Book Synthesis and Characterization of Conducting Polymers with New Architectural Motifs

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Conducting Polymers with New Architectural Motifs written by Paul David Byrne and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The synthetic scheme was also utilized to produce a monomer that could be electrochemically cross-linked in a controlled fashion. In chapter four, a variety of polythiophene derivatives that incorporated azaferrocenes complexes into the main polymer chain were synthesized. These polymers were then used to ascertain the effect of a n-bound metal on the main chain of a conducting polymer. The oxidation of the metal centers in the polymer produced a significant change in the conductivity of the polymer film. Changing the length and oxidation potential of the polythiophene section of the monomer appeared to alter the charge delocalization of the polymers. In chapter five, a series of polythiophene derivatives containing cyclobutadiene cobalt cyclopentadiene complexes in the main polymer chain were synthesized. The viability of the electropolymerization of the complexes was determined by the relative position of organic section's oxidation potential versus the oxidation of the metal centers. The metal coordinated cyclobutadiene ring of the complex appeared to have a modest charge transport ability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who recognize that our modern life style is dependent, to a large extent, on the use of organic polymers as thermal and elec trical insulators, may be surprised to learn that specific plastics may also be used as conductors of electricity. In addition to demon strating the versatility of polymers, this use as conductors will lead to developments which were not possible with other available materials of construction. This is a new field which is growing rapidly because of intensive research and developmental efforts by many different industrial, governmental and university investigators. Many of these researchers reported advances in this art at a symposium on conductive polymers sponsored by the American Chemical Society's Division of Organic Coatings and Plastics Chemistry held at the Second Chemical Congress of the North American Continent at Las Vegas, in August 1980. The proceedings of this timely symposium are presented in this book. The editor wishes to take this opportunity to express his grati tude to the authors who contributed to this book and to the ACS Organic Coatings and Plastics Division for sponsoring this effort. Book Design Synthesis and Characterization of Self assembling Conjugated Polymers for Use in Organic Electronic Applications

Download or read book Design Synthesis and Characterization of Self assembling Conjugated Polymers for Use in Organic Electronic Applications written by Kathy Beckner Woody and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers comprise some of the most promising materials for new technologies such as organic field effect transistors, solar light harvesting technology and sensing devices. In spite of tremendous research initiatives in materials chemistry, the potential to optimize device performance and develop new technologies is remarkable. Understanding relationships between the structure of conjugated polymers and their electronic properties is critical to improving device performance. The design and synthesis of new materials which self-organize into ordered nanostructures creates opportunities to establish relationships between electronic properties and morphology or molecular packing. This thesis details our progress in the development of synthetic routes which provide access to new classes of conjugated polymers that contain dissimilar side chains that segregate or dissimilar conjugated blocks which phase separate, and summarizes our initial attempts to characterize these materials. Poly(1,4-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) have been used in a variety of organic electronic applications, most notably as fluorescent sensors. Using traditional synthetic methods, asymmetrically disubstituted PPEs have irregular placement of side chains on the conjugated backbone. Herein, we establish the first synthetic route to an asymmetrically substituted regioregular PPEs. The initial PPEs in this study have different lengths of alkoxy side chains, and both regioregular and regiorandom analogs are synthesized and characterized for comparison. The design of amphiphilic structures provides additional opportunities for side chains to influence the molecular packing and electronic properties of conjugated polymers. A new class of regioregular, amphiphilic PPEs has been prepared bearing alkoxy and semifluoroalkoxy side chains, which have a tendency to phase separate. Fully conjugated block copolymers can provide access to interesting new morphologies as a result of phase separation of the conjugated blocks. In particular, donor-acceptor block copolymers that phase separate into electron rich and electron poor domains may be advantageous in organic electronic devices such as bulk heterojunction solar cells, of which the performance relies on precise control of the interface between electron donating and accepting materials. The availability of donor-acceptor block copolymers is limited, largely due to the challenges associated with synthesizing these materials. In this thesis, two new synthetic routes to donor-acceptor block copolymers are established. These methods both utilize the catalyst transfer condensation polymerization, which proceeds by a chain growth mechanism. The first example entails the synthesis of a monofunctionalized, telechelic poly(3-alkylthiophene) which can be coupled to electron accepting polymers in a subsequent reaction. The other method describes the first example of a one-pot synthesis of a donor-acceptor diblock copolymer. The methods of synthesis are described, and characterization of the block copolymers is reported.

Abstract: A series of copolymers based on poly(phenylene thienylene) mainchain that contains pendent bisterpyridine ruthenium(II) complexes was synthesized by palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The polymers contain different proportion of metal complexes. The copolymers exhibit broad absorption band in the visible region due to the conjugated backbone and the bisterpyridine ruthenium complexes. The relative intensity of each absorption band depends on the metal complex contents. There is a significant spectral overlap between the emission of the conjugated polymer mainchain and the absorption of the ruthenium complexes. It was found that there is a quenching of polymer emission by the complexes. Based on the results obtained by spectroscopic studies, it is proposed to be Forster type energy transfer process between the polymer mainchain as the donor and the complexes as the acceptors. Two donor-acceptor molecules with pyrazinopyrazine bridge units were synthesized. They exhibit intramolecular charge transfer character and were characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR, UV-visible absorption and mass spectrometry. The two compounds have absorption band in the near IR region and exhibit narrow band gap. Through structural modification, their optical and electronic properties can be fine tuned. They have potential applications in organic photovoltaic cells and organic field effect transistors. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5351043 Subjects: Conjugated polymers
