies. Photocatalysis is one of the most promising methods for such subjects. The most used semiconductor in photocatalysis is TiO2 due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, high availability and low cost. The modification of TiO2 with metal nanoparticles has demonstrated have a beneficial effect in the photocatalytic activity of TiO2.Identifying the factors that govern the kinetics of the photocatalytic processes and understanding the role that metal nanoparticles play is inherent to achieve the desired goal of developing more efficient photocatalytic systems.Although great strides have been made in the study of the effect of surface modification of TiO2 with mono- and bimetallic NPs on its photocatalytic activity, a lot still remains unknown. Most of the investigations have been based on the study of kinetics or mechanisms involved in photocatalysis. There are few reported studies, which integrate the absorption, dynamics of charge carriers and photocatalytic activity. The later has motivated the development of the present work, having the main objective to study systematically the effect of metal NPs on titania surface in the three principals steps of the photocatalytic processes: (1) absorption of light (generation of electron-hole pair), (2) dynamic of charge carriers, and (3) efficiency of the photocatalytic activity.

Book Development of Highly Porous Crystalline Titania Photocatalysts

Download or read book Development of Highly Porous Crystalline Titania Photocatalysts written by Michał Marszewski and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this dissertation are the design, synthesis, and characterization of titania materials with surface area, porosity, crystallinity and doping tailored toward photocatalytic applications. Ultimately, the research should result in a strategy allowing the synthesis of titania with all these important features. The synthetic methods investigated in this research will include: i) soft-templating, ii) hard-templating, and iii) modified precursor strategy. Soft-templating strategy uses organic templates--either block copolymers or surfactants--that under specific conditions assemble into micelles, and later, these micelles are used to template the desired material around them. The resulting organic-inorganic composite is then calcined in air to remove the organic template and recover the final material with high surface area and large pore volume. This work explores 1) synthesis of titania materials in the presence of polymer templates, and the effects of different synthetic conditions on the structure of the resulting materials. Hard-templating, in contrast to soft-templating, uses inorganic templates. The hard template is introduced during the synthesis to cast its shape onto the fabricated material and removed afterwards, when the material has formed. The final material is an inverse replica of the hard template used, typically with a well-developed mesostructure. This work explores 1) hard templating synthesis of titania materials using silica and alumina, and 2) the effects of the template amount and type. The modified precursor strategy is a novel synthetic method, developed in this research, and designed specifically to achieve titania material with high surface area, large pore volume, high crystallinity, and possibly doping. The modified precursors are prepared by reacting generic titania precursors, such as titanium isopropoxide (TIPO), with organic acids, which results in substitution of some or all alkoxide groups in TIPO structure. The goal is to introduce new, easily carbonizable groups in TIPO structure so that the modified precursor can serve as titania and carbon precursor simultaneously. Subsequently, during carbonization in inert atmosphere, a carbon framework is formed that works as a scaffold, protecting titania during its crystallization. Afterwards, the carbon scaffold is removed by calcination in air. This work explores the modified precursor strategy by 1) preparing titania materials from TIPO modified with different carboxylic acids and 2) investigating the effect of the modifying acid on the properties of the carbon-titania composites and the final titania materials.
