Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the Species of Insects Belonging to the Family of Phasmidae Having been recently led to study the singular and interesting family of Orthopterous Insects, termed Phasmidae, in order to elucidate the characters of the sixteen species described in the first part of my 'Entomology of Australia, ' I have been induced to arrange the materials collected for that purpose in the form of an Essay, the object of which is to present a complete list of all the recorded insects belonging to the family, and to embrace at the same time descriptions of a considerable number of new forms which have fallen under my observation. The result of my researches may form a not uninteresting addition to the small stock of knowledge at present possessed by entomologists with regard to this striking but neglected group. Of the extent of this knowledge, and its gradual development, some idea may be formed from the following outline of what has been written upon the subject since the days of Linnaeus, who first placed these insects in the genus Gryllus, but afterwards removed them to that of Mantis. In this latter mode of arrangement he was followed by Gmelin, and by Fabricius in his earlier publications; but in the year 1787, Stoll, in his 'Representations exactement coloriees dapres Nature des Spectres, ' &c, proposed to form the Spectres into a distinct family (genus) from Mantis. To this genus, in the commencement of his work, he gave the name of Spectrum: at the end, however, he gave a list of the species figured by him from various Dutch collections, and amounting in number to 27, with Latin specific names, to which he prefixed the generic appellation of Phasma. He divided the genus thus formed into two families, characterized as follows: "1.Les pieds anterieurs plus longs que les posterieurs; le corps tout a fait cylindrique. "2.Le corps plat; les pieds anterieurs plus courts que les posterieurs. Dans quelques especes les femellesont les etuis aussi longs que les ailes. Agriculture, both animal and plant, succeeds only to the extent that arthropod and helminth consumers, vectors and pathogens can be kept at bay. Humans and their companion animals are also plagued by invertebrate parasites. The deployment of chemical agents for these purposes inevitably elicits the selection of resistant populations of the targets of control, necessitating a regular introduction of new kinds of molecules. Experience in other areas of chemotherapy has shown that a thorough understanding of the biology of disease is an essential platform upon which to build a discovery program. Unfortunately, investment of research resources into understanding the basic physiology of invertebrates as a strategy to illuminate new molecular targets for pesticide and parasiticide discovery has been scarce, and the pace of introduction of new molecules for these indications has been slowed as a result. An exciting and so far unexploited area to explore in this regard is invertebrate neuropeptide physiology. Book excerpt: It is not surprising that Australian grassfinches are highly popular with ornithologists and aviculturists, for included among the species are one of the most beautiful of all birds – the Gouldian Finch Erythrura gouldiae – and one of the most familiar cagebirds – the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata. Despite a scarcity in published works on finches, interest in the species is growing, leading to a dramatic advancement in our knowledge of many species. For example, we have gained new information from field observations carried out on little-known species, including the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch Erythrura trichroa and the Red-eared Firetail Stagonopleura oculata. Significant advances in taxonomic research, largely as a consequence of the development and refinement of biochemical analyses, often involving DNA-DNA hybridisation, have given us a new insight into relationships among species, with some unexpected alliances being determined. Additionally, dramatic changes have taken place in avicultural practices, and in virtually all countries aviculture has taken on a new professional approach, with the most notable results being increased productivity and success with a wider variety of species. After a lapse of almost half a century since publication of Klaus Immelmann’s eminent work on finches, based on extensive field studies, the time has come for a new examination of Australian grassfinches. Brues in 1946. His Insect Dietary was an account of insect feeding habits. Since that time there has been a revolution in biology, and almost all aspects of our understanding of insect feeding have expanded to an extent and into areas that would have been unthinkable in Brues' day. Yet, our book does not replace Insect Dietary but, instead, complements it, because our aim is to bring together information on the mechanisms by which food quality and quantity are regulated. We deliberately focus attention on the feeding process; to include food-finding would have required a much larger book and would have moved the focus away from more proximate mechanisms. This book is dedicated to the late Vincent G. Dethier. As a pioneer in studying the physiological basis of animal behavior, he focused on regulation of feeding in flies and caterpillars. His work on the blowfly, together with that by his many students and co-workers, still provides the most completely described mechanism of insect feeding. The citation of his work in almost every chapter in this book illustrates the importance of his findings and ideas to our current understanding of regulation of insect feeding.
