Book Syntactic Analysis in Automatic Translation

Download or read book Syntactic Analysis in Automatic Translation written by Murray Eliot Sherry and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for the syntactic analysis of Russian sentences, applied to automatic translation, is divided into a morphological word-by-word phase and a syntactical sentence-by-sentence phase. An idealized canonical stem dictionary is presented, and its significant lexicographic properties are pointed out. This idealized dictionary then servesAS A BASIS FOR EVALUATING THE ACTUAL Harvard Automatic Dictionary. Aspects of morphological analysis of the Russian language and a series of programs written to carry it out are described. To explain the practical problems encountered in an experimental syntactic analysis program, of which a detailed description is given, a new model of natural language is introduced. (Author).

Book Syntax based Statistical Machine Translation

Download or read book Syntax based Statistical Machine Translation written by Philip Williams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book provides a comprehensive introduction to the most popular syntax-based statistical machine translation models, filling a gap in the current literature for researchers and developers in human language technologies. While phrase-based models have previously dominated the field, syntax-based approaches have proved a popular alternative, as they elegantly solve many of the shortcomings of phrase-based models. The heart of this book is a detailed introduction to decoding for syntax-based models. The book begins with an overview of synchronous-context free grammar (SCFG) and synchronous tree-substitution grammar (STSG) along with their associated statistical models. It also describes how three popular instantiations (Hiero, SAMT, and GHKM) are learned from parallel corpora. It introduces and details hypergraphs and associated general algorithms, as well as algorithms for decoding with both tree and string input. Special attention is given to efficiency, including search approximations such as beam search and cube pruning, data structures, and parsing algorithms. The book consistently highlights the strengths (and limitations) of syntax-based approaches, including their ability to generalize phrase-based translation units, their modeling of specific linguistic phenomena, and their function of structuring the search space.

Book Automatic Syntactic Analysis Based on Selectional Preferences

Download or read book Automatic Syntactic Analysis Based on Selectional Preferences written by Alexander Gelbukh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes effective methods for automatically analyzing a sentence, based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the elements that form it. To tackle ambiguities, the authors use selectional preferences (SP), which measure how well two words fit together semantically in a sentence. Today, many disciplines require automatic text analysis based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of language and as such several techniques for parsing sentences have been proposed. Which is better? In this book the authors begin with simple heuristics before moving on to more complex methods that identify nouns and verbs and then aggregate modifiers, and lastly discuss methods that can handle complex subordinate and relative clauses. During this process, several ambiguities arise. SP are commonly determined on the basis of the association between a pair of words. However, in many cases, SP depend on more words. For example, something (such as grass) may be edible, depending on who is eating it (a cow?). Moreover, things such as popcorn are usually eaten at the movies, and not in a restaurant. The authors deal with these phenomena from different points of view.

Book Machine Translation

Download or read book Machine Translation written by John Lehrberger and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the computer in translating natural languages ranges from that of a translator's aid for word processing and dictionary lookup to that of a full-fledged translator on its own. However the obstacles to translating by means of the computer are primarily linguistic. To overcome them it is necessary to resolve the ambiguities that pervade a natural language when words and sentences are viewed in isolation. The problem then is to formalize, in the computer, these aspects of natural language understanding. The authors show how, from a linguistic point of view, one may form some idea of what goes on inside a system's black box, given only the input (original text) and the raw output (translated text before post-editing). Many examples of English/French translation are used to illustrate the principles involved.

Book excerpt: All over the world, people are claiming their rights. Are these claims prompted by similar values and aspirations? And even if human rights are universal, what are the consequences of claiming them in different historical, cultural and material realities? The diversity of African countries considered in this book compels careful thought about these questions.

Book excerpt: Machine translation (MT) is the area of computer science and applied linguistics dealing with the translation of human languages such as English and German. MT on the Internet has become an important tool by providing fast, economical and useful translations. With globalisation and expanding trade, demand for translation is set to grow. Translation Engines covers theoretical and practical aspects of MT, both classic and new, including: - Character sets and formatting languages - Translation memory - Linguistic and computational foundations - Basic computational linguistic techniques - Transfer and interlingua MT - Evaluation Software accompanies the text, providing readers with hands on experience of the main algorithms.
