Download or read book The Living Barrier written by Roy J. Levin and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Living Barrier: A Primer on Transfer across Biological Membranes provides information pertinent to the movement of molecules across cell membranes. This book covers a variety of topics, including cell membrane, membrane transfer, water transfer, and movement of charged solutes. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basic ideas of the cell membrane and reviews the experimental evidence about the structure of the cell membrane. This text then reviews the classical electron microscope pictures of membranes. Other chapters consider the interactions between electrical potentials and the movements of charged substances, which make the membrane transfer of these substances much more complicated than those of neutral molecules. This book discusses as well the aspects of water structure and its influence on membrane permeability. The final chapter deals with the methods by which membranes are synthesized. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, and botanists.

Download or read book Transport of Nutrients in Plants written by A. J. Peel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport of Nutrients in Plants provides the study of nutrient movement in plants. The greater part of this book deals with the physiology and cytology of phloem. The first chapter of the text deals with studies on the definition of the cellular pathways of transport. Chapter 2 considers how the mobility of solutes can be measured and the range of chemical species which are moved in xylem and phloem. The next chapter discusses the concepts of velocity and rate. The rest of the book is devoted to the characteristics of phloem transport and the ultrastructure of sieve elements, including such topics as the control of movement, solute-loading and -unloading mechanisms, the dependence of transport upon metabolic energy, bidirectional movement and water movement in phloem. Finally an account is given of the movement of endogenous growth regulators and a brief assessment of 'hormone-directed' transport. Botanists will find the book very interesting and informative.
Download or read book Solute Movement in the Rhizosphere written by Philip Bernard Tinker and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a completely revised edition of the previously titled Solute Movement in the Soil-Root System . It describes in detail how plant nutrients and other solutes move in the soil in response to plant uptake, and it provides a basis for understanding processes in the root zone so that they can be modeled realistically in order to predict the effects of variations in natural conditions or our own practices.
Download or read book Nerve Membranes written by Patricia V. Johnston and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nerve Membranes: A Study of the Biological and Chemical Aspects of Neuron–Glia Relationships presents the various aspects of neuronal and glial structure and function. This book provides an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of neuron–glia relationships and of membranes in the nervous system. Comprised of seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the function of the biological membranes to improve, retard, and regulate the rate of cellular reactions. This text then determines the differences in the organization of the cells in the nervous system in the vertebrates and the invertebrates. Other chapters examine the role of certain intermolecular forces and of water in the organization of lipid–protein and lipid–lipid associations. This book reviews as well the theories of biological membrane structure and considers how these contribute towards understanding the methods by which membranes perform their role. This book is a valuable resource for neuroscientists, neurochemists, and researchers.
Download or read book Hydrology Ecology and Fishes of the Klamath River Basin written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-04-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Klamath River basin, which spans parts of southern Oregon and northern California, has been the focus of a prominent conflict over competing uses for water. Management actions to protect threatened and endangered fish species in the basin have left less water available for irrigation in dry years and heightened tensions among farmers and other stakeholders including commercial fishermen, Native Americans, conservationists, hunters, anglers, and hydropower producers. This National Research Council book assesses two recent studies that evaluate various aspects of flows in the Klamath basin: (1) the Instream Flow Phase II study (IFS), conducted by Utah State University, and (2) the Natural Flow of the Upper Klamath Basin study (NFS), conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). The book concludes that both studies offer important new information but do not provide enough information for detailed management of flows in the Klamath River, and it offers many suggestions for improving the studies. The report recommends that a comprehensive analysis of the many individual studies of the Klamath river basin be conducted so that a big picture perspective of the entire basin and research and management needs can emerge.

Download or read book An Introduction to Crop Physiology written by F. L. Milthorpe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-01-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1974 book was made available as a second edition in 1979. It provides an understanding of the ways in which the various physiological processes are integrated to produce the responses shown by whole plants growing in the variable environment in the field, whilst stressing the quantitative aspects of these relationships. This was the first general text to attempt such a treatment, thereby digesting much material that had been found only in research papers or detailed monographs and complementing the reductionist approach of most standard texts of plant physiology. Most of the subject matter concerns agricultural systems, but many of the concepts and approaches are applicable to more complex natural ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on integrating knowledge from many sources and on trying to assess quantitatively the importance of each component. The result is a comprehensive account making the book a valuable background for all interested in the study of plants in the field.

Download or read book Land and Stream Salinity An International Seminar and Workshop Held in November 1980 in Perth Western Australia written by L.W. Holmes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land and Stream Salinity is a compilation of papers that review the state and knowledge of processes involved in land and stream salinity, and that consider its application in different environments. This book also identifies gaps in research and development, and it designates the priorities that could significantly benefit salinity control. In addition, it identifies alternative strategies of land and water management for salinity control and determines techniques for evaluating quantitatively the alternative strategies. Furthermore, this book focuses on salinity problems in south Western Australia. After discussing the history and effects of salinity in Western Australia, the book considers the influence of plant communities on the hydrology of catchments, and it discusses evapotranspiration rates from wet and dry foliage and soil water deficit. This is followed by the transport of salts in soils and subsoils; the residence times of water and solutes within and below the root zone and saturated zone; analyses of solute distributions in deeply weathered soils; and the transport of salts in catchments and soils. This book also includes chapters on the saline seed development and control in the North American Great Plains, and the terrain, groundwater and secondary salinity in Victoria, Australia. It also presents the hydrologic model, the solute-transport models and their role in the analysis of groundwater, and the hydrosalinity models. The last chapters focus on different kinds of management for salinity control.
