Book Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator with Intracavity Difference Frequency Mixing

Download or read book Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator with Intracavity Difference Frequency Mixing written by Michael Dearborn and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we experimentally investigate a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with an intracavity crystal that mixes the signal and idler waves, enhancing the power conversion efficiency of the idler radiation. Optical parametric oscillators provide a method for producing coherent tunable radiation from a coherent fixed-frequency pump source. The pump frequency Wp 15 converted to the signal and idler frequencies Ws and Wi, respectively, in the OPO interaction, Wp = Ws + Wi, Ws> Wi. Since the signal and idler frequencies sum to the incident pump frequency, they are always lower than the pump frequency. Extra-cavity difference-frequency mixing (DFM) of the signal and idler from an OPO was demonstrated in some early experiments and recently a number of investigators have examined mixing the signal and idler waves generated from a synchronously pumped OPO to produce long-wavelength difference-frequency radiation. Here the difference-frequency Wd is produced in the DFM interaction, Wd = Ws - Wi. The DFM process not only produces long-wavelength radiation at the difference frequency, but for each difference-frequency photon produced, another idler photon is produced. Thus, this technique also increases the idler-frequency conversion efficiency. Production of the long-wavelength difference-frequency photons may not be possible in a single-step OPO process, due to transmission bands and phase-matching limitations of available crystals and available pump wavelengths.

Book Continuous Wave 4 3 mu Intracavity Difference Frequency Generation in an Optical Parametric Oscillator

Download or read book Continuous Wave 4 3 mu Intracavity Difference Frequency Generation in an Optical Parametric Oscillator written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have achieved 150 mW of cw output at 4.3 micrometers, using difference frequency mixing in a singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO). We pumped the OPO cavity, which contains periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN), with a 14-W 1.06-micrometers Nd:YAG laser to generate a signal at 1.7 micrometers and an idler at 2.8 micrometers. Mixing of the two waves at the same crystal temperature and grating spacing yielded emission in the mid IR. This technique avoids the mid-IR absorption-high-threshold problem, which has limited the cw performance of PPLN OPOs at wavelengths beyond 4 micrometers. Provided that tunability is not required, this method is a simple alternative to multiple-crystal configurations.

Book Tunable Synchronously Pumped Intracavity Two Stage Optical Frequency Upconversion

Download or read book Tunable Synchronously Pumped Intracavity Two Stage Optical Frequency Upconversion written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical parametric oscillation (OPO) with intracavity sum-frequency generation (SFG) of the signal and pump has been studied theoretically and numerically, using the CW plane wave theory as well as a numerical code developed to simulate either synchronously pumped pulse propagation or walk-off effects in one transverse dimension. The configuration where the SFG crystal precedes the OPO crystal in the cavity gives stable high-efficiency conversion over a larger range of pump intensity, as well as lower power loading on the OPO crystal. About 85 percent conversion efficiency from 1.064 microns to 589 nm is predicted at pump intensities up to 9 MW/sq cm for a device using AgGaS2 and KTP crystals. Also, the angular distribution of parametric fluorescence from AgGaS2 has been calculated in good agreement with measurements made at the Phillips Laboratory.

At the opening of the twenty-first century we are witnessing the burgeoning of the myriad technical innovations to which that invention has led. The Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications is a practical and long-lasting reference source for scientists and engineers who work with lasers. The Handbook provides, a comprehensive guide to the current status of lasers and laser systems; it is accessible to science or engineering graduates needing no more than standard undergraduate knowledge of optics. Whilst being a self-contained reference work, the Handbook provides extensive references to contemporary work, and is a basis for studying the professional journal literature on the subject. It covers applications through detailed case studies, and is therefore well suited to readers who wish to use it to solve specific problems of their own. The first of the three volumes comprises an introduction to the basic scientific principles of lasers, laser beams and non-linear optics. The second volume describes the mechanisms and operating characteristics of specific types of laser including crystalline solid - state lasers, semiconductor diode lasers, fibre lasers, gas lasers, chemical lasers, dye lasers and many others as well as detailing the optical and electronic components which tailor the laser's performance and beam delivery systems.
