Book Synopsis of the Pacific Herring Spawn on kelp Fishery in British Columbia

Download or read book Synopsis of the Pacific Herring Spawn on kelp Fishery in British Columbia written by J. F. Schweigert and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The harvesting of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) eggs on evergreen boughs or seaweed has been undertaken by First Nations people for many generations and is an important cultural element of many of the coastal tribes in British Columbia. In Japan, herring eggs spawned or deposited on kelp, primarily Macrocystis integrifolia, has also been a traditional delicacy consumed primarily in conjunction with New Years celebrations. The collapse of Japanese herring populations during the 1960s resulted in an interest in developing a commercial herring egg on kelp or so-called spawn-on-kelp (SOK) fishery in British Columbia in the early 1970s. The focus of this report is a description of the history and development of the commercial SOK fishery and its practices and to document the distribution, quotas, effort, and harvests throughout this period to present and to recommend an approach for inclusion of the harvest in the stock assessment process"--Introd., p. [1].

Book Review of the 1989 90 British Columbia Herring Fishery and Spawn Abundance

Download or read book Review of the 1989 90 British Columbia Herring Fishery and Spawn Abundance written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific herring migrate to inshore areas from offshore feeding grounds in the early fall and winter and then hold in sheltered bays and inlets in preparation for spawning in late winter and early spring. The food and bait fishery is conducted in November/December when the herring first move inshore and the fat content is high, and the sac-roe and spawn-on-kelp fisheries occur in March/April during the spawning season when gonad development is near or at maximum. When the herring have finished spawning, measurements of individual spawns are made to obtain estimates of abundance. This information is combined with data on catch and age composition to estimate the overall herring abundance and age class strength and to forecast the amount of herring that will return to spawn during the next year. This report presents information on the 1989/90 herring fishery and spawn abundance by district.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasii) migrate to in-shore areas from offshore feeding grounds in the early fall and winter and then hold in sheltered bays and inlets in preparation for spawning in late winter and early spring. During this time, three major commercial herring fisheries occur; a food and bait fishery, a sac-roe fishery and a spawn-on-kelp fishery. The food and bait fishery takes place in November/December when the herring first move inshore and the fat content is high, while the sac-roe and spawn-on-kelp fisheries occur in March/April during the spawning season when gonad development is near or at maximum. This report presents the results of these fisheries over the past year. Methodology is included.

Book excerpt: Analysis of the geographical distribution of herring spawning in B.C. from 1937-86. The analysis was based on 20,000 records of spawning made annually for different regions of the B.C. coast. For each of 90 geographical subdivisions of the coast, tables are given to show the annual frequency of spawns in 1 km segments of the coast, with the intensity of spawning in specific areas shown by histograms. Separate tables present a statistical summary of spawn records, including mean spawning dates. Tables summarizing roe fishery activity from 1972-86 are shown for each location and a descriptive summary including a classification of the ecological importance of herring spawning habitat is presented for each area.
