Book Amorphous and Liquid Semiconductors

Download or read book Amorphous and Liquid Semiconductors written by J. Tauc and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid state physics after solving so successfully many fundamental problems in perfect or slightly imperfect crystals, tried in recent years to attack problems associated with large disorder with the aim to understand the consequences of the lack of the long-range order. Semiconductors are much more changed by disorder than metals or insulators, and appear to be the most suitable materials for fundamental work. Considerable exploratory work on amorphous and liquid semiconductors was done by the Leningrad School since the early fifties. In recent years, much research in several countries was directed to deepen the understanding of the structural, electronic, optical, vibrational, magnetic and other proper ties of these materials and to possibly approach the present level of under standing of crystalline semiconductors. This effort was stimulated not only by purely scientific interest but also by the possibility of new applications from which memory devices in the general sense are perhaps the most challenging. The research met with serious difficulties which are absent in crystals.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Doped Core shell Quantum Dots

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Doped Core shell Quantum Dots written by Elizabeth J. Sodt and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of the research performed is the systematic modification of the optical properties of quantum dots by the formation of a shell of another quantum dot of a different band gap energy. Core/shell quantum dots such as CdS:Mn/CdS. CdS:Mn/ZnS, and ZnS:Mn/CdS with various concentrations of dopant Mn2 in the core and shell concentrations have been synthesized under mild conditions in the aqueous phase using stoichiometric amounts of the surfactant stabilizer dodecyl sulfate. These quantum dots exhibit UV-vis, emission, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectral behavior that is dependent on the concentration of the shell and the dopant Mn2 in the core. The emission intensities of the core quantum dots do exhibit a systematic variation with Mn2 concentration. When a shell is added a systematic variation in the emission intensity and lifetime that are inversely proportional to the concentration of the shell is observed. When the large band gap ZnS is added as a shell to the small band gap CdS, the Mn2+ ions migrate from the core to the shell which is manifested in the emission and EPR spectra. Additionally the mixing of the valence and conduction band energy states of the large and small band gap shell and core respectively is also manifested in the emission spectra. In the reverse case, namely when CdS is added as a shell to ZnS the migration is not observed and the mixing of the valence and conduction band energy levels is minimum. The tunable optical properties of these core/shell quantum dots make them excellent platforms for the generation of nanosensors for nerve gas analogs.

Book Van Der Waals Quantum Dots

Download or read book Van Der Waals Quantum Dots written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) have gained increasing attention for their versatile fluorescent, optoelectronic, chemical, and biochemical properties. During the past few years, significant progress has been demonstrated, started from theoretical modeling to actual application. Many interesting properties and applications have been reported, such as excitation-dependent emission (and in some cases, non-excitation dependent), chemical functionalization, bioimaging, phototherapy, photocatalysis, chemical, and biological sensing. An overview of these early-stage research development of BNQDs will be discussed in this dissertation. Next, the origin of excitation-dependent fluorescence from BNQDs synthesized in an organic solvent is explored and explained with the support of theoretical modeling. Also, we have developed a series of calibration plots by using UV-Vis and fluorescent spectroscopy for the quantification of BNQDs. We demonstrated that these calibration plots are more than 90% accurate for estimating the concentration of BNQDs in solutions. Finally, the use of van der Waals QDs including BNQDs and MoS2 in thin films solar cells is explored. Our ZnO-based solar cell devices allow us to obtain a record high efficiency of 14.7% using commercial CdSe/ZnS QDs. Preliminary photovoltaic data based on van der Waals QDs will be discussed.
