Book The United Symbolism of America

Download or read book The United Symbolism of America written by Robert Hieronimus and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historian author of Founding Fathers, Secret Societies offers a revealing analysis of America’s many symbols, icons, and monuments. America is young, but its symbols are old. Many of them—from the stars and stripes in the American flag to the strange images on our currency—have become so familiar that most of us don't give them a second thought. In United Symbolism of America, Robert R. Hieronimus will help you see the symbolic messages encoded for us by our Founding Fathers in the symbols they chose. Unlike other writers on this topic, Hieronimus discusses the historical background and artistic influences behind the design of our symbols and landmarks. United Symbolism of America includes revealing information about the symbolism embedded in The Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and many of the monuments found in Washington, D.C. Putting to rest the erroneous notion that our country’s symbolism is rooted in Satanism, Hieronimus demonstrates that the symbols that have become our national icons represent hope, growth, and opportunity.

It is the way life should be. More specifically, Maine is 3,500 miles of enchanting coastline, the 5,267-foot elevation of Mount Katahdin, and of course her hardy, friendly folks. That it was a woman, Cornelia Thurza “Fly Rod” Crosby, who became the first licensed, registered Maine Guide in 1897? Or that the earmuff was patented in the 1870s by young Chester Greenwood, who went on to be named one of America’s top fifteen outstanding inventors? For Mainers and newcomers alike, Maine Icons will be a treasured keepsake of this charming state.

Book The Unveiling of the National Icons

Download or read book The Unveiling of the National Icons written by Albert Boime and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-13 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Unveiling of the National Icons, Albert Boime analyses the creation and reception of several American national monuments as a means of understanding the politics of memory and national icons. In engaging, 'behind the scenes' accounts of several highly visible symbols, such as the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore, among others, he demonstrates how these icons have been manipulated for patriotic purposes. Boime also shows how these monuments express individual and collective needs and how they are subject to contested readings, despite their origins in the creative imaginations of conservatives and privileged members of America. Examining these symbols as a group for the first time, this book is also the first serious investigation of visual artifacts that are too often taken for granted.

Book Henry George and the Crisis of Inequality

Download or read book Henry George and the Crisis of Inequality written by Edward O'Donnell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's remarkable explosion of industrial output and national wealth at the end of the nineteenth century was matched by a troubling rise in poverty and worker unrest. As politicians and intellectuals fought over the causes of this crisis, Henry George (1839–1897) published a radical critique of laissez-faire capitalism and its threat to the nation's republican traditions. Progress and Poverty (1879), which became a surprise best-seller, offered a provocative solution for preserving these traditions while preventing the amassing of wealth in the hands of the few: a single tax on land values. George's writings and years of social activism almost won him the mayor's seat in New York City in 1886. Though he lost the election, his ideas proved instrumental to shaping a popular progressivism that remains essential to tackling inequality today. Edward T. O'Donnell's exploration of George's life and times merges labor, ethnic, intellectual, and political history to illuminate the early militant labor movement in New York during the Gilded Age. He locates in George's rise to prominence the beginning of a larger effort by American workers to regain control of the workplace and obtain economic security and opportunity. The Gilded Age was the first but by no means the last era in which Americans confronted the mixed outcomes of modern capitalism. George's accessible, forward-thinking ideas on democracy, equality, and freedom have tremendous value for contemporary debates over the future of unions, corporate power, Wall Street recklessness, government regulation, and political polarization.
