Book excerpt: Teachers of physical education have the responsibility to develop and teach programs that physically educate elementary school children (Hickson & Fishburne, 2005). Therefore, what teachers do to achieve this aim is a critical consideration. Issues such as planning, lesson delivery (Bradford & Hickson, 2014; Mawer, 1995; Rink, 2006; Siedentop, 1991), and the evaluation of learning (Metzler, 2005; Pangrazi & Beighle, 2010) are constant themes of consideration and thought. However, other areas of preparedness such as presentation (i.e., clothing) have not been investigated to the same degree (Hickson & Bradford, 2012). Therefore, the purpose of this explanatory mixed-methods study was to determine whether an elementary school teacher's choice of clothing in physical education affects children's perceptions toward that teacher and the physical education lesson. Elementary school-aged children from six northern Alberta schools participated in the study. Quantitative data was collected through the use of a Mannequin Clothing Assessment Questionnaire (MCAQ); whilst focus group interviews were employed to collect qualitative data. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. In regards to qualitative data, key words and themes emerging from the focus group interviews were analyzed and compared to identify common themes related to the children's perceptions. Both quantitative and qualitative data illustrated that clothing is perceived as important when teachers are teaching physical education lessons. This information may prove to be beneficial to literature on effective teaching, teacher as a role model, symbolism of teacher clothing and those involved in educational fields.

This may lead to conflicts between certain minority practices and the dominant majority, particularly around the manifestation of belief in the public domain which may be seen both by the religious and secular majorities as a threat to their cultural heritage or against the secular values of the host country. The law has to mitigate those tensions in order to protect the public from harm and preserve order but in doing so, it may where necessary have to limit citizens’ ability to freely manifest their religion. It is those limitations that have been disputed in the courts on grounds of freedom of religion and belief. Religious symbols are often at the heart of legal battles, with courts called upon to consider the lawfulness of banning or restricting certain symbols or practices. This book analyses the relationship between the state, individuals and religious symbols, considering the three main forms of religious expression, symbols that believers wear on their body, symbols in the public space such as religious edifices and rituals that believers perform as a manifestation of their faith. The book looks comparatively at legal responses in England, the U.S.A and France comparing different approaches to the issues of symbols in the public sphere and their interaction with the law. The book considers religious manifestation as a social phenomenon taking a multidisciplinary approach to the question mixing elements of the anthropology, history and sociology of religion in order to provide some context and examine how this could help inform the law.

Often the perpetrators are ‘home grown’, which places the relationship between Muslims and the countries in which they live under intense political and media scrutiny, and raises questions about the success of the integration of Muslims of migrant origin. At the same time, populist politicians try to shift the blame from the few perpetrators to the supposed characteristics of all Muslims as a ‘group’ by depicting Islam as a threat that seeks to undermine liberal democratic values and institutions. The research in this volume attempts to redress the balance by focusing on the views and life experiences of the many ‘ordinary’ Muslims in their European societies of settlement, and the role that cultural and religious factors play in shaping their social relationships with majority populations and public institutions. The book is specifically interested in the relationship between cultural/religious distance and social factors that shape the life chances of Muslims relative to the majority. The study is cross-national, comparative across the six main receiving countries with distinct approaches to the accommodation of Muslims: France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. The research is based on the findings of a survey of four groups of Muslims from distinct countries of origin: Turkey, Morocco, the former Yugoslavia, and Pakistan, as well as majority populations, in each of the receiving countries.
