This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous drugs administered either generally or locally have shown a cata ractogenic action. From a pathogenic point of view a di, stinction must be made between drugs which modify the transparency of the lens due to accumulation (mer curic, 'silver, gold salts, etc.) from those influencing its metabolism. Among the latter, Triparanol, antimitotic drugs, various phenothiazinic derivates, corticosteroids and certain miotics cause the most significatn dam age. It is necessary to indicate the most frequent reports which evidence a relationship between a prolonged oestroprogestinic therapy and alterations of the lens transparency. The authors also indicate pathogenic mechanisms which probably cause iatrogenic cataracts. REFERENCES Apponi G., Rinaldi E. & De Simone S. Download or read book Surgical Ethics written by Laurence B. McCullough and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-02 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first textbook on the subject, this is a practical, clinically comprehensive guide to ethical issues in surgical practice, research, and education written by some of the most prominent figures in the fields of surgery and bioethics. Discussions of informed consent, confidentiality, and advance directives--core concepts integral to every surgeon-patient relationship--open the volume. Seven chapters tackle the ethical issues in surgical practice, covering the full range of surgical patients--from emergency, acute, high-risk, and elective patients, to poor surgical risk and dying patients. The book even considers the special relationship between the surgeon and patients who are family members or friends. Chapters on surgical research and education address innovation, self-regulation in practice and research, and the prevention of unwarranted bias. Two chapters focus on the multidisciplinary nature of surgery, including the relationships between surgery and other medical specialties and the obligations of the surgeon to other members of the surgical team. The economic dimensions of surgery, especially within managed care, are addressed in chapters on the surgeons financial relationships with patients, conflicts of interest, and relationships with payers and institutions. The authors do not engage in abstract discussions of ethical theory; instead, their discussions are always directly relevant to the everyday concerns of practicing surgeons. This well-integrated volume is intended for practicing surgeons, medical educators, surgical residents, bioethicists, and medical students.

In the following years the heart, as the last organ of the human body, became the chief target of surgical therapy. Most of the cardiovascular procedures, which today Fig. 4. New medical center of the Free University in West-Berlin under construction are part of the routine all over the world, originated in the United States or in Canada: in particular the spectacular successes of open heart surgery in hypothermia or extracorporeal circulation and the replacement of cardiac valves and arteries. This was the achievement of many active fellows of the American College of Surgeons with names well-known to all of us. The gradient between the surgical standards of our two countries was regrettably large after the second world war. The longtime isolation, the destruction of our cities, the loss of man-power through two world wars and the emigration following 1933 as well as a considerable brain-drain in more recent years were the main causes.
