How works by masters like Rembrandt, Rodin, Picasso, van Gogh, Monet, Hokusai, and O'Keeffe wound up where they did is a colorful tale of American art collecting. The fifty museums in "A Love for the Beautiful" offer uniquely personal art-viewing experiences for both business and pleasure travelers."--Provided by publisher.

Download or read book Inventing Acadia written by Katie A. Pfohl and published by Other Distribution. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging study of Louisiana landscape painting that places art from the region into a broader national and global context With its dense forests and swamps, Louisiana captured the imagination of writers and painters who viewed its landscape as a fascinating, untamed wilderness. Starting in the 1820s when French émigrés brought the Barbizon school to New Orleans, the state attracted artists from Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the greater United States who shared ideas and experimented with approaches to the enigmatic scenery. Although Louisiana was in many ways an artists' paradise, the land also bore the scars of colonialism and the forced migrations of slavery. Inventing Acadia explores this complex history, following the rise of Louisiana landscape art and situating it amid the cultural shifts of the 19th century. The authors engage not only with artworks but also with the issues that informed them--representations of race and industry, international trade, and climate change. These issues are then carried into the present with a look at the work of contemporary artist Regina Agu. Inventing Acadia establishes Louisiana's role in creating a new vision for American art and highlights the continued relevance of landscape and representation. Download or read book Maya Lin written by Maya Lin and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive monograph on the acclaimed American artist and architect, known for her environmental works and memorials that distill a tranquil yet texturally rich minimalism. Maya Lin is one of the most important public artists of this century. As an architecture student at Yale, Lin designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as a class project, entering it in the largest design competition in American history. Her winning proposal, a V-shaped wall of black stone etched with the names of 58,000 dead soldiers, has since become the most visited memorial in the nation’s capital. This visually rich volume presents 50 projects from the last three decades that demonstrate the scope of Lin’s creative process, featuring her own sketches and drawings and linked by her ideal of making a place for individuals within the landscape. With her environmental works Storm King Wavefield, Eleven-Minute Line (Sweden), and Pin River–Yangtze (Beijing), Lin maintains a balance between art and architecture, drawing inspiration from culturally diverse sources. From the moment she entered the national spotlight with her design for the Vietnam Memorial, Lin has been proposing ways of thinking and imagining that resist categories, genres, and borders.

Download or read book Southern Accent written by Miranda Isabel Lash and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring the work of sixty artists and including 300 illustrations, the catalog Southern Accent accompanies a major contemporary art exhibition that questions and explores the complex and contested space of the American South. This unprecedented exhibition investigates the many realities, fantasies, and myths of the South that have long captured the public's imagination, while presenting a wide range of perspectives that create a composite portrait of southern identity through contemporary art. It looks at the South as an open-ended question and concept in itself by encompassing a broad spectrum of media and approaches, demonstrating that southernness is more of a shared sensibility than any one definable culture or style. While the exhibition includes artwork from the 1950s to the present, it primarily focuses on the past thirty-five years. With numerous contributions by artists, scholars, musicians, and poets, a music-listening library, and a timeline of scholarship on southern art, this catalog redefines the way we look at the South in contemporary art. Southern Accent will be on display at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University from September 1, 2016 to January 8, 2017 and at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, from April 29, 2017, to August 20, 2017. Download or read book Oliver Ranch written by Joan Simon and published by Gregory R. Miller. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing project that Steve and Nancy Oliver have developed over the last 30 years has no obvious parallel in the history of art collecting. Beginning in 1985, their ranch in Northern California has been the site for dozens of commissions, site-specific and permanent outdoor works, by some of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. The likes of Bruce Nauman, Richard Serra, Ann Hamilton, Martin Puryear, Andy Goldsworthy and many others have constructed works, with the active support of the Olivers. Oliver Ranch is the first published look at one of the greatest collections of outdoor sculpture in the world (open to the public only during the fall and spring for organized groups). Including a major essay plus individual texts on each commission by Joan Simon, and filled with interviews, artist statements, plans, archival photographs and stunning new photography, this book charts the history of the project through each commission, through the eyes of the artists and the Olivers.
