Book excerpt: In East and West: Fusion of Horizons, Kwang-Sae Lee seeks to find and develop themes of mutual resonance in Eastern and Western thoughts, trying to interpret across boundaries of culture and age. The book discusses some general "methodological problems" pertaining to the "Meeting of East and West," Confucianism and Kantian moral philosophy, Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Eastern thought, and outstanding themes such as social practice theory, holistic individualism and pluralism. It also examines Eastern thought (Confucianism and Taoism in particular) and pragmatism (Rorty in particular). The last part introduces Korean philosophy and some important Korean philosophers. Lee believes that there is vital need for reassessing the eminent relevance of revitalized East Asian culture(s) to the contemporary world. It is with this conviction that he has written this important and timely book. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kwang-Sae Lee is Professor of Philosophy at Kent State University. He holds a PhD from Yale University. Lee was interested mainly in analytic philosophy, philosophy of science, Kant, and the history of Western philosophy. His focus has gradually but ineluctably shifted to world philosophy. Book A Contextualistic Worldview

Download or read book A Contextualistic Worldview written by Lewis Edwin Hahn and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of articles by Lewis E. Hahn addresses the philosophical school of contextualism and four contemporary American philosophers: John Dewey, Henry Nelson Wieman, Stephen C. Pepper, and Brand Blanshard. Stressing the relatively recent contextualistic worldview, which he considers one of the best world hypotheses, Hahn seeks to achieve a broad perspective within which all things may be given their due place. After providing a brief outline, Hahn explains contextualism in relation to other philosophies. In his opening chapter, as in later chapters, he expresses contextualism as a form of pragmatic naturalism. In spite of Hahn's high regard for contextualism, however, he does not think it would be good if we were limited to a single worldview. "The more different views we have and the more different sources of possible light we have, the better our chances that some of these cosmic maps will shed light on our world and our place in it."

Book Wilfrid Sellars and Twentieth Century Philosophy

Download or read book Wilfrid Sellars and Twentieth Century Philosophy written by Stefan Brandt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection features eleven original essays, divided into three thematic sections, which explore the work of Wilfrid Sellars in relation to other twentieth-century thinkers. Section I analyzes Sellars’s thought in light of some of his influential predecessors, specifically Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rudolf Carnap, John Cook Wilson, and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. The second group of essays explores from different perspectives Sellars’s place within the analytic tradition, including his relation with analytic Kantianism and analytic pragmatism. The book’s final section extracts some of the most significant lessons Sellars’s work has to offer for contemporary philosophy. These chapters address his views on inference, his views on truth and its connection to recent discussions about truth-relativism and truth-pluralism, his conception of self-knowledge, and his theory of perceptual experience.

Book Essays on Actions and Events

Download or read book Essays on Actions and Events written by Donald Davidson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Davidson has prepared a new edition of his classic 1980 collection of Essays on Actions and Events, including two additional essays. In this seminal investigation of the nature of human action, Davidson argues for an ontology which includes events along with persons and other objects. Certain events are identified and explained as actions when they are viewed as caused and rationalized by reasons; these same events, when described in physical, biological, or physiological terms, may be explained by appeal to natural laws. The mental and the physical thus constitute irreducibly discrete ways of explaining and understanding events and their causal relations. Among the topics discussed are: freedom to act; weakness of the will; the logical form of talk about actions, intentions, and causality; the logic of practical reasoning; Hume's theory of the indirect passions; and the nature and limits of decision theory. The introduction, cross-references, and appendices emphasize the relations between the essays and explain how Davidson's views have developed.
