Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium ·Symmetries in Science VI: From the Rotation Group to Quantum Algebras· was held at the Cloister Mehrerau, Bregenz, Austria, during the period August 2-7, 1992. The Symposium was held in honor of Professor Lawrence C. Biedenharn on the occasion of his 70th birthday. During the academic year 1966/67 I worked as research associate with Larry at Duke University and we have ever since maintained close contact. It was thus natural for me to take the initiative and to organize this Symposium in honor of Larry as a great scientist and friend. The response which the Symposium received showed the favorable reaction by the scientific community to the opportunity provided by the Symposium to honor our colleague, teacher and friend. Equally, the scientific contributions contained in this volume illustrate the high esteem in which he is held. I wish to thank all the scientists who participated in the Symposium and who contributed to this volume. It is due to their commitment that the Symposium was successful. Finally I need to thank those who provided financial and logistical assistance to the Symposium: Dr. John H. Guyon, President of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Dr. Russell R. Dutcher, Dean, College of Science at SIUC, Dr. Maurice A. Wright, Chairman, Department of Physics, SIUC, Dr. Victoria J. Molfese, Office of Research Developement and Administration, SIUC, as well as Dr. Martin Purtscher, Landeshauptmann, Land Vorarlberg Dr. Guntram Lins, Landesrat, Land Vorarlberg.

Book Symposia on Theoretical Physics and Mathematics 9

Download or read book Symposia on Theoretical Physics and Mathematics 9 written by Alladi Ramakrishnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the Sixth Anniversary MATSCIENCE Symposium on Theoretical Physics held in January 1968 as well as the Seminar in Analysis held earlier, in December 1967. A new feature of this volume is that it includes also contributions dealing with applications of mathematics to domains other than theoretical physics. Accordingly, the volume is divided into three parts-Part I deals with theoretical physics, Part II with applications of mathematical methods, and Part III with pure mathematics. The volume begins with a contribution from Okubo who proposed a new scheme to explain the CP puzzle by invoking the intermediate vector bosons. Gordon Shaw from Irvine dealt with the crucial importance of the effects of CDD poles in partial wave dispersion relations in dynamical calculation of resonances. Applications of current algebra and quark models were considered in the papers of Divakaran, Ramachandran, and Rajasekharan. Dubin presented a rigorous formulation of the Heisenberg ferromagnet.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MATSCIENCE Institute holds two scientific meetings a year, an anniversary symposium in January to commemorate its birth in 1962 and a three-week summer school in August. The proceedings of the first three meetings were initially made available for private circulation as cyclostyled notes. Professor Rosenfeld, the editor of Nuclear Physics, expressed the view that such material, which repre sented the cooperative effort of the scientists from various countries who participated in the visiting program of our Institute, should be published in a "more permanent form" to reach a wider community of readers. We were given the opportunity to do this by Mr. Earl Coleman, President of Plenum Press, who made the spontaneous offer, during his visit to Madras just a year ago to publish these proceedings as a continuing series. It was also decided to include in each volume certain lectures delivered during the year, though not at the meeting itself, if they were relevant to the subject matter of the symposium. The handsome effort of Plenum Press to bring out the series begin ning with the very first symposium has been matched by the willing cooperation of our visiting scientists, who have made this an inter national endeavor, the wholesome consequences of which will be felt beyond the domain of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japanese culture the concept of katachi has special significance, connoting relationships and connectedness. Although katachi cannot be translated precisely, it corresponds most closely to "form," "shape," "pattern," or "Gestalt". The contemporary study of katachi is interdisciplinary and encompasses virtually all scientific and aesthetic endeavors. Katachi research seeks to bridge the gap between cultures - whether the "two cultures" of C.P. Snow or the contrasting cultures of East and West. To help achieve this aim and to foster international cooperation, the interdisciplinary symposium titled "Katachi "U" Symmetry" was convened in Tsukuba, Japan, November 21 - 25, 1994. With many participants from differing backgrounds and cultural perspectives, the symposium was the culmination of 15 years of work in the field. Like-minded researchers and philosophers came together from two movements in interdisciplinary studies of katachi and symmetry that arose in the 1980s, one in Japan, the other in Hungary. The proceedings of the symposium will stimulate and provoke the interest of scientists and mathematicians, engineers and architects, philosophers and semioticians - indeed, all those with a lively sense of curiosity and a wide-ranging intellect.

Book Quantum Theory And Symmetries Proceedings Of The International Symposium

Download or read book Quantum Theory And Symmetries Proceedings Of The International Symposium written by Vladimir K Dobrev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-05-05 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives a representative survey of recent developments in relativistic and non-relativistic quantum theory, which are related to the application of symmetries in their most general sense. The corresponding mathematical notions are centered upon groups, algebras and their generalizations, and are applied in interaction with topology, differential geometry, functional analysis and related fields. Special emphasis is on results in the following areas: quantization methods, nonlinear evolution equations, foundation of quantum physics, algebraic quantum field theory, gauge and string theories, quantum information, quantum groups, discrete symmetries.

Book Proceedings of the Highly Specialized Seminar on Symmetries in Nuclear Structure

Download or read book Proceedings of the Highly Specialized Seminar on Symmetries in Nuclear Structure written by Andrea Vitturi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highly Specialized Seminar on ?Symmetries in Nuclear Structure?, held in Erice, Italy, in March 2003, celebrated the career and the remarkable achievements of Francesco Iachello, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Since the development of the interacting boson model in the early 1970s, the ideas of Iachello have provided a variety of frameworks for understanding collective behaviour in nuclear structure, founded on the concepts of dynamical symmetries and spectrum-generating algebras. The original ideas, which were developed for the description of atomic nuclei, have now been successfully extended to cover spectroscopic behaviour in other fields, such as molecular or hadronic spectra. More recently, the suggestion by Iachello of critical point symmetries to treat nuclei in shape/phase transitional regions has opened an exciting new front for both theoreticians and experimentalists. The talks presented at the meeting covered many of the most active forefront areas of nuclear structure as well as other fields where ideas of symmetries are being explored. Topics in nuclear structure included extensive discussions on dynamical symmetries, critical point symmetries, phase transitions, statistical properties of nuclei, supersymmetry, mixed symmetry states, shears bands, pairing and clustering in nuclei, shape coexistence, exotic nuclei, dipole modes, and astrophysics, among others. In addition, important sessions focused on talks by European laboratory directors (or their representatives) outlining prospects for nuclear structure, and the application of symmetry ideas to molecular phenomena. Finally, a special lecture by Nobel laureate Alex Mueller, on s and d wave symmetry in superconductors, presented a unique insight into an allied field. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: ?
