This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this edited volume is to introduce the scientific community to paleoenvironmental studies of estuaries, to highlight the types of information that can be obtained from such studies, and to promote the use of paleoenvironmental studies in estuarine management. Readers will learn about the the application of different paleoecological approaches used in estuaries that develop our understanding of their response to natural and human influences. Particular attention is given to the essential steps required for undertaking a paleoecological study, in particular with regard to site selection, core extraction and chronological techniques, followed by the range of indicators that can be used. A series of case studies are discussed in the book to demonstrate how paleoecological studies can be used to address key questions, and to sustainably manage these important coastal environments in the future. This book will appeal to professional scientists interested in estuarine studies and/or paleoenvironmental research, as well as estuarine managers who are interested in the incorporation of paleoenvironmental research into their management programs.

Download or read book Major trauma care in England written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-02-05 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Care for patients who have suffered major trauma, for example following a road accident or a fall, has not significantly improved in the last 20 years despite numerous reports identifying poor practice, and services are not being delivered efficiently or effectively. Survival rates vary significantly, with a range from five unexpected survivors to eight unexpected deaths per 100 trauma patients, reflecting the variable quality of care. 450 to 600 lives could be saved each year in England if major trauma care was managed more effectively. For best outcomes care should be led by consultants experienced in major trauma; but major trauma is most likely to occur at night and at weekends, when consultants are not normally in the emergency department. Major trauma care is not coordinated and there are no formal arrangements for taking patients directly for specialist treatment or transferring them between hospitals. A significant number of patients that need a scan CT do not receive one. Not enough patients who need a critical care bed are given one. Access to rehabilitation services varies and patients are not always receiving the care that they need. The estimated annual lost economic output from deaths and serious injuries from major trauma is between £3.3 billion and £3.7 billion. Only 60 per cent of hospitals delivering major trauma care contribute to the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN). The performance of the 40 per cent of hospitals that do not submit data to TARN cannot be measured.

Book Revisiting Gender Training

Download or read book Revisiting Gender Training written by Maitrayee Mukhopadhyay and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisiting Gender Training is concerned with the thinking behind gender education and training rather than with day to day practice. It explores the explicit and implicit assumptions in gender training about the nature of knowledge (epistemology), about how knowledge is imparted (pedagogy), and about knowing (cognition). The book brings together case studies at country, regional and global level to look critically behind the practice. Jashodhara Dasgupta examines whether the primarily 'political' nature of the feminist project has been unobtrusively dismantled by the language and tools of development in India, including the use of gender training. Josephine Ahikire analyses gender training in Uganda, post-Beijing Conference, and the ways in which it has changed over time. She focuses on the point where international imperatives meet the national context, and considers the impact of gender training on the feminist intellectual and political project. Lina Abou-Habib considers gender training in the Machreq/Maghreb region in the Middle East and North Africa. She highlights the transformatory potential of such training, and the ways in which it has dealt with patriarchal mindsets and institutions. Claudy Vouhe discusses the conditions and factors that limit or strengthen the impact of gender training. This contribution is the output from an international conference on gender training in the French-speaking world in 2006. Shamim Meer explores the power of rights-based development approaches for advancing ideas and action for social change, including change to unequal gender power relations. Starting with experience in South Africa, she teases out the particular understandings of rights and agency, and reflects on a methodology for linking reflection and action through starting from the personal. Maitrayee Mukhopadhyay and Franz Wong introduce the book and establish its focus on gender training and feminist epistemology, its tone of critical reflection, and its aim of looking beneath the surface of much of the day to day 'gender' activity and considering the assumptions made about of the links that exist between knowledge, attitudes, behaviours, and practice. An extensive and up-to-date annotated bibliography of international resources (print and online) makes this a truly global sourcebook on the topic. Book jacket.

Book Parliamentary Zone Review

Download or read book Parliamentary Zone Review written by Australia. National Capital Authority and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998 the Commonwealth Government of Australia announced that the National Capital Authority would undertake a strategic review of the Parliamentary Zone and initiate the development of a master plan. In recent years, the public concerns about the Zone have included the lack of people spaces, problems relating to through-traffic and car parking, the physical location of major buildings from each other, the incomplete pedestrian network and the ageing of significant landscape items. The review found a growing interest in the place of indigenous culture in the National Capital as well as a desire for more historical interpretation and commemoration. As well as responding to these and other issues, the review was aimed at refreshing and promulgating the historical vision for tthe Parliamentary Zone that has the Griffin plan at its foundation.
