Book Preparation and Characterization of Manganese based and Carbon based Nanomaterials for Supercapasitors Application

Download or read book Preparation and Characterization of Manganese based and Carbon based Nanomaterials for Supercapasitors Application written by Gomma Abdelgawad Mohammed Ali and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, electrochemical materials, namely MnO2, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), porous carbon nanoparticles (PCNs), and rGO/MnO2 nanocomposite, were prepared in diverse morphologies such as nanoflowers (MnO2), nanosheets (rGO), and nanoparticles (carbon). Different physical and chemical characterizations have been conducted to study the structural and morphological properties of the materials under study. Electrochemical properties of the above materials have been studied comprehensively using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (CDC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in order to evaluate their suitability as an electrode for supercapacitive energy storage. MnO2 nanoflowers was recovered from spent batteries by a combining leaching and electrowinning techniques. The recovered MnO2 nanoflowers exhibited high specific capacitance (Cs) (303 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1). Furthermore, MnO2 was electrodeposited by potentiostatic and galvanostatic conditions. Under similar electrodeposition conditions, MnO2 deposited by galvanostatic condition showed smaller particle size, less compact layered structure and wider band gap compared to potentiostatic deposition. The galvanostatic MnO2 rendered facile ions diffusion, low resistances and showed superior capacitive behavior. The rGO nanosheets were prepared by hydrazine reduction of graphene oxide and their electrochemical properties were studied. The rGO showed high Cs of 191 and 168 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1, in 5 M KOH and 1 M Na2SO4, respectively and high cycling stability > 96 % over 1000 cycles. In addition, PCNs with fine particles size of 35 nm were prepared from oil palm leaves using a catalyst free process. The Cs of PCNs is 245 and 213 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1 in 5 M KOH and 1 M Na2SO4, respectively. The PCNs showed high cycling stability of 95 %. Practical supercapacitors were developed using rGO and PCNs; the devices delivered energy densities ~18 and ~25 W h kg-1 at power densities 340 and 360 W kg-1, respectively, under wider operating voltage window of 2 V in neutral electrolyte. rGO/MnO2 nanocomposite has been prepared by simultaneous electrochemical conversion of GO and Mn3O4. The Cs of rGO/MnO2 is 457 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1, which are several folds higher compared to those for pure rGO and MnO2. Furthermore, rGO/MnO2 showed high stability of 95 % over 2000 CDC cycles. Therefore, the present study identifies electrochemical materials with improved energy storage capabilities.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Applications of Nano functional Transition Metal Oxides Materials and Graphite Anode Modified by Cvd Carbon Coating

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Applications of Nano functional Transition Metal Oxides Materials and Graphite Anode Modified by Cvd Carbon Coating written by Yunshuang Ding and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research consists of two major sections. The first section of this research is focused on developing novel synthesis methods, characterization, and catalytic applications of multi-functional transition metal oxides including manganese oxide nano-materials (2x2 tunel structured manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve), 3D hierarchical nano-architecture -MnO2 and cobalt oxides, and cobalt based materials. Manganese oxide octahedral molecula sieves (OMS) have ID open framework structures with various theoretical nano-scale tunnel size materials have been investigated extensively as low cost and environmentally benign ionic and molecular sieves and efficient redox catalysts. A novel and efficient solvent-free method has been developed to synthesize manganese oxides with 2 x 2 tunnel structures. The properties of the synthesized OMS-2 materilas have been compared with that synthesized by conventional reflux and hydrothermal methods. Epsilon manganese dioxides with controlled novel 3D architectures have been fabricated via a hydrothermal chemical reaction. The effects of reaction time and reaction temperature on the morphology of the final -MnO2 are investigated, and the formation mechanisms of the hierarchical nano-architectures are proposed. The magnetic properties of -MnO2 are also studied. Resides manganese oxides, a microwave-heating reflux route has been used to synthesize 3D flower like cobalt hydrotalcite-like compounds with layered structure and these compounds can be transferred into spinel structure of Co3O 4. Both materials show the electrocatalytic activity and stability for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen. Therefore these materials have the potential to be electrocatyltic catalysts. The second section of the research is to study the microstructure of carbon films coated on the iron and graphite particles by a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method and the relationship between the microstructure of the carbon coatings and their effects on electrochemical properties.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Pseudo capacitive Performance of Manganese Oxide Nanostructures

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Pseudo capacitive Performance of Manganese Oxide Nanostructures written by Chung-Ying Tsai and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, manganese oxide based nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel process. Methanol, ethanol, and propanol were used as alternative solvents during sol-gel process with manganese acetate as precursor for the preparation of pristine manganese oxide. Hybrid manganese oxide modified by additions of carbon nanotubes was further prepared. The effects of different solutions and heat treatment temperatures on the morphology, physical characteristics, and electrochemical properties of the manganese oxide based materials were investigated. Particle size of pristine manganese oxide samples prepared from methanol, ethanol, and propanol were compared by SEM and TEM image analysis. Smallest particle size was observed for manganese oxide prepared from propanol, with diameters range from 16 nm to 50nm. XRD results showed that the as-prepared manganese oxide based samples treated at calcination temperature of 300oC and above were composed of Mn 2 O3 as dominant phase, with Mn3 O4 as minor phase. Specific capacitance of manganese oxide prepared from methanol, ethanol, and propanol at scan rate of 10 mV/s measured using two electrode systems were 88.3, 66.0, and 104.8 F/g, respectively and that for the hybrid sample was 140.5 F/g. Results from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) also showed superior electrochemical properties of the hybrid sample over pristine manganese oxide samples. It is evident that the addition of carbon nanotubes not only improved the specific capacitance but also the overall electrochemical properties of the manganese oxide supercapacitor.
