Book excerpt: Many years have passed since the dark tide of violent and malevolent creatures spilled into the realm from the ancient portal that should never have been opened. Adamar, an elderly but legendary elven swordsman sent to track the incursion, had found a small frightened girl, Lauriel Valendril, hiding in the shattered remnants of her destroyed elven village. After taking her in as his own, he finds that her traumatic experience creates an unrivaled ambition to learn to protect herself and others, and he begins to train her in the ancient and secretive elven fighting style of the Andulari. Through fierce determination and unrelenting practice, Lauriel unequivocally becomes one of his best students and masters the graceful but deadly technique at a very young age. Hearing murmurs of the ancient evil re-emerging, and sensing that his time to stand and fight has passed, Adamar gives Lauriel a gift that has been hidden from the realm for many ages—Isilmwé, an ancient blade of power, and with it, the responsibility to unlock the true power of the blade and defend the realm. The defenses of the realm quickly fall one by one and together with a wizard, warlock, healer, and fighter, Lauriel pushes forward on a quest to close the portal before all is lost. What began as a pursuit to avenge her family, ultimately turns into a battle for the very survival of the realm—a battle that Lauriel has trained her entire life to fight. Book George Sword s Warrior Narratives

Download or read book George Sword s Warrior Narratives written by Delphine Red Shirt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation The general focus in Lakota oral literary research has been on content rather than process within oral traditions. In this groundbreaking study of the characteristics of Lakota oral style, Delphine Red Shirt shows how its composition and structure are reflected in the work of George Sword, who composed 245 pages of text in the Lakota language using the English alphabet. What emerges in Sword’s Lakota narratives are the formulaic patterns inherent in the Lakota language that are used to tell the narratives, as well as recurring themes and story patterns. Red Shirt’s primary conclusion is that this cadence originates from a distinctly Lakota oral tradition. Red Shirt analyzes historical documents and original texts in Lakota to answer the question: How is Lakota literature defined? Her pioneering work uncovers the epistemological basis of this literature, which can provide material for literary studies, anthropological and traditional linguistics, and translation studies. Her analysis of Sword’s texts discloses tools that can be used to determine whether the origin of any given narrative in Lakota tradition is oral, thereby opening avenues for further research.

Book Sword of Kings

  • Author : Bernard Cornwell
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2019-11-26
  • ISBN : 0062563238
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book Sword of Kings written by Bernard Cornwell and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England—"superior entertainment that is both engaging and enlightening” (Washington Post), and the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit Netflix series. It is a time of political turmoil once more as the fading King Edward begins to lose control over his successors and their supporters. There are two potential heirs—possibly more—and doubt over whether the once separate states of Wessex and Mercia will hold together . Despite attempts at pulling him into the political fray, Uhtred of Bebbanburg cares solely about his beloved Northumbria and its continuing independence from southern control. But an oath is a strong, almost sacred commitment and such a promise had been exchanged between Uhtred and Aethelstan, his onetime companion in arms and now a potential king. Uhtred was tempted to ignore the demands of the oath and stay in his northern fastness, leaving the quarrelling Anglo-Saxons to sort out their own issues. But an attack on him by a leading supporter of one of the candidates and an unexpected appeal for help from another, drives Uhtred with a small band of warriors south, into the battle for kingship—and England’s fate.
